Hotel, rooms, restaurant, staff... All top top top! And what an impressive winelist 👍 Ideal location to explore the Piemonte region and discover it’s exceptional terroir. Extra note... I had the privilige to have a sneak peak in the hotel’s ‘cantina’ with appx 1000 Barolo references

We spent three nights at Tota Virginia last week with some close friends. So this is a two-in-one review of both the hotel and the restaurant where we had dinner the first night,
I’ve stopped writing reviews for any place that I find anything but top - I’d rather tell the establishment rather than the world if it was not up to a top standard. The hotel has stunning views of Barolo vineyards. The rooms are cosy and comfortable. Great breakfast spread. Above all, the owner, Riccardo, a truly elegant and soft spoken local, went out of his way to be hospitable. Not only did he reserve two top restaurants in Serralunga for our other two dinners, but he even had the courtesy to drive us there and back! How good is that!
Dinner was superb. We had the 40-egg tajarin (pasta) with white truffle and the veal tartar with white truffle. Exquisite, and the best we had in our stay in Langhe. The sommelier suggested a 2006 Barbaresco Gallina from La Spinetta. It was so good, we had three bottles, and even visited the winery the next day. The 10-cheese platter was superb and varied. All in all, I can only praise and thank Riccardo and his staff for making our stay in Piedmont memorable.

Let us start off by thanking again the owner of Antico Podere Tota Virginia and his amazing staff. Giuseppe Riccardo is the owner and ever present attendant to every need. The staff meticulously cares for every detail. In the dining room, and for anything you need or desire there are ( in alphabetical order ) Franco, Irina and Jacopo. The amazing chefs prepare wonderful Piemontese meals from their beautiful menu ( and will be pleased to prepare something not on the menu, especially if you are there for a while as we were.... we stayed 12 nights and loved every minute !! ). In the 5 star kitchen are: Claudio, Giorgio, Davide and Cipriano... Wow ! what job they do. The wine list is 57 pages .... heavenly.....

My wife & I from New Jersey have been to Italy 3 years ago, but I have been waiting to visit Piemonte where all of my most favorite wines are produced. We are independent travelers and always seem to find the perfect place to stay & of course a car is a must. Antico Podere Tota Virginia is a recently restored farmhouse property with 13 rooms and every time you turn your head on the property the view is AMAZING ( we found it totally true that the Serralunga d' Alba countryside is as good as you will find among all the towns & vineyards of the area )..It is an eco-friendly hotel with a great pool, and upgraded by Giuseppe Riccardo with energy efficient amenities throughout, and with exterior automatic lighting assisting on & off at night, only lighting as you walk by & only when you need it. Very nice to have after much wine, some grappa & perhaps a fine cigar....

We found Serralunga d' Alba to be the perfect base from which to enjoy Piemonte. We arrived Sept. 3 for 12 nights and the weather was perfect. We had about 1 hour of rain in the car one day returning from Torino, that was it. We awoke every morning in room 205 and looked over the vineyard to see Castiglione Falletto close in the distance and said: " Oh my God, how beautiful is this !! For many years my favorite wines are from Piemonte : Barbaresco / Nebbiolo / Barolo / Dolcetto / Barbera / Gattinara / Roero / Ghemme and I was like a kid in a candy store...

Giuseppe Riccardo hosted 3 wedding parties during our stay & they were lovely !! Got to see 3 Italian wedding parties.... very nice indeed ... Up the road a short mile or 2 in the village of Serralunga d' Alba we toured ( only open Sat & Sun ) a castle whose construction began in 1340 & was completed in 1357. The castle ( Serralunga Castle ) is in excellent condition given that it had never been attacked. This town is wonderful & one must eat with Alessio & his wife at Storico Centro.. This guy is really something. We had dinner there one evening and the men there were all local wine producers sharing their own wine & enjoying the wonderful food prepared at this small trattoria. Veal dishes are varied & very poplar in Piemonte...wail until you start enjoying carne crudo... it is served nearly everywhere and it is outstanding !!

From our ideal base we visited every City, town & village time allowed for. The visits to: Turino / Barolo / Alba is a great small city only 30 minutes from Tota Virginia & you will want to return there over & over / Castiglione Falletto is very close & you must have dinner at Ristorante Le Torri or at Locanda del Centro / Diano d' Alba is totally charming / La Morra / what a lunch we had in Barbaresco !! / Sinio / also a 2 hour drive down to the Italian Riveria in the Ligure was wonderful for the day at the beach / Torino we went to twice / must visit the wonderful town of Neive with its fascinating history & beauty / we fell in love with the small city of Cherasco ( The City of Peace ) not far from La Morra / in the small city of Bra we found a local trattoria with a great buffet lunch the locals flock to / back to Diano d' Alba to see Massimo who manages the area wine collective / Roddino / Monforte d' Alba...The point is that Antico Podere Tota Virginia is perfectly located for everything.. Milano was too far to bother driving to for the day, but it was not needed....not at all....

