I was looking for an accommodation in Hua Lien on Tripadvisor, and this property had awesome reviews. But what sealed the deal for me was the appearance of the gorgeous rooms, when I went to their website (echovilla.com)
I stayed at the 2nd floor room, which has 2 floors, and a glass rooftop on the 2nd floor for you to see the skies/stars. The room was awesome, clean, spotless, well-equipped, comfortable and absolutely gorgeous! It is so difficult to get ourselves out of the room! We simply wanted to relax in the room the whole day.
Located just 10 mins drive from Hua Lien Train Station, it is tucked away in a quiet but convenient location. The super nice owner, Ah Cheng provides complimentary transport in his vintage cars to and fro the train station, and helps you call for taxis when you want to get anywhere. He is the best host ever! Extremely kind, sincere, thoughtful, approachable and helpful, he gives great recommendations for food and places to visit and basically goes all out to ensure that we are well taken care of. He and his family live in the property as well. Probably due to the exclusivity of this home-stay (there are 5 differently themed guest rooms available), you'll get very personalized service and be treated just like family. His mum makes the loveliest breakfast for us, which is delivered to our room in the morning. On one day when the weather was cooler, he replaced fresh mango juice with hot nice coffee; When he noticed that I got a big mosquito bite on my arm, he offered to bring me an ointment to apply for it; He called us after we left Hua Lien, to make sure we've returned to Taipei safely. Such is the level of thoughtfulness of the owner, that makes the visit so distinctively unique from other home-stays.
Ah Cheng could help to arrange for a driver/guide for you to visit the various places in Hua Lien. I unwittingly arranged for another guide before heading to Hua Lien, but Ah Cheng came to meet the guide just to make sure that this guide is bringing us to the right places.
I love this place so much, and would not hesitate to stay here again when I return to Hua Lien. The price might be slightly steeper compared to other home-stays, but it is definitely money well spent. Staying in this glass house is definitely one of the memorable and enjoyable highlights in my Hua Lien weekend getaway.

Just visited this place with friends.
The host is super friendly, helpful and considerate.
Ever since the confirmation of booking, arrival and even departure of the villa, the host is willing to help all the time, and is very enthusiastic to help you discover the beauty of Hualien.
Hualien and Taitung have been regarded as the back garden of Taiwan. If you wish to explore this garden, certainly go to Echo villa where a sense of serenity is provided together with a stylish interior design.

We contacted the owner of the B&B (Ah Cheng/阿呈) by phone to make our reservation about 2 months in advance of our stay. I would highly recommend everyone to book as early as possible as the rooms are filled quite quickly. You can book the rooms via their website or give Ah Cheng a call. We originally booked for 2 nights, but one week before our stay, we had to cancel the 2nd night due to personal reasons. We called Ah Cheng and he was extremely helpful and stated if he managed to get another reservation for the room for our 2nd night, we wouldn't have to pay any penalty. Luckily Echo Villa rooms are in high demand and the room was taken by someone else so we ended up only paying for one night's accomodation.
We originally wanted to book Steller Attic (觀星閣), but it was already taken so we booked Star Baka (星巴卡) instead. Star Baka was very nice, the living area of the room had a glass roof which on a clear night (unfortunately, it was cloudy when we stayed there), I'm sure you can see the stars while sitting on the sofa. There is a hanging seat in the corner of the room (see photos on their website) which is very nice to relax in after a day of siteseeing in Hualian. The only problem is that you will be fighting with your roommate on who gets to sit in that chair! The bathroom has glass walls (with roll down blinds inside) so if you are not using the bathroom, you can roll up the blinds and it make the room appear bigger. We had the bathroom window slightly open during the night and we could see fireflies in the tree right outside while showering. It was such a great experience! There is a spacious balcony with a table and 2 chairs. You can relax outdoors if the bugs/mosquitos do not bother you.
Remember to bring mosquito repellent as the mosquitos in Hualian are quite vicious! The back of the B&B is facing a mountainside with lots of trees and plants (which is very pretty), there are bugs and insects (not so nice).
The breakfast was tasty and consisted of a sandwich, deep fried prawn cake, fruits and a glass of freshly squeezed juice. The breakfast is prepared by Ah Cheng's mom and personally delivered to your room in the morning (8:30am). We enjoyed breakfast in our mini-living room area under the sun, which was very nice. There is a canopy above the glass roof which automatically retracts and extends out. If you like enjoy breakfast under the sun in the morning, you can ask Ah Cheng to manually retract the canopy.
The common areas of the B&B gives a very cozy feel with soft soothing music playing in the background. Ah Cheng likes to collect vintage items so there are lot of knick knacks decorating everywhere within the B&B.
There is free wifi and we had good signal strength in our room.
Ah Cheng is extremely friendly and courteous. He is always available if you need help or advice and you can always email/call him prior to your trip.
I would also highly recommend to book your train tickets in advanced (if you are travelling by train from Taipei), especially if you want to take the express trains. We departed Taipei on a Monday morning and returned to Taipei on a Tuesday evening and the trains were full. You can purchase train tickets up to 2 weeks in advance on Taiwan Railways website or using the ibon machines at any 7-11 (convenience store) in Taiwan.
Ah Cheng also organised a car with a driver/tour guide for our 2 days in Hualian. The cost was TWD 2,500/day (8 hours). If you have any specific places you like to visit you can let them know or they will bring you to see the major tourist attractions depending on the length of your visit. Our driver was friendly (but only spoke Chinese, which maybe a problem for some of the non-Mandarin speaking guests) and helped to take lots of photos for us.
Note on Taroko Gorge:
If you like to hike and don't mind going up and down the mountains, it's well worth finding and hiring an expert guide for Taroko Gorge. You will need to apply for permits in advance if you want to enter into the ecological protection areas. Check the Taroko Gorge website for permit application details. It's well worth starting early to avoid being stuck in the middle of the big tour groups which ruins the photo opportunities and also makes you feel as if you haven't escaped the busy city life at all! If you plan to walk through to Water Curtain (Shui-lian-dong) at the end of Baiyang Trail, remember to bring flip-flops, raincoat or umbrella and a towel. Also worth bringing a flashlight as you will pass through 7 tunnels and some of them are long and dark.

