Detailed Reviews
We had had the accommodation booked for some 10 months and were somewhat concerned when some TA reviews were not too good over the interim. We also noted the Real NZ were trying to sell the property, so we expected a somewhat run down venue when we arrived, but not a bit of it. We were met by the new owners who had just taken over and had been in charge for only one week! Hilton met us at the Stewart Island NZ offices and took us on a driven tour of the township so that we get our bearings and then up the hill to meet Cindy who couldn’t have been nicer. We had a guided tour of the property (as our room was not ready, we arrived at 0900!) and then dropped our bags and started our adventures on the Island. On our return, we were shown to our room which was in excellent condition and afforded gorgeous views of the bay. The next day we had a wonderful continental style breakfast with lots of options - delightful.
So in summary, the new Owners have hit the ground running and we wish both Cindy and Hilton all the very best for their new adventure. We would recommend the venue without hesitation, despite the up hill ‘climb’ to the lodge! (no worse than some of the bay walks and worth the effort for the view alone).

We had an amazing stay at Stewart Island Lodge and can’t recommend it highly enough! The views from our room were absolutely breathtaking – waking up to the serene scenery was an experience in itself.
The room was impeccably maintained, clean, and inviting - including the soaker bathtub (!) - making our stay incredibly comfortable. It’s clear the lodge is cared for with great attention to detail.
We were delighted to meet the new owners, Cindy and Hilton, who had taken over the lodge just 10 days before our visit. They’ve had a seamless start. Both were very attentive and friendly, going out of their way to ensure every guest felt welcome. Their thoughtful service included ferry pick-up and drop-off, which made our arrival and departure stress-free.
Breakfast was another highlight – the buffet offered a lot of variety and was prepared identically on both days, showing their remarkable attention to consistency and quality. The fresh, delicious offerings were the perfect way to start our island explorations.
Cindy and Hilton are doing a fantastic job, and we’ll definitely be back!

We stayed here for 2 nights on our anniversary holiday around South Island and a visit to Stewart Island. After landing we and another couple, were met in Oban by Hilton. He took us all for a short drive and he pointed out places of interest and where we could buy tickets or eat out. At the Lodge we met Cindy, both of them had taken over 10 days earlier, but we wouldn't have known. The lodge is great, a glorious sea view and our room was clean and spacious, it had both a shower and a separate bath. There was decking outside, through sliding doors, where we could sit and chill out. Breakfasts were continental and very filling. The lodge is up a hill but then so are most of the island roads. Both Cindy and Hilton are great, eager to please hosts. There are a few small snagging's for them to sort, once Hilton's tools arrive. We wish them all the best for the future and would recommend staying here.

So disappointed, payed almost $500 a night and expected at least a well kept accommodation. The place is up for sale and the owners have certainly not put any maintenance in the place for years. Everyone was amazed that they haven’t trimmed the bushes from the property so the views are not what are on in the photos. The windows have not been washed in years. The place is overrun with weeds, insects, mold in the bathroom. The caretaker is an overworked seasonal employee who is ready to be anywhere but on the island. The place is only staffed for a few hours a day and the after hours phone number is never answered. No WiFi. Only one key per room as explained you cannot be trusted with two keys, so if your partner goes on a 5 hour trek and you do something else, well bad luck. One of you just waits. Overall, better to book elsewhere for a lot less and just enjoy the fun vibe of Stewart.

The lodge is set up on the hill and really takes advantage of the views down across Half Moon Bay sitting on the deck really is an experience and worth the cost to stay here. You feel like you have the place to yourself as once breakfast is out of the way you are left to you own devices and can utilise the kitchen if you wish. The rooms are very well designed with the bed facing straight out onto the views. They also have a nifty little room for storing luggage and making tea which keeps it seperate from the bedroom and means you have more space to move around. The bathroom is at the back of the room and had a lovely big walk in shower with eco store products for sustainability, there was also a bth if you chose to have a soak. Sitting in the deck is the way to go no need to use the TV in the room as the views are the money shot. If you don’t like hills you could be perturbed as the way up is quite steep but manageable if you take your time. Once at the top the views more then make up for the walk up. If you are looking for amazing views and a place to relax while the kereru, Tui and Kaka fly around this is the place for you.

This hotel is somewhat dated. All entrances and windows of guest rooms have views of the ocean but all guests share the same deck so people are walking in front of your room so it’s a bit of a pain if you want to leave your blinds open. Continental breakfast is somewhat limited and fruit is not always of best quality. Property is for sale so maybe why they’ve done no recent updates. Very close to town and tracks. Clean.

This was my favourite hotel in New Zealand that we stayed in! The rooms in the lodge are very spacious, comfortable and well equipped with nice tea and coffee. The lodge is also a very short walk from the centre of the township. The staff are very helpful, with lots of suggestions for things to do whilst you’re visiting Stewart Island. They were also kind enough to help us with our bags when going to and from the ferry, as the lodge is up a short, but fairly steep hill. There are several bush walks and hikes you can do nearby and the view of the bay from your room is fantastic. I really can’t recommend staying here highly enough!

We have been in New Zealand for nearly three weeks and this has been our favourite place so far. We stayed for three nights (longer would be better!) and never tired of looking at the view down into Oban. The room was spacious and comfortable, the continental breakfast very good - either eaten in the dining room or out on the terrace. The lounge has a huge picture window with views down to Halfmoon Bay. Take-away fish and chips washed down with a bottle of wine, eaten at the table just outside our room to the accompaniment of Tui birdsong, was delightful. There is a washing machine with washing powder and dryer for guest use which was very useful. Thanks to Lisa for helping us sort out other Real Journeys bookings when we hastily had to rearrange because of the Milford Road problems. We did five experiences with Real Journeys (Stewart Island Lodge, the ferry, Kiwi Experience, Doubtful Sound overnight cruise, Te Anau glowworms), so it’s a good idea to book all through the web and take advantage of the multi-saver.
Stewart Island Lodge is a very special place, so don’t hesitate to go.

This was our first time to Stewart Island so we weren’t sure what to expect, especially the weather. With regard to the weather it couldn’t have been much better. There was the inevitable wind but apart from that it was fine and moderately warm. At the Lodge the outside seating was sheltered from the wind but still allowed an almost uninterrupted view of Oban and the bay. Our room was spacious and the ensuite had everything would expec with regard to toiletries etc. Breakfast was on a self service continental basis but all laid out ready to choose whatever one felt inclined to partake of. The communal dining area and the lounge area all had good views, there was a shuttle service from the ferry terminal to/from the lodge. The staff connected with the lodge all had the time to chat, were very courteous and welcoming.

We made a conscious decision to stay at Stewart Island Lodge despite the relatively high price and we are very glad we did . All the rooms have truly outstanding views looking out over Oban Bay . We could take in the tranquility , the coming and going of boats of all sizes and some amazing sunrises . The lodge is well appointed and very comfortable . Bedrooms are of a good size with an ensuite .Breakfasts in the central comfortable lounge were excellent . The Manager Lisa is a delightful person and her advice on various activities was spot on . She is a real asset to guests staying with her knowledge and attitude . Lisas influence also showed in the quality eco friendly items throughout the lodge . The loveliest place to stay on wonderful Stewart Island !!

No dogs allowed at all on that island. To protect the kiwi birds.
