Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Great location with the beach on the front door step. Well appointed accommodation - if you love nature, this is your place with dolphins in the bay and resident penguins. Would love to have stayed longer.

The perfect retro nostalgic holiday cottage. Furnished full of character with wooden floors and a wood fireplace. Kitchen has everything you need including a large fridge and the bathroom though very small has a great shower. The star of the show is the views – panoramic absolute beachfront views from almost every room in the house. Stunning!

We stayed 4 nights and chose here because we love penguins and dolphins and looking for peace and tranquility. We stayed in the RIGHT studio and we had x2 blue penguins nesting underneath, although noisy and smelly, it was a small price to pay for what we saw. We'd seen them leave around 5am to 515am and to our surprise they came home 10pm while we were still awake and with the light on,that was epic, and we saw them off at 5am on.our last morning too...priceless. Dolphins, pretty much hung out in the surf almost all day, just beautiful..if you go to the lookout at curioscape around 8pm you'll have a good chance of seeing yellow eyed penguin. Highly recommend nugget point, McLean falls and petrified forest..I wish we had taken binoculars, and insect repellent and fly spray a must. Perfect location if you want to relax and watch dolphins from your couch...would love for my friends to experience this. Dani was awesome and has wetsuits and surf boards for hire too. Hope we get the chance to come back.

It’s been about 12 years since we last stayed here and we still love it as much as ever. The location is great, set in the dunes just above the golden beach at Porpoise Bay and a beautiful10-min walk down the beach to Curio Bay and all its geological wonders. The best part was that every evening after sunset the little blue penguins come up to their burrows around and under the house. There is a wee bit of penguin noise from time to time at night but we really enjoyed it. The room was very spacious with great views of the dunes, beach, and ocean, and lots of windows to enjoy the view. The bed was very comfortable and we had excellent sleeps. There is no TV but there is a good Wifi connection and a Bluetooth speaker to hook into to listen to music. We made use of the kitchenette and prepared a few good basic meals. There isn’t really much in the way of restaurants and shops in the area, so it’s wise to bring all your own supplies. There were a couple of bar heaters in the unit which was more than sufficient in keeping the place warm in the cool weather. There is also a washer and dryer on site if needed. Overall we really love this place and would highly recommend it to others traveling to Curio Bay.

I booked on the wrong dates and Dani was incredibly supportive and understanding :-) !! Curio Bay is an amazing place in its own right and a wonderful base from which to explore the natural beauty and history of the Catlins.

Fabulous studio, right on the beach, even if you don't see the penguins you can listen to them at night in the garden. Dolphins very close in shore to entertain you, fabulous beach to wander along and and a well equipped luxury studio. A great place as a base to explore the Catlins. No TV but you don't need one with the view from the property. Excellent.

Due to a delayed flight we arrived about 8.45pm just in time for a walk along the beach before nightfall. The bed was really comfortable and the view amazing. Unfortunately we were there for just the one night. Hope to return one day

Thanks so much for this wonderful place to stay. We had little blue penguins on the doorstep and woke to dolphins in the bay in front of us. We were also lucky with the weather. The bed was the most comfortable I've slept in. The Catlins is a must see and has so much to offer. 10 out of 10

There were a few options here as the owners, Nick and Dani Stratford, have a Beach House Apartment attached to their own home (#521 Waikawa-Curio Bay Road); a couple of Boutique Studios along the road at #507; and Curio Cottage at #501. They have a working farm too so won't always be around but we found them very friendly on both our visits. My wife and I stayed in the apartment back in November 2013 and this time around we booked one of the Boutique Studios three months in advance for a couple of nights on 21 & 22 March 2020, costing $260 per night. I met Dani at the house to say hello, make the credit card payment and to collect the key. At the time none of us knew how big an impact Covid-19 would have and it's possible that we would have been amongst the last overseas visitors to stay at the accommodation since that time, six months ago! The road follows the coastline and the properties overlook Porpoise Bay which has a lovely stretch of sand. Just keep your eyes peeled for the house number on a post at the end of the driveway (the studios are back towards the Fortrose road junction). We had "Studio Left", i.e. on the left side at the top of the driveway. The semi-detached studios share a laundry between them and during our stay we were able to agree with the guests next door mutually suitable times for using this (otherwise we didn't see or hear much of them). The studio has a spacious living area incorporating the large bed, a comfy settee, a dining table and a kitchenette. There was no television however there is a speaker with Bluetooth connectivity to play music. Free wifi is also provided. The absence of television was an initial attraction however we missed news announcements relating to Covid-19 and were blissfully unaware how fast events were moving. The ensuite had a large walk-in shower (but no bath). A hairdryer and toiletries were provided. The kitchenette was equipped with a hob, a microwave oven, fridge, a sink and the usual pots, crockery, glasses, etc. In this vicinity there are only a couple of options to dine out during limited hours - Niagara Falls Cafe and at the Tumu Toka Heritage Centre - and no nearby shops so come prepared accordingly. We brought some food with us for breakfasts, managed to make a meal on our first evening and ate out on our second night at the Heritage Centre which is within walking distance. A portable oil-filled heater, which we found was reasonably effective, provides warmth when required in the living area and the bathroom has underfloor heating which takes the chill off the tiles. The large windows and patio doors provided a panoramic view of the beach and the latter leads on to a decking area with a table, seats and a BBQ which we didn't use during our stay as there was always a "fresh breeze"! The curtains were effective in preventing the studio becoming too bright at sunrise. During our stay we walked to and from the Heritage Centre and the Petrified Forest along the beach. At the Centre there is a small section of boulders to pick your way across to get to the steps from the beach. Bear this in mind if returning along the beach at nightfall and take a torch. Also note where you need to get access to the studio from the beach on your return - it is not obvious at night through the dunes and we missed the path and ended up coming through another nearby property. We had the added entertainment of wondering during our night beach walk if each clump of seaweed was just that or a seal which had come ashore! Thankfully we didn't come across any seals. Sadly we didn't come across any penguins on this visit either. We experienced the yellow-eyed variety at the Petrified Forest and the blue variety at the accommodation last time around but both proved elusive on this occasion. If you are looking for a comfortable base in a true beach location to explore the area this would be somewhere to consider. The studio is not serviced during the stay and the amenities and decor are plain to give some perspective to the "boutique" description.

This was a wonderful location situated right on the beach. The area is beautiful and the petrified forest and waterfall walks are close by. Travelling late July we encountered icy roads driving in and arriving in the dark there were no outside lights so we weren't sure which unit of 2 we were in. The unit was nicely laid out but the heater was inadequate for the room so we were very cold. Bring your own milk, none was provided and there is nowhere to buy groceries close by at night time but the holiday park just up the road can probably sell supplies during the day. Nice coffee and breakfast at Naigara Falls, a 10 minute drive.
