This place is nothing short of a surfers paradise.
We stayed in the main house which is a beautiful 4-bed traditional Indonesian wooden chalet less than 100 metres from the beach. Our double-bedroom was swept and cleaned every day which is such a luxury when you’re salty and sandy 90% of the time. All of our meals were prepared on site in the kitchen of the main house. The food was fresh and super tasty, a great mix of traditional Indonesian food and western cuisine. We ate all of our meals as a group which really added to the atmosphere and helped us (a couple) to gel with the other guys in the group. We’d give a 10/10 for the facilities, cleanliness, attentiveness, flexibility and laundry services.
My girlfriend, Amber, is a true beginner surfer and as a result was a little bit nervous to visit the famed waves of the Mentawai Islands. However, thanks to Pete and Inne, she surfed every day of our holiday (sometimes twice a day) and more than tripled her average wave count. Their wonderfully modern boat was ready twice a day to take us to some of the most pristine reef breaks I’ve ever seen. They expertly chose spots that had a wide range of waves to suit Amber (a beginner) and the other guys on our trip (advanced). Pete is nothing short of a Mentawai surf expert and he took Amber out himself on a number of occasions making her feel super safe, taken care of and encouraged.
I’d give this place 1000000/10 if I could, truly the trip of a lifetime. Thank you Inne and Pete, we hope to see you again soon!

I don’t know where to start…
The camp has an organized lift to pick you up/drop you off from the airport and ferry port. Makes getting to the destination super easy.
This camp is a homestay. Maximum amount of guests at a time is 9. (In the time I stayed here, the most was only 4 guests) Unlike a hotel/resort, the hosts actually get you know, make you feel welcome and at home.
The camp is on the beach, has beautiful green scenery with spacious bungalows cleaned on a daily basis. Mosquito nets are provided. Bathroom is big.
The whole property is well looked after and maintained.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all included. Never had a bad meal here. Very generous servings and It was all fresh and delicious! Kitchen always smelt divine. A lot of love went into the food. On my last day here I said I hope it’s the mie goreng for lunch and they specially made it (Pete went into the kitchen and asked the staff to make it)
The staff are friendly and welcoming. Heaps of coconut trees around and it was never a problem for the staff to cut a fresh one down and open it for you to drink. I lost my Apple Watch at telescopes surf break and even though it wasn’t found, staff member Ferdy snorkeled for at least 90 minutes trying to find it.
Pete is the surf guide and has fantastic knowledge of the breaks, tides and conditions.
I was here for 3 weeks and surfed every single day. Even on days it was considered to be “flat” we still got waves. He managed to score us a few sessions where we had a surf break all to ourselves which was awesome!!! (Breaks can get quite busy at times)
I only started surfing June 2021 so this was my first surf trip. In these 3 weeks, my surfing improved a bit. Not only am I getting onto waves a lot easier, I’ve also started doing cutbacks/turns (wasn’t able to do these before!) Thank you to Pete for the tips.
Pete’s wife Inne co-hosts the camp. She was always full of positive energy. I really enjoyed the surfs I got to have with her. She was such a great vibe, very helpful and would cheer me on.
Thank you Pete, Inne and the rest of Awera staff for being part of my first surf trip. It was an awesome experience. I had a couple of the best surfs of my life here. Looking forward to seeing you all again =)

Awera island surf camp is for the hardcore surfer looking to get the best possible waves with the smallest crowds. The family run operation offers modest yet super comfortable beach huts and they are some of the most affordable in the island chain. However, it is the food that really sets this place apart from the competition. I have been on 5 tour boats and another land operation and this was by far the best food. Pete's ( the owner ) wife Inee and her staff prepare 3 huge meals a day that are very balanced and healthy. They understand what a surfer spending 4 to 8 hours a day in the water requires. It is a solid balance of western style and Indonesian cuisine food that is not overly spicy.
As far as the surf it in one of the only land operations in the area with a perfect wave right out front requiring only a 10 minute paddle or 2 minute boat ride. "Suicides" is an ultra hollow, fast, grinding shallow right hander that offers a ridable wave nearly every day. I would advise reef booties except for expert level. As far as the rest of the waves, Pete's 10 years of every day experience in the area will insure you the best wave with the least amount of people. Whether it is Telescopes, Icelands, Ombak Tidor, Scarecrows, or 7 Palm's Pete's knowledge of the wind and tide will always insure fun sessions or barrels. There is still plenty of magic in Mentawa"si, you just have to stay at the right place.

