The hotel is charming. They have nice clean rooms, comfortable beds, friendly staff, very nice breakfast buffet even an alarm on the door should anyone try to open the door when you're asleep. The fire escape mechanism seems bizarre, but could be very effective. Each room has a deploy-able arm and in the closets is a harness with a long rope enabling you to descend. We found it unusual and a bit funny, but that's how they prepare for the worst. An example of how they are mostly one step ahead of you.
In the basement is an entertainment center, where you can pass a bit of time playing games (table soccer, basketball, wall climbing, ...) should it rain or you have to wait for something/someone. Did I mention most are free??
When you stay longer, don't forget to eat at their restaurant. OK - you need to pay at the cashier on a different floor, but they do give you (as their guest) a nice discount, making dining there even more interesting. Food was of good quality and more than sufficient for us.
Did I mention yet the breakfast buffet was very complete, good quality and fresh?
Very good are the bikes you can use for free. They test everything before they let you bike. We took a several trips during the day and one nightly trip to the airbase (see further) and found it to be enchanting.
Unfortunately my son developed a bit of a fever the day we were scheduled to go and they prolonged our stay without any problem, at the same rate.
We stayed in July 2013, smack in the middle of Taiwanese military excises. Near Hualien is an important airbase, so we saw not a lot but numerous F16's, C-130's and a lot of other military aircraft fly over. The best part was that from our hotel room we had an excellent view of the aircraft descending into Hualien airbase. For those who like jets as well - at the nearby Carrefour, there's a third floor giving you a good view on the airstrip. Those who are afraid of nises - landing aircraft don't make a lot of noise - we slept (light sleepers) right through numerous airplanes landing early in the morning. Maybe because the noise is limited or thanks to the quality of the rooms?
I think that the main issue with deciding on whether or not to stay in this hotel would be location. It's very close to the train station - less than a 5 minute walk. However this means that the town centre with the largest choice of shops and restaurants is about 30 minutes away - although there are shops and restaurants near the hotel.
Breakfast was a disappointment - very Asian, with little for the non-Asian taste.
It is a unique aspect of life in Asia that shops are open and people are about till at least 10pm.
The mild weather was ideal to immerse in the atmosphere of the city.
The location is great if you want to be next to the station but about a 25 minute walk into Hualien center where you will find most of the restaurants and shops.
The reception staff helped us to book an excellent tour of Taroko Gorge. It is definitely worth seeing.
However, the location of the hotel isn't ideal even though it is near the train station as going to the city center would take up some time. Hence, I would suggest that booking a tour guide/driver for a day would be an excellent choice if one would like to tour around Hualien. As for breakfast, it is buffet style but mostly Asian cuisine. There is also a separate menu where guests can choose from but with limited choices.
