Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

What a fantastic find for somewhere to relax and enjoy life away from the pressures of always on connectivity. Camping amongst the bush with no cell reception or WiFi was just the wind down we (and the tweenager) needed! The tuis, moreporks, possums, cicadas, cows and goats are all the soundtrack you need.

Jo and the team do an awesome job of maintaining the family-run site. The kitchen, BBQs, toilets, and showers are all immaculate and very well provisioned. The cabins, too, are kept to a very high standard with lovely crisp linens and nice little design touches in each.

There's plenty to do to while away the time. Go for a wander up to Fossil Canyon and see the wild horses, wander along the railway line and through the tunnels that are only used by converted golf carts, or simply chill in the river. There are lots of other walks of caring lengths, and Whangamomona and Mount Damper Falls are only half an hour away.

There are also lots of sandlies - up its good to pack the repellant!

What a gem, we'll be back.

This is a hidden gem, a true blue kiwi campground in the middle of nowhere! Nestled in the Taranaki region of NZ North Island.
Found this campground by sheer luck online & now sits on the top of our list of ‘must visit’ campgrounds in NZ.

We were a family of 3 ( 2 adults & a teen ) in a VW RV so rented a powered site for 3 nights. Amazing super helpful hosts & team. Very clean facilities which include wood fired pizza oven, very well stocked kitchen
& super clean toilets.
Hats off to Jo & team of Tracy, Bill, it’s amazing how they maintain such high standards in such a remote location consistently. They also have few cabins which I have heard from guests has top hotel quality bedding & pillows!

did some amazing walks through the forgotten highway, also close to it is a couple of old early 1900 built tunnels, canyon tours and many other attractions

Must warn future guests that there is no wifi / mobile data so you will be forced to switch off your mobile which we didn’t mind at all. Also as you do, please respect the campgrounds and it’s hosts by being a tidy kiwi- wash your own dishes, tidy after using facilities, take your recyclable bottles with you back & respect nature

Pack insect repellents, a good torch, tramping gear ( if going on long treks) & bring extra cash if you want to locally sourced honey

In our two decades of camping & travels we would rate this campgrounds in the top 5 for its location, hospitality, facilities, walks, and experiences

Once again a huge thanks to Jo & team

This is a groovy little campground a little off the forgotten highway. The little cabins are a great option and there is a great outdoor fire option where you can roast marshmallows with the kids. Hosts were really helpful and this would be a great spot if you got a couple families together. The river runs along the edge of the property is a little hard to access in parts but very scenic and has some trout and eels if either of those catch your fancy. Lots of interesting DIY tramping options that start from the property. Recommended.

I had heard about Bushlands and read their reviews. So off we went (two couples) with our caravans and we stayed 2 nights. It is a little bit of a mission to get their - but well worth the effort. I had read the reviews before we left and can say they are accurate. We had a fine day and a wet one. One the fine day we walked to Fossil Canyon and on the wet day we walked the rail tunnels. Great experience. There are still some activities left - so we will be back. Mark is an excellent host - who created us on arrival and then provided very welcomed and useful tips of what to see and do. Also no radio, internet or cell phone reception. Fantastic.

We stayed twice over the Christmas 2019 break and returned for New Year 2020. This is camping the way it should be. Wonderful hosts who go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. There are numerous attractions to visit, or you can choose to relax in the tranquil camp setting. The communal camp area with kitchen and fire are a great place to mingle during the day or relax in the evening. The experice at the camp is the way any camp ground should be. We cant recommend a stay at Bushlands enough.

Quiet campground set alongside the River. Immaculate, clean, well equiped kitchen. They sell eggs, honey and pizza! Had a double cabin with very comfortable bed. Walked to the canyon and saw numerous wild horses, goats and turkeys. No TV, no wifi so great place to relax.

We arrived in a camper van without a reservation. Jo is very friendly, attentive & knowledgeable of the local area and history. The bathrooms & cookhouse are tidy. We walked the 6km return track to Fossil Canyon. It’s a lovely natural amphitheater when you arrive. Great campground for young families.

Hands down the best campground! Clean and tidy facilities, in a lovely oval shape with lots of trees for shade. You feel like you’re right in paradise, very few places so untouched and welcoming. Perfect for the kids!
We didn’t get to the pizza oven (next time) but did enjoy roasting marshmallows over the fire, swimming in the river, walking to fossil canyon and exploring the railway. Our 5 year old couldn’t believe his luck when we got to walk through a real railway tunnel (it’s not in use :)). Something for everyone, we got to turn our phones off and relax- Thanks guys! We will be back again soon :)
