Detailed Reviews
Rob and his wife, Lena, run Windhover Suites with a relaxed, welcoming attitude and a wonderful attention to detail. This is the perfect place for the traveler who prefers to be away from town but within a short drive of great restaurants and multiple land and water activities. The rooms are generously sized and sit perched on a hillside; in one direction there is an infinity pool overlooking a lovely pond and in the other you see olive trees and a vineyard, with a long ocean view in the distance. If you choose the breakfast option, Rob will stock your mini-kitchen with substantial goodies the night before so you can eat as early or late as you prefer! Rob also makes an amazing charcuterie platter if you prefer to stay around in the evening. My husband and I both had a massage with Lena in their small building right above the beach. Don’t miss this! Lena is a very highly skilled and intuitive therapist, and we both felt restored after several weeks of travel. We loved our stay and were so glad we had booked 3 nights.

We really loved the location of Windhover Estate as it offers absolutely stunning views of the bay, especially from the infinity pool! It is such an amazing experience to swim in the heated pool with the blue sea, olive trees and the vineyard in front of you. The outdoor facilities invite you to relax there with a glass of wine and some snacks. Thanks very much to Rob who was so helpful in giving us very good hints for memorable locations and activities nearby. He was very fast and flexible in accomodating our extraordinary wishes. The connections to road network are really good and parking was very easy, even with a big car.

My family and I stayed in the '2 bedroom vineyard suite' for 3 nights. Of the seven places we stayed during our South Island adventure, this was by far our favorite accommodation. We felt so lucky to stay there!
The pool was breathtaking and we swam every day :)
Although we used this place as our launch pad to Kayak and hike in the Abel Tasman National Park, we also gave ourselves a full day to chill and relax at the vineyard, making the most of this gorgeous place and it's the stunning setting.
We would highly recommend this place and hope to return some day.
Thank you to the General Manager, Mathias, for being so helpful and hospitable.

Loved staying at this lovely retreat!
Our 2 bedroom suite was very well appointed, spacious and comfortable.
The owners were gracious hosts and bent over backwards to make us feel welcome and accommodate our needs. The views are gorgeous, the pool was heated and very inviting, as was the hot tub. It felt as though we were staying in someone’s home. Highly recommend staying here.

This feels like such a hidden gem on a wonderful slice of paradise. The property is beautiful and Rob made us feel so welcome right from the start. The infinity pool was so peaceful during the day; the hot tub/sauna offered a great end to the day. We would highly recommend both Windover and the Waters Inn (sister property) over and over again! Wish we were staying here longer. Great access to Abel Tasman + Mapua too.

We went to New Zealand for our honeymoon - windover suites has been the best hotel for our stay. The view from the room is breathtaking - window in front of the infinity pool finishing on the sea. We kept the windows open during the night to see the sunrise on the sea. During the sunset we enjoyed a drink in the amazing garden and walk to the private beach. The hotel manager Rob has been really kind and ensured we had everything we needed. We really recommend to everybody this little paradise.

My husband and I stayed for two nights in the Seaview-Poolside suite. It was perfect for the two of us, and with the infinity pool right outside our door (and no security gate between the two) AND only one other suite briefly occupied, we felt like we'd hit the accommodation jackpot. The view is breathtaking (we enjoyed our exploring of the Nelson area but absolutely loved getting back to Windhover) and the pool, spa and sauna were an exceptional treat.
Our hosts Francesco and Elena were very helpful recommending places to dine (and even booked our table at The Apple Shed - go when the tide is in for gorgeous photos!) and intentionally kept their presence to a minimum so we could enjoy our small slice of heaven in solitude.
We would definitely recommend to anyone wanting a getaway, a wedding location, or a special treat. We will definitely be coming back.

Great studio unit and good value for money. Use of hot tub and outdoor fire was fantastic. Had the place to ourselves and enjoyed the under floor heating in the middle of winter. Stunning view and not far from Mapua which is well worth a visit.

We stayed in guest suite and court yard cottage at Windhover Estate main house. Perfect for Janet and I, and our teenage daughter.
The Waters suites are more for couples.
Both are hosted by Claire and Phil who are wonderful, though note there is no catering at the Windhover house, Vs breakfast provided at The Waters suites.
You can rent the whole house at Windhover or parts thereof like we did, depending on your family numbers.
The house is beautiful, but the views are spectacularly expansive over Tasman Bay, and up the Tasman coast to where we were going to be trekking following our Christmas break at Windhover.
No matter if renting all or part of Windhover estate you get full use of the pool (big enough for laps), spa, sauna, BBQ etc. Morning swims with the views from the infinity edge pool were a treat.
We had a rental car for the 30min or so trips to Nelson or much less to Motueka for restaurants and supplies.
There are good cafes and restaurants also a 5-10min drive away.
Unless you really want to be in a town, I thought this was ideally positioned as a gateway to the Tasman district.
For a family and friends luxury self catering stay it would be very hard to find better in the region.

Response from Claire G, Manager at Windhover Suites
Responded 13 Feb 2018
Hello and thank you for your very positive review of The Windhover Lodging, part of the Windhover Estate. We are thrilled that this arrangement suited you and your family. Yes it is self catering but with a kitchenette and BBQ provided it is well catered for. We agree the views are spectacular. It is a perfect location to explore the Abel Tasman National Park but close enough to the cafe and restaurants of Mapua and Motueka if needed.

We stayed 3 days at the Windhover Suite which is the villa on the Waters estate. THE Waters had 3 beautiful cottage suites that were both contemporary and well appointed at a luxury level. At the Windhover, we rented two suites and had our own 70 foot infinite pool, spa and hot tub. The suites had breathtaking views across the whole Kina Peninsula. The estate and the Waters is set at the top of a hill in an olive orchard and has extended private beaches that one can walk on for hours without seeing a soul. The tide goes extremely far out leaving warm tidal pools and beautiful shells to collect. Claire, the hostess was very warm and gracious and helped us with booking reservations for our hiking outing at Able Tasman. Ruby Beach is nearby( 10 minute drive) and has 2 terrific restaurants on the wharf and a brewery. This is in Marlbourgh and thus there are several local wineries. Overall this is our 5th trip exploring New Zealand and I think this is now at the top of my essential stay list. We have booked again for next year. The weather in this area is fairly dry compared to further down the West Coast and it is not far from Nelson where you can pick up groceries and supplies in route. This is an amazing experience. My only advise is to get more comfortable mattresses and down pillows for this level of luxury as well as a larger television.