Awera Island Surf Camp is the ideal place to stay for the surfer who is looking for comfort and epic wave guiding access to some of the most perfect waves in the area. The owners and staff are knowledgable, friendly and genuine. Unlike the experience of being isolated on a large yacht or bunched into a group at the more expensive chic resorts, the surf camp experience here offers a more authentic bungalow surf-trip experience paired with personalized service and an excellent kitchen crew. Comfortable cruiser boat to plenty of breaks for surf options, or if you feel like taking a day off from the boat, there is both surf and excellent diving on the reef out front, as well as beach and jungle explorations at the edges of the property. If you're a surfer that wants to make the most of your time in the water, appreciates a variety of good meals, and looking for a safe place with good company, this is the place. It's also pretty rad that they have a small library with decent collection of surf publications in the case you want to fully disconnect and soak up some of the legendary surf stories of the surrounding breaks. Most appropriately fitting accomodation for remote island surf lifestyle in the area. Book it and be stoked!

Awera surf camp is great! It's more like a homestay than a resort. The accommodation is modest yet completely comfortable. The guests eat with the family and play with the kids (optional). The staff are all lovely.
Pete is a great surf guide. He kept us 1 step ahead of the crowds the whole time.
We had very good waves this year and mostly surfed with just our crew. That's cause Pete always seems 1 step ahead...
If you're after low key and reasonably priced accommodation in the middle of this wave rich zone, you can't go past Awera Surf Camp

I’ve been on many surf trips over the years but this one is easily the best surf trip of my life. We were a group of 5 and everyone else shares the same sentiment.
Pete and Inne are amazing hosts, they are incredibly accomodating and caring. Pete will score you the best uncrowded waves of your life and Inne will cook up a storm 3 times a day.
We are definitely returning next year (and the years after that!)

I have been coming to Awera Island surf camp since 2017, and have only missed the COVID years. Last year was eventful as I broke my Fibula out in the Surf, and the care and attention I received was second to none.
This year has been a bit more sedate, as the waves were smaller, and I escaped unscathed . In spite of testing conditions, Pete worked tirelessly to find the best surf option available.
The home cooked Indonesian Food was up to its usual high standard, my favourite being the Spicy BBQ Coral trout. Servings are very generous, and the atmosphere around the dinner table is fantastic.
I have made some great new friends from NSW and NZ, and am counting down the weeks til I can return, now 49 weeks!
The surf camp is the perfect blend of roughing it like the first surf explorers, while actually living in home comfort, in beautiful front bungalows with en suite, or for the more social, sharing the big house .
Catching up with Pete and Inne and the staff feels like catching up with old friends, and is definitely part of the charm.
This was my fifth trip, and the great vibe in the camp keeps drawing me back.

The Awera Island surf camp is everything anyone would ever want from surfing the Mentawais as a true surfer. Apart from the accomodation being second to none, the hospitality from Pete, Inne and their beautiful family and staff is just something you don’t get at a resort or anywhere else for that manner.
Pete absolutely rips, and knows all the breaks like the back of his hand, so you don’t bounce around on charter boats or inexperienced tour operators when the winds or swell don’t line up exactly. I surfed every day in world class waves.
The food was epic to say the least!! and really felt a part of the family and the island, not disconnected away in a resort.
If you are dreaming of a trip to the surf the best waves in the world, this is the only spot. Had so many memorable sessions surfing on my own or with just a friend out, until my arms pretty much wouldn’t work any more. Heading home with memories of a life time from this trip.
Thankyou Pete, Inne and your beautiful family.

Pete is a legend in his own lifetime and his family is amazing. His stoke for surfing and life is so infectious and really adds to the whole experience. His team is lovely and the resort has a fabulous family feel to it. The resort is so well placed for reaching a huge variety of breaks. We went at the end of November out of season and Pete’s knowledge of the waves and winds ensured we had uncrowded waves pretty much everyday. Pete would often sit on the beach in the morning checking the winds and swell and know exactly where to take us for the best waves. The food on the resort is brilliant. Home made surfing soul food to fuel and fire you up for a full day of waves. It’s a mixture of indo and western and they’ll make sure you get enough of whatever dishes you fancy. The other great thing is the way they sort out all your transfers from the airport in Padang and back which cuts through all the usual Indo scheduling craziness. The accommodation is simple, clean and well maintained. It feels and is very Indo with that American focus on customer service and comfort. I really can’t recommend these guys enough.