My family just returned home from our annual Taiwan vacay and everyone unanimously agreed that Hualien and Echo Villa were the highlights of our trip. Away from the city buzz, Echo Villa is surrounded by calm and nature - a much needed refreshing change of pace and air.
Kevin (the owner) is warm, easygoing and more than happy to help with anything. He provided tons of local food recommendations, organised transport and a private tour through his tie-ups with other companies - which also means prices are more reasonable.
If you enjoy hiking, there are a few easy mountain trails just a 10 minute walk away. If you enjoy eating, home-made breakfast is provided and nearby Hualien city offers lots of delicious quality food options (just ask Kevin!). If you prefer staying in, then Echo Villa is perfect as nature is right outside your (floor-to ceiling) glass windows within the comforts of your cosy room. There’s always something for everyone.
We stayed for 3 nights and wished we had more time here. This place is a keeper - I will definitely be back!

Ever since my friend showed me a photo of Stellar Attic's room, I've been wanting to visit Hualien and stay in Echo Villa. Made the booking within 10 minutes after the 3 months window period opened.
Ah Wu hosted us, fetching us from another minus and to the train station, and the room was extremely beautiful. With its full length windows, and glass ceiling, it enabled us to be close to nature, in the comfort of the room. Bath amenities provided were of excellent quality, and breakfast served was delicious.
It's a place I would love to stay in for a couple more days, alas time was limited. Definitely recommend anyone who wants to relax and be away from the hustle and bustle of the city to stay at Echo Villa.

Had stayed for 4 nights with my family of 4. Peaceful place with fresh air. However I don't feel at home like what the feedback I'd read here before I'd booked. Guess all the positive feedbacks here had given me high expectations. I feel like am just staying in another hotel.
The booking system is kinda crappy. It hang on me after I accidentally clicked back button, and the dates/room I'd booked was locked although I didn't proceed with next step and I can't redo the booking. I had to call the host to release and manually send me the paypal email for me to pay the deposit. I would say it was a stressful room booking experience.
Also, I didn't receive any confirmation email on the booking stating the dates and itemised charges. The only email I'd received was the paypal requesting for deposit. So, it's better to print screens and save a copy when you booked online. The room rate is for 2 persons and if there is extra person, it is chargeable. Do read carefully on the t & c. I had a difficult time, i can't read well in chinese words and the booking system is in chinese.
Host promised me to check for me on whether we can go whale watching in Mar but he didn't follow up and get back to me. I only got to know it's not suitable period for it when I reached the villa.
It's kind of disappointing, but luckily I had planned some filler activities and that saved the day!
Plus points -
- The breakfast was good as it's homemade by the host's mummy.
- The place is near the train station, about 10mins drive

Friendly staff and nice fresh fruits in the room. Pretty basic comfort. We were a european couple staying in this weird hotel. Our room (POP Style) was really small, with the shower and the toilet not separated ... Meaning the 'mini bathroom' was completely flooded if you wanted to pee after someone took a shower !
We didn't have breakfast with the other people, don't know why.
We stayed mid-october and had awfull rainy weather. Probably not the best time of year to visit.

It’s truly a tranquil scene from the house facing one side of the forest. The other sides however are dilapidated houses. If you Google the location it is not near the night markets and central Hualien but what you can’t see is that it’s amongst very old and dilapidated houses which came as quite a surprise to us as the rooms do cost quite a bit per room per night. However, marketing was done right and the pictures are really what you can see from One side of the house, facing the forest.
They have a booking system on their website that you can only book the rooms and pay a deposit of 50% using credit card. Upon arrival however they only accept cash. This was not stated in their website. Also, they charge by per head, which is also not stated in their website. Dishonest as after many email exchanges knowing the number of pax the owners failed to bill me correctly. Until arrival we were asked to top up for every extra person. Perhaps their website is only in chinese which may pose as a barrier to understanding the many terms and conditions.
We booked 3 nights but because of their sudden ‘per head charge’ we decided to cut short the stay and check out the next day. Bearing in mind we paid 50% of our entire stay, we also topped up for the extra persons ( kids ) for that night. We were willing to forego 50% because it was not worth it and the owners were not upfront about it from the start. The owners were still not happy with the amount and wanted us to TOP up again, another sgd200 before they let us leave. Of course we were not willing to TOP up as we already paid more than half of the entire stay including the extra head charges for the kids. Suddenly they could accept credit card payment again. It was quite an ordeal dealing with spongers in this sense.
