Detailed Reviews
I had a delightful stay at Silverstream Retreat and thoroughly enjoyed my time there.
The room was very comfortable with modern decor. The bed was lovely and there was a generous supply of coffee and a range of different kinds of tea. This was much more than an average hotel stay. The room is delightful and it is set in a beautiful natural setting. The breakfasts delivered to the room were delicious. I enjoyed a generous serving pancakes with bacon topped with maple, cream and jam, and the following day I had a breakfast with the works - eggs, sausage, mushrooms tomato and Turkish flat bread toast. Everything about this stay was comfortable, generous and well appointed. I cannot recommend this property highly enough.

While this place is regularly used as a conference centre or for group bookings, we managed to secure one of their motel rooms for two nights. It was well placed between Upper Hutt and Wellington central and close getting on/off to the expressway.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was clean and comfy and the wheelchair access was excellent from height of bed, to ease of opening entry door to wet area shower. There was no ramp to get out onto the verandah, but this was not of a concern to us as we did not spend a huge amount of time in the room.
There was a large group of students/children at the Retreat at the same time, but they did not disturb us in any way, and the venue was peaceful and quiet overall.
Definitely recommend, especially if you need a wheelchair accessible accommodation option.

What a lovely place to stay
Rooms are huge & well decorated.
Kitchen is great as is the bathroom
Loads of parking
Quite a big area, i think it was an old Army hospital in the war.
Only thing is, the wifi is crap. Couldn't do any reports that night

Right let's get the nice stuff over with since there is very little. It's clean (well unless BLOOD upsets you on your bed cover) we stayed in the Executive suite 1. Small but nothing to complain about. Customer service is low or they hire idiots over the weekend that don't like to man the front reception. But here's the killer... At 9pm we 1st heard the, well band/new aged church group. ABOVE US ON THE 2ND FLOOR OVER OUR BED. We just turned the tv up but by 1030pm when we wanted to SLEEP it was getting past a joke! Called reception no answer called the "if reception doesn't answer number" and they hung up on us 3 times. Asked the person to please ask the group to finish up. 11pm STILL singing banging feet on floor and playing drums!!!! Yep not happy!!!!!! Called the front again hung up on another 3 times when he finally answered we were told gods word is beautiful we should handle it. It which we informed him either he sorts it or we call the police - funny that got god to shut up!
I would never stay here again and plan to blog and make sure all my travel mates here about this place.

This place is not at all like how it is portrayed on it's website. The reception looks lovely but it's only a front. Go round the corner to where most of the rooms are and it's like a scene from a horror film. Buildings are run down and forgotten like it's an old abandoned farm and not in a good way. I stayed on my own as I was in the area for business and I felt so uncomfortable/unsafe walking the 10 minutes from my room to a taxi at reception. They offered a breakfast that could be ordered over the phone but there was no phone in the room? The room itself was clean and tidy but the creaking floorboards of someone who came and stood outside my door was freaky and I did the sleep any of the 3 nights I stayed. Would not recommended ever!

Response from MarkHarrisson, General Manager at Silverstream Retreat
Responded 25 Apr 2016
Thank you for your comments, it is rather unfortunate that you have had a less than ideal experience at our facility and have decided to let us know how displeased you are through trip advisor after you checked out. We are in the process of a $20 million dollar upgrade of the old Silverstream Hospital, out of 25 buildings of various sizes on site, 3 are in a run down state awaiting demolition, the rest have been fully or partially renovated. We have taken great pride in the renovation programme and have made no secret of this on our website, Facebook page and motel compendiums. If you had let us know that the the 250m walk to your motel accommodation would take you 10 minutes we would have happily provided you with transport to and from reception. If you had let us know after the first night that you were uncomfortable in your recently renovated Stonewall Studio we would have happily moved you to a different unit. If you had read the compendium or spoke to the staff at reception you would have been informed that we don't have phones in the rooms you had booked but there is a telephone in the accommodation lobby as you enter the building. Unfortunately for us you decided not to communicate with us whilst you were here but through TripAdvisor after you left.

