Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The cabins are simple but clean with a small veranda. Other amenities are in reasonable condition.
We loved the kayaking and paddle boarding on the (very tidal) estuary and the inlet - interesting water flows but also really safe but you need to grab your chance while the tide is in. Lots of wildlife to be watched from the sea: seals. Kotuku, grey herons, spoon bills and bush birds. Farewell spit is an easy paddle from camp.
Super friendly owners

3 night stay in Puponga. We live in Golden Bay, but fancied a change of scenery from Pohara!! Quiet and peaceful (until we got there!), facilities good. Maybe something more for little kids would be good, like a play area/ swing etc. Lovely hosts. Beautiful and family friendly swimming spot, and obviously close to Wharariki, which is awesome!!
Hope to be back soon!!

Part of the family stayed in a motor home. 2 other couples stayed in cabins. The cabins are brand new. The only issue I would worry about (and the reason I didn’t give a perfect score) was there are 3 toilets and 3 showers. They are nice, but if it’s crowded you could wait for the bathroom. Shower and toilet are together in 2 bathrooms. The other toilet is separate as is the last shower. So it could be a problem. There aren’t many cabins... or a lot of places for campers... but there are lots of spots for tents. There are 2 kitchen areas. No ovens. But there is a barbecue. There is a beach very close by. Also several long walks nearby as well. I loved the location. I would go back!

Met owner of Farewell Gardens in January 2022, she seemed lovely, and we loved the camp ground. Called and made booking in April and told they had availability for our family of three for early January 2023. My partner and I organised time off work for our dates at Farewell Gardens. Owner contacted us in August to say that there was only a 3m x3m campsite available but that, in her experience, that’s as much as three people usually need. I responded that if we’d known in April that a 3m x3m campsite was all that was available we would have booked somewhere else for our summer holiday. Have been looking forward to our Farewell Gardens holiday all year and now we have to scramble and, hopefully, find somewhere else to stay in Golden Bay for these dates. Total lack of transparency and terrible communication. Definitely wouldn’t recommend.

We had two nights at Farewell Gardens as part of a top of the South Island road trip.
Farewell Gardens is a lovely small campground. The kitchen and bathroom facilities are clean and there is everything you need.
Alex and Bex were the best hosts. Very accomodating to us and our family dog, Ziggy. Alex had plenty of tips and advice for exploring the area.
With only 14 sites it felt like we got to know most of our fellow campers!
We'll be back to Pupongs and Farewell Gardens.

We stayed here for 6 nights in one of their on-site caravans with our daughter in a tent to the side. Great location as there is plenty to do in this part of the world if you like to explore.
Bathrooms clean with soap etc supplied, washrooms have paper towels, camp kitchens (2) small but very well appointed with fridges, cookers, microwaves, cutlery and dinnerware.
Good BBQ and a few essentials for sale in the office if needed.

Can be a bit windy up Farewell Spit way, and we did have a few blowy days, but this campground offers quite a bit of shelter via trees, fences, hedges etc.

We found ourselves volunteering at a whale stranding which was an incredible experience (although ultimately a very sad affair) which made the whole holiday very special combined with the good well-priced accommodation and plethora of day trip options by bike, foot or car.

Swimming options a bit limited - confined to estuary at full tide.

Although it wasn't cheap, the place is a bit out of order. Very few facilities (toilets) and not very clean. And very small kitchen rooms. In one of them the hot water boiler exploded and nobody was around to help or fix it.
I think there are better options in the area. Location is very nice.

For the price they are charging I am unsure how the management sleep at night! Very very tired accommodation, very dirty cooking facilities and continuous issue that the management either refused to remedy or were just not capable. Never again
