Detailed Reviews
Beautiful views of Doubtless Bay, sunrises and sunsets from a motel located in the most perfect position; high above the bay with spectacular views from either side of the motel room. Fabulous hosts; Chester and Debs did everything they could to make us feel welcome and offered some great recommendations of places to visit and eat. Our stay originally should have been one night but we extended to two as we just didn’t want to leave! The motel is easy walking distance from the bars, restaurants and shops in beautiful Mangonui. The local beaches are stunning and great for body boarding and a bit of fishing. The motel was clean and comfortable with everything we needed including really comfy beds. A lovely place to stay if heading to Cape Reinga and 90 mile beach. Definitely one of our favourite visits on our NZ road trip!

What a fantastic choice to base ourselves here for 10 days while we explored Northland.
Mangonui is a special place. It has a village feel with everything you need.
Great eating spots and it took us until the last night to finally make it to The Thai restaurant (which was delicious) as we kept getting drawn to the Hotel (the best fish and chips and burgers). Little Kitchen was great for breakfast and The Waterfront Cafe does brilliant pizzas and muffins. And the 4 Square has everything you could want. All of this is just a short walk down the hill. We used the local track.
Hosts Deb and Chester are wonderful. They work incredibly hard, but never seem hurried or rushed and share their knowledge of the area generously. We went to several of their suggestions and were very pleased we did. The Whaling Museum over at Hihi is well worth the visit. As is the Gumstore Bar and Grill in Totara North if you like a bit of history.
The room had stunning views and was immaculately clean. We stayed in unit 6 and had 180 degree views. We looked down on the wharf, so there was always something going on.
If you can drag yourself away from the windows, the internet and Sky are there as well. The room has everything you need, including a kitchen (which we didn't need with so many great eating places available)
It was nice to have a seperate bedroom, with a comfy bed and those spectacular views.
We will be back as there is still plenty left to do, and it is the perfect place to stay.

We arrived here as a last minute booking on our motorbike tour of New Zealand. The host, Chester, made us extremely welcome.
Our room was huge with the bedroom separate from a very comfortable lounge and kitchen area. The room was at the end of the property and had sweeping views to three sides over the lovely bay and a small terrace with seating to further enjoy the views.
The decor was tasteful and clean and the kitchen had everything we needed, including a fridge.
Mangonui itself had everything we needed and we followed Chester's advice and took the short cut down to the village centre for really good food in the pub chip shop. It was such a pretty place and we would love to have stayed longer at the motel. Thoroughly recommend!

We arrived in Mangonui quite late and most places were booked up, we then found this one and I’m so glad we did. Chester and his wife are perfect hosts and so helpful and friendly, we had a 1 bed apartment at the end of the row closest to the water and had 180 deg views of the estuary. The place was spotless clean and well equipped with pots, pans and cutlery should you decide to make your own meals. Chester told us of the short cut to town as Mangonui is quite hilly. The rooms have verandahs too so you can sit outside. If I ever go to Mangonui again I’ll certainly stay here.

A gorgeous location and superb motel. Set above the Mangonui township this motel is perfect for ease of access to shops and restaurants. The motel is very well appointed with all you need for a few days away. Every unit has stunning views and is a delight to wake up and look out on the harbour.
Booking and checkout were easy and no fuss. Debbie and Gerard the owners have information on all the top spots, food, sightseeing and fishing!!! Highly recommend staying here!

We booked this stop for 1 night on our recent visit to the Northland area of New Zealand and we were sorry we could only spend the 1 night as it was a beautiful location overlooking the bay. Our room was number 6 and was upstairs affording wonderful 360 views. We would love to have stayed for several days to enjoy chilling out here. We will need to return!
The rooms have been refurbished tastefully and are spacious and very clean. The shower was great and the bed very comfortable. The kitchenette had plenty of options for self catering simple meals.
The owners (Deb and Chester) were extremely friendly and welcoming, offering plenty of tips for our trip to Cape Reinga ( which we followed) and we enjoyed a chat later in the evening when we saw them at dinner. There are numerous choices for dinner close by and if you are up for a steep walk back they are in walking distance.
This motel turned out to be one of the hidden gems of our many travels to New Zealand North and South!

We spent 3 days based at Manganui as we toured Northland. Fantastic views from our unit not only out to Doubtless Bay but also of the working wharf below. Accommodation was excellent and the host very helpful and talkative. Great options for dinning nearby either via walk down well lit path or short car ride. The meal at Waterfront Cafe & Bar was exceptional. We did most of the Heritage trail which passes right by the Motel which is very interesting. If you are into walking, its an easy walk to the nearby pa site and Coopers beach.

Mangonui Motel is a gem. The views from every room in our upstairs room were simply stunning, the comfort and decor were great, but the crowning glory is the attention to detail, care and kindness of the owners, Chester and Debbie.
Our two night stay was a highlight of our far north holiday. The hints and advice offered by Debbie helped us find local spots to pause at on our way up to Cape Reinga. Our unit was spacious, spotlessly clean, comfortable and well appointed.
To emphasise just how great our experience here was, after we left an electrical appliance behind, Chester posted it across the country to our home, and would not accept reimbursement of his costs. Fantastic .

Winter - get out of big city - Mangonui Motel was our base to explore this beautiful part of the country. We could just have easily stayed at the motel. Views are spectacular, and access to the township very handy (although a walk up the hill at night requires a few stops). Chester and Deb (owners) are full of local knowledge and can offer suggestions to assist in your enjoyment of the stay. We borrowed some rods and headed of North for a fish (not going to brag). There is so much to see and do you will need/want more time. Cannot recommend highly enough. Will not be eating fish and chips for a while.

A last minute overnight stop in Mangonui, we were delighted that our motel find was such a great one and just perfect for what we needed after a day's driving. The owners were lovely and very helpful. Great value too!
Cosy unit that had everything we needed. The TV/SKY instructions were super helpful, as was the excellent quality frypan and cooking utensils. Wow-factor water & hill views, beautiful sunrise, quiet spot, warm and comfortable beds. Attention to detail is great. We'll be back :)
