Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Popped into this old hotel for a drink only to be served by the rudest person ever. She never engaged with us at all and in fact spent the entire time talking to her offsider, whilst serving us. We returned the glasses to the bar upon leaving and received no acknowledgement, she was too busy still talking, even though we were right in front of her. Nothing wrong with the pub, just don't go for the service.

What a perfect spot to spend a couple of days. The old style hotel rooms are clean and comfortable, staff very friendly especially Aurora. The view from my veranda bedroom was amazing - well worth the so reasonable rates. Local seafood so good!

A fabulous and nostalgic place to visit for a cold beer, one of the real old school kiwi pubs that has everything whether it’s a pub lunch, a gamble on the pokies or a bet on the horses. Look out for a warm welcome from the live in house wildlife. Enjoy……..

We stopped in for a drink and enjoyed the atmosphere. It is what I would call a genuine kiwi pub, something out of the past, which is a good thing. Pigs heads, crayfish etc on the walls etc all add to the ambience. Well worth a visit.

The accomodation wasn’t much with a communal bathrooms and very basic rooms. The highlight was the view in the morning which looked straight over the harbour. The pub was friendly and the locals welcoming but the highlight was the fish and chip shop attached to one side of the pub. The fish and chips were fantastic, a delicious crispy batter with beautiful fresh fish.

We had fish n chips here and they were tasty and well priced. We later ate at the one at the wharf which was more expensive and probably not as nice. The hotel will grill fish as well as batter. We went again and had burgers- NO!! The patty was thin, and the bacon pretty low quality. We didn’t finish our food. My house Chardonnay was undrinkable.

Arriving in Mangonui late afternoon on 28 December is probably brave, to say the least! After being offered great accommodation at a huge price we popped into the local Pub which offers accommodation too. Met by a lovely Bar Lady who introduced us to Paddy O'Leary who offered us their last room - " its small" he said.. "here's the key, go have a look". Spotless! Tea/ coffee facilities, TV with some type of satellite, a great shower and most magnificent out look from the shared balcony were all we needed! A great price too. Bed was comfortable, and the shower had fantastic pressure. What more did we need. For anyone wanting a quiet night, this is not the place to stay. Having said that, after driving around 3 - 4 hours in the heat of summer, to get there, we were pretty shattered, and fell asleep just as the party began in the pub. We never heard a thing! Recommended for a night or two. The pub is your typically Irish pub. Competitions, pool tables and pokies. We will be back.

I stayed here for 4 nights - and after taking 1 day as a rest I used the other 3 days to tour the upper part of NZ by motorcycle. Very helpful and friendly management and really good rates. All the facilities including a cafe down stairs and another one very nearby it suited me perfectly

Apparently the most northerly hotel in NZ. Cool old building. We had fish and chips (with vinegar on the side) for lunch in the garden bar over looking the bay. It was delightful. Highly recommended if you are visiting Mangonui.