My wife and I held our wedding reception here.
The customer service was 2nd to none, the eye to detail was perfect and the welcoming by all staff was superb.
Our meals where devine, starters, mains and desserts where faultless.
All our guests had a wonderful time, where we'll looked after and not one complaint filtered back to us.
We had family staying from overseas and out of town.
The rooms where clean tidy and well presented
Breakfast was delivers to our door in the morning as well as all our guests.
Was a truly wonderful place to say, couldn't fault at all.
Thank you for making our occasion 1 to remember.

The place was really very clean and tidy, the staff nice and cheerful and overall it is a nice venue but the room We stayed in had the worst sound insulation I have ever encountered in a hotel.
We were sandwiched between two other rooms, from one side We could here the TV quite clearly, though thankfully turned off at a reasonable hour, and the other had a giggling couple who spent all night getting it on and we could hear far more than we liked to.
Also very conscious that the noise we were making would likely also be disturbing our neighbours to the right if we turned up the volume on the TV to drown out the sound of he couple on the left.
Hardly slept at all. Due to e noise factor, probably one of my worst stays in a hotel ever.

I stayed here a few weeks ago.whilst i was very impressed with how clean it was i have to
say most of the staff were rude and unhelpful.the worst were the staff in reception who didnt
seem to have a clue about anything.shame it wasnt up to the standard of the cleaners as
it has the potential to be great.

We stayed here last week, and coming from Aust, the weather was bitterly cold. Check in was quick and it was wonderful to get to our loft apartment to find the heating had been on for some time and the place was warm.
There is a full size oven and ceramic cooktop, microwave, toaster etc and a reasonable range of kitchen utensils. The apartment was clean. Local phone calls are free.
The bathroom is good and the beds comfortable. The view across the river is lovely and the double glazing blocks most of the traffic noise on the far side of the river.
Now for the things we didn't like, and really, if the owners stayed in their own accommodation, they notice these shortcomings too.
WIFI wasn't available at the time in the apartment and having to go to reception to be able to get coverage was a little annoying as it was so wet, cold and muddy underfoot.
There is nowhere to put your groceries that don't need to go in the fridge. A shelf above the bench area would solve this problem.
There is no coffee table in the lounge, so we had to use one of the dining chairs for our coffee cups.
The tv had a pay tv programme guide, but apart from pay-per-view movies, it was all free-to-air tv, but no guide.
The loft upstairs has 2 single beds, no bedside tables and no wardrobes. If a family of 4 stayed here, those sleeping upstairs would either have to leave their clothes in their suitcase, or put them on the floor.
The main bed downstairs had an electric blanket, but upstairs beds did not, and it was needed while we were there.
The bathroom had the usual note about being eco-friendly and placing used towels on the rail if the guests wanted to reuse them. One small towel rail, and no hooks makes it hard to do that. There was a tiny rail under the wash basin - the bath mat and one face washer took up that room. So again, for a family of 4, they would have had nowhere to put all 4 towels if they did want to reuse them..
As mentioned by a previous reviewer, the walls are paper thin between the units. When someone was washing dishes next door, we felt we could reach through and do the drying up for them!
Parking is not good. You cannot get your car very close unless you're in one of the end units and although there was a grassy area we saw others had parked on, as it had been very wet, it was extremely 'squishy' underfoot, with the potential to either get stuck or to damage the grassed area.
We realise that it is a large site undergoing refurbishment, and it seems to be used for a number of purposes - we saw a wedding, a seminar, church service etc but the accommodation could be a real income earner if these shortfalls were addressed, and more advertising of this side of the business was done - we stumbled across the website by accident. Friends who live nearby had no idea it was anything other than a place for school/church camps and functions.
The location suited us but at $180/night, it is not, at present, value for money.