Again, Grazie mille to Giuseppe Riccardo & his staff for a marvelous vacation in Piemonte. This one will be very tough to beat..

the past few weeks we traveled the south of france and the north of italy. we stayed in all kinds of very expensive (dijon) and very inexpensive (san remo) hotels. a few days ago we ariived in this wonderful hotel in the middle of the barolo wine region and felt as if we were in paradise. the hotel is situated on a mountain top overseeing the alba wine area, has a beautiful pool, and wonderful rooms. we ate in the restaurant two nights in a row. it was excellent. service was impeccable, food was creative, fresh, high quality: the best we had in many months (and we stay in hotels quite often, for business and for non-business reasons). of all the hotels we have stayed in the past few months (and possibly years), this hotel is among the very very best. the breakfast is better than what we had in luxurious resorts in las vegas, new york, london, paris. what makes this hotel so great? the fact that the owners love their job and try to make you feel at comfortable. we will certainly come back, taste more of their wines, have dinner there whenever we can, and reserve extra time to enjoy the wonderfully fresh breakfast.

This place was a treat! Ricardo, The Manager/owner is one of those people that truly belongs in the hotel industry. He did everything in his power to ensure that his guests are happy. The rooms were spotless and the pool was fantastic. We ate twice at the restaurant and it too was great.

Wonderful hotel with very good restaurant and excellent service. Family hotel with good treatment to the guests: they will meet you at night and will make you early breakfast if needed. The wine cellar and prices for the wines are fantastic. Tota Virginia will be my nest place of staying in Piedmont!

My wife and I stayed at Tota Virginia for six nights in late July and early August 2011.
We arrived on a hot afternoon after a long drive from France. Signor Baltrocco warmly greeted us in reception and after the formalities of booking-in he escorted us to our room.
We had booked a superior room and it lived up to expectations. The bedroom was large with a huge comfortable bed and adequate storage for our belongings. All the expected facilities were provided e.g. fridge (hidden in a matching cupboard), TV with Sky and a safe. The bathroom was also large and everything sparkled, the floor tiles, the shower cubicle even the plug in the sink! Separate towels were provided for the shower, the hand basin, the bidet and for stepping out from the shower. There was a generous supply of soaps and lotions, even toothbrushes and toothpaste in the bathroom. A nice touch was the provision of mule type slippers in the bedroom, .
The room had a very large balcony overlooking the garden and pool but the stunning aspect was the view over the vinyards and valley to the little village of Castiglione Falletto on the hill opposite and beyond to Barolo. The distant Alps can be glimpsed on a clear day. In fact just about any part of Tota Virginia provides wide vistas of the Langhe countryside and its many small towns and villages.
Dining that first evening was a wonderful experience. My wife and I are not suited to many courses in a meal and we were delighted to find out that we could pick and choose from the menu. The food was excellent and preceded by a delightful selection of small appetizers. But, what to drink with the meal? The wine list extends to around fifty pages with many wines to the page. However, prices range from less than 20 euros to many hundreds of euros per bottle so there is plenty of choice of price as well as of wine. We settled on a 25 euros local red and it was excellent. Riccardo Baltrocco was everywhere dealing with his guests and he took great delight in explaining the contents of his cheese board; the name of the cheese; whether cow, goat or sheep provided the milk; the texture and the taste. Needless to say the cheeses were wonderful and I finished every meal with a visit to the cheeseboard.
After our long trip and a tasty meal we retired to our room and slept well.
Breakfast at Tota Virginia was something to look forward to and there was something to everyone's taste. Meats and sausage; some of the wonderful cheeses; cereals, breads, croissants, pains au chocolat; an amazing array of prepared fruits and a fruit bowl; eggs, boiled or as an omlette all rounded off by coffee prepared by either Riccardo or his delightful wife.
Nothing was too much trouble; my wife has difficulty using heavy cutlery and asked if a lighter knife was available. A knife was provided and appeared at every following meal no matter who was serving at table on that occasion.
This holiday was our first in Italy that wasn't based on the coast and it was a bit of an experiment. However, we needn't have worried as we had the best holiday we have ever had. We spent time by the pool - ample chairs and sun beds provided - or travelling out to visit the many attractive small towns and villages or wine producers. We dined in and out - the Albergo in Serralunga is well worth a visit - but most of all we just relaxed and soaked up the atmosphere of this beautiful region with its friendly people.
The hotel is small enough to allow the personal touch that defines a top notch establishment. Riccardo Baltrocco is literally everywhere all of the time; available, friendly, informative, arranging visits to wine producers, nothing is too much trouble.
If you're after a quiet, relaxing holiday at a first class hotel where personal service is paramount and where you are surrounded by beautiful countryside and places to visit then Antico Podere Tota Virginia is the hotel for you.

We stayed at Tota Virginia for 18 days in May 2011. Ten of those days were with a group of 20 friends that were traveling with me on an extensive food and wine trip to the most glorious and under discovered wine area in Italy. Riccardo, the owner/manager is always ready to do whatever it takes to make it the best experience you can imagine. I had 3 winemaker dinners and lunches in the restaurant and was very pleased with the food and service,as was the group of experienced and critical visitors with me. Riccardo and his staff go out of their way to please you. Its a jewel in the region that will be discovered as more people hear about this area of pleasure and excellence.
