In house made rhubarb compote with rhubarb and meringue ice cream, meringue, cream and a biscuit. We didn't have enough room for desert, but had to share this three ways as it looked too good to pass up!

Stayed a night before walking the Humpridge track. Great location, good facilities, and fast wifi as well. We were able to leave a bag in a locker while we walked the track (3days). When we returned they were very accommodating with letting us use the showers and kitchen to warm up before heading back home. Would definitely recommend.

We stayed here before and after the Humpridge Track, partly because there weren’t many other options in Tuatapere and we didn’t want to drive much before or after the walk. We were so glad we did - the superior room was very comfortable and clean, surrounded by garden and fruit trees. It was very quiet and we had a good sleep. We also saw amazing stars at night. Yes it’s a pain to have to use the shared bathrooms and toilets, but they were only a few steps away and were also very clean. So overall the quality of the accommodation is high.

The best part of the stay though, was the food. On both stays we opted to add dinner and breakfast, and had packed lunch for our walk. Breakfast was very hearty with home made muesli, yogurt and rhubarb compote, plus bacon, eggs and ciabatta, and juice and coffee. Certainly a feast! For dinners we had blue cod with apple crumble on the first night, and roast lamb and pav for the second. Definitely recommend adding meals to your booking, it’s worth it!

This was a perfect place to stay prior to walking the Humpridge Track. The hosts are incredibly friendly - warm, happy and welcoming. The evening meal was top class. We had blue cod which was cooked to perfection. The beds are comfortable with crisp white sheets, hot water bottles, if required, and everything is very clean. I would highly recommend this place. Loved it.

We stayed at Last Light en route to walk Humpridge Track. The hospitality at the lodge was ideal, accommodation was clean and comfortable. We had a lovely blue cod dinner, cooked breakfast and packed lunch - all very tasty and good value for money

We stayed here the night before and after walking the Hump Ridge Track. Last Light Lodge worked seamlessly and actually enhanced this fabulous walk.

Food was outstanding. Violaine and Craig have created an incredible offering, with an abundant garden supplying the kitchen they create generous delicious meals that were an absolute highlight of our holiday.

Rooms at the LLL are very well appointed - comfortable beds, quality linen, immaculately clean with big windows looking out on gardens and Birdlife. Shared bathrooms are modern, clean and convenient with plenty of hot water and great showers - so important post hike!

Finally, we couldn't fault the friendly service. Nothing was too much trouble. Great communication. Did I mention the packed lunches?? - don't miss them, or the breakfast! Really can't speak more highly of the Last Light Lodge.

A group of six of us stayed in the Last Light Lodge the nights before and after walking the Humpridge Track. We highly recommend this accommodation. The rooms are spotlessly clean. We stayed in the renovated rooms which had big comfy beds, heating and a sink unit with kettle etc. Bathrooms are shared. The restaurant was fabulous and the specialise garden to plate, with almost everything grown on site. The dinners and breakfasts were very well cooked and presented and extraordinarily tasty! We chose also to get the packed lunch which was excellent for the first day of the track. I kept the biscuit/cookie for Day Two, and wished I'd bought another one for Day Three they were so good.

Obviously there is not alot of choice when it comes to accommodation in Tuatapere but we book Last Light Lodge because it looked the best option. The room was clean and tidy but I thought somewhat overpriced at $140 when it didn't even have a private bathroom. Also TV dropped out constantly on the first day and there was no where to hang any clothes in your room or even put your bag on. Having a mirror in the rooms would also be a good touch

Response from Violaine Dumas, General Manager at Last Light Lodge
Responded 11 Apr 2021
Thank you for your review. We have never advertised private bathrooms and clearly state shared facilities. it is a remote place, seasonal work, high costs with lower occupancy, not like in Queenstown for example, the room rates reflect returns. Tv runs on wifi, we are limited by service, however optic fiber should be connected to the town this year. Also we are always trying to improve as it is a building from the 70s - the new deluxe rooms that you were in are from November 2020 - and we take notes of your remarks to make the room more comfortable.

Wow! What a find. I booked 2 nights at The Last Light Lodge, one either side of me tackling The Hump Ridge Track, down there in Tuatapere and I’m so pleased I did.
Craig and the team were friendly, engaging and welcoming, from the moment I checked in. The room was immaculately presented and super clean.
When I initially booked this and saw ‘shared (bathroom) facilities’ I must confess to baulking slightly. But the other good reviews and its proximity to the road leading to the start of The Hump Ridge Track, persuaded me to ‘look beyond’ my doubts about shared facilities. However I needn’t have worried, as the shared facilities were in pristine condition and light years beyond other such facilities I’ve previously used.
Meal wise on the first evening (due to a school leavers function in the main bar) was served outside alfresco style on the decking, to myself and a family of 5 who had just come off the track.
I opted for gourmet evening meals, breakfast and a packed lunch for Day one on the track. The evening meal on my first night consisted of eye fillet steak, cooked and presented to perfection along with an amazing selection of vegetables from their own gardens, followed by a beautiful meringue desert.
My second nights meal, blue cod, which was amazing and served with an incredibly delicious tangy sauce to accompany it, followed by a lush crème brûlée.
You cannot fault The Last Light Lodge and it is definitely the best placed accommodation for the Hump Ridge Track and surrounding countryside. I will definitely be back.

I stayed at this lovely hotel just after Christmas following a recommendation from the Humpridge track management team.
The owner / operator is a fully qualified chef and this was obvious in both the quality of lunch and dinner. They went out of their way to make me welcome even to the point of giving me one of their children’s tooth brushes which I needed for the three day Humpridge track in south east Fiordland.
Despite being in a remote location the quality of the showers and rooms was exemplary.

The Lodge is classified as “budget” and I’m writing this review in this context. We stayed a night before entering the Humpridge track. The evening meal of beef fillet accompanied by large plate of fresh vegetables was tasty and just what we needed before a strenuous day of exercise. The rooms were tidy and clean. The bathrooms are communal but spotless. The couple running the place were friendly and clearly work tirelessly to get the place clean. We opted for the packed lunch for the first day of the walk. Sandwich was delicious and hit the spot in the tack before we hit “the hill” section. In the context of “budget” the Lodge deserves a 5 star.
