Detailed Reviews
A really nice hotel - comfortable and very spacious rooms. Really nice breakfast with a lot of options in the morning. Some of the friendliest staff I have met - they brought us up whatever we needed (toothbrush, razor). The manager drove us to the train station at 11pm at night so we could book the tickets for early AM the next day. And he would not take any compensation. Next time I go back, I will certainly stay at this hotel.

Stayed for 2 nights in Jan 2013. Informed them beforehand of my train number and arrival timing and was picked up by them. Very nice hotel with cosy room. It is situated in the middle of the 2 night markets and the city centre. 15mins walk to all these 3 locations. Bicycle provided by the hotel if you needed one and the staffs are ever ready to help if you have questions. Will definitely stay back in this hotel if i go Hua Lien again.

I stayed for 2 nights at this lovely hotel. It's a bit out of the town centre which means it is quiet. The staff were lovely and most spoke English, although the day staff weren't as proficient as the evening staff. We were given a box of complimentary muachi on arrival. The room was spacious and clean, beds were soft for Taiwan. The wifi worked well in the rooms and there are two PC's in the lobby you can use as well. The buffet breakfast was good and if buffet food isn't your thing there are restaurants nearby.
The hotel is a short (10-15 minute) walk from the best night market we visited in Taiwan, ask the staff for directions. It's also basically across the road from a large supermarket/department store if you need supplies.
The only negative thing I have to say is we booked a bus tour through the hotel, I asked if it would be in English but it was completely in Chinese! I would book tours elsewhere, although I went during the week when it isn't as busy.

Great services provided by staff.
Furthermore, rental of bicycle is free. Good for having a late night cycle in Hualien where the streets are quieter.
Room is value for money. Acceptable size and clean.
Will definitely choose this hotel if I visit Hualien again!

It was an extremely pleasant stay at Cullinan. Quite near to Far East Mall, and I remember it being relatively near to Zi Qiang Night Market; great place for food. Service was excellent. Arranged for transfer from the train station but their vehicle broke down, they settled it by requesting for us to take a taxi which they paid directly to the driver upon our arrival. Breakfast was nice too. I stayed there in January 2014 (Yes, my review was severely delayed, I only remember when I want to book Cullinan again for my upcoming trip in Dec - they are fully booked on the day I am going to Hualien.)

This no frills place is ideal for anyone with an eye for a good deal but has a restricted budget. You get picked up from the station if you notify the hotel a day before hand, good breakfast, free bikes and the rooms are comfortable and of a good size. Although we did not use it there is even a laundry in the house. And the Dongdamen market is within ride-able distance. Taxis can be arranged to any other destinations in town at affordable rates. Staff have restricted English but are helpful. I would recommend this place for any practical traveler who is not in need of anything fancy.

I visited with my wife and kids + 2 more friends with their families. Cullinan provides excellent value for money. I didn't expect it to provide all the services they did for the price. Breakfast, pick up and drop from the hotel, free wifi, clean hygienic rooms, 2 double beds in the room, even special food arrangements at breakfast since we were vegetarians - all for TWD 2500 inclusive of taxes (USD 80). Not bad at all. The staff is very good. Nothing to complain.

Stayed for 2 nights in this hotel, both room and bathroom are spacious, clean and comfortable. They provide laundry service on the 8th floor, which cost TWD100 per wash and additional TWD100 for the usage of the dryer. It is about 10 mins drive from the train station to the hotel, and we would not suggest to walk. We were told earlier that it was a 20 minutes walk, but it turned out to be 45 minutes.
There is a shopping mall nearby, just around the corner. The popular nightmarket is about 5 mins drive. The staff is friendly, helpful and efficient in helping us to get the taxis. We booked the private Taroko Gorge day tour with the hotel, and the driver (Mr Yan) is very knowledgeable, helpful and makes an excellent driver-cum-guide.
The breakfast in the hotel is slightly below average with not much variety, just simple enough to settle the day's meal without much fuss.

We got the "Sweet Double Room" as shown on their website (translated by Google). It was spacious and has a window so I'm good. If you stayed at a hostel in Taipei and you're claustrophobic you probably know what I'm talking about.
Location wasn't so bad. It's near a mall and 7-Eleven. Most of the places we wanted to go (popular foodie spots) were within walking distance except for the Zhiquian night market which we had to get a cab.
Breakfast buffet was alright. Love the free chips and free WiFi.

We had arranged for the hotel transport to pick us up from Hualian train station at about 7:50pm. However, due to a longer-than-expected train ride from Taipei, we only managed to reach Hualian at about 8:10pm. We weren’t able to contact the hotel as we did not have a local calling card, and thus we weren’t expecting the hotel transport to wait for us.
But lo and behold… when we got out of the train station, there he was, a nice gentleman from Cullinan (in shirt and tie no less, though he looked like he was melting in the summer heat) waiting and looking out for us! And it was a private pick up car – with comfortable leather seats and strong air conditioning for the summer. I was a bit surprised at the luxurious pick up. Though when we checked out, the car wasn’t available, so they arranged a complimentary taxi to bring us to the train station.
Anyway, after we got to the hotel, we were checked in quickly by the friendly reception. We were then greeted by a normal looking hotel room, but what caught my eyes were their toiletries and door magnets! The toiletries were laid up as a jigsaw puzzle to show a picture of Hualien’s scenery. A nice and creative touch. And for the ‘please do not disturb’ and ‘please make up room’ signs, instead of door hangers, they were in the form of magnets! Which means, the door is a big magnetic field. So tempted to take these magnets back – but of course I didn’t. (:
What say us?
✔ Clean room: The room was big and spacious and it had everything we needed (clean sheets, towels, cable, wifi, etc…). Room was made up nicely the next day as well.
✔ Hospitable Reception: Lady at counter was friendly and helpful. She recommended us places to visit, tours to join/not join and streets to have our good meals. If not for her, we would have missed an excellent (free) concert going on at Rainbow night market! She also helped us to call for taxi to the train station on our 2nd day, where we needed to take the bus shuttle to Taroko.
✘ Average Breakfast: Complimentary breakfast was nothing fantastic and it was the same fare for both days. Nonethless, it’s a small issue as cheap and excellent food options are just around the hotel’s corner.
✘ Location: A bit of walking distance to the city centre, probably about 15 minutes walk, unless taking a cab is not an issue for you. And train station isn’t that near, probably 20-25 minutes walk? So best option is to take cab if you have to travel to and fro from the hotel to the train station. But free for us on the days when we checked in and out.
Recommended? If you love to stay right smack in the city centre, this is not for you. Otherwise, it’s an excellent option for a short and comfortable stay at Hualien.
