Detailed Reviews
La Costa de Papito is true paradise. You stay in private bungalows set amongst gorgeous jungle gardens, made of beautiful native wood and each with their own porch and hammock for relaxing. Each feels secluded, but very safe and secure. Across the street is one of the best beaches on the coast, with surfing lessons, volleyball games, and beautiful scenery, all close to the charming town of Puerto Viejo. The main hotel restaurant serves up an outstanding complementary breakfast every morning, with delicious meals and often live music to offer at night. We had fun playing pool by the bar and drinking the super tasty pina coladas! We can't say enough good things about the wonderful staff. It is a family-run business and it shows. The people are so kind, dedicated, and really love what they do. And how could they not? It is a wonderful place to be!

We stayed for ten days and we delighted with our cabin and service. The team are always happy to help and make you feel very very welcome. Our Cabin was delightful and I’m seriously missing my hammock. Erica’s breakfasts were lovely. The beach is very close and guarded by professional lifeguards which is great as the sea is wonderful but fierce. Only one bit of feedback is that evening meals could be more inventive and using local products.

We loved our 2 days stay in La Casa de Papito. The bungalow had everything that we needed to feel comfy: nice bathroom, comfy beds with mosquito nests, little but spacious fridge, power outlets next to the beds, nice table and hammock outside to hang out. The bungalows feel very private as they are not too close to each other, the grounds are beautiful with lush plants all around - you feel like you are in the middle od the jungle. The birds will wake you up early in the morning, so if you mind, use earplugs.
The location is great, not very far from Puerto Viejo (3,000.00 crc/5 usd by tuktuk to get to the center), just across the road from Cocles Beach and a few great places to eat are just few minutes away by walking.
Would totally reccommend this place!

These are cute little bungalows. There is a nice wood carved table and hammock on the porch. Each bed has a mosquito net although the whole bungalow does have screens. However, there are cracks where mosquitoes and other bugs can easily get in although it wasn't a huge problem. We were grateful that they gave us a bungalow large enough for 6 people when there were only 4 of us. There was no fridge or microwave or tv. They gave us just 1 complimentary bottle of water in the room. The bungalow was not in great shape. The toilet was constantly leaking all over the floor, causing the entire bath rug to become saturated. The sink faucet only has one temperature and was leaking. The shower was good, however. There was a soap dispenser for the sink and an unknown soap dispenser for the shower that smelled like coconut. I'm not sure if it was shampoo or body wash, so we just used it for both. Also, it didn't really feel clean. The floor felt grimy when we first walked in so I would recommend flip flops to wear the entire time you are inside. In addition, the bedsheets are all gray so you can't really tell if they are dirty or not. The really horrible thing about the bungalows was that there was no AC. In a place with 100% humidity just about all the time, it was near unbearable. There are strong fans over each bed, but that just made me super sore the next morning. Breakfast was decent, but you had to preorder the day before and tell them what time you are going to breakfast as well which is not great when you want to relax and take things as they come on vacation. The breakfast is just one plate of whatever you order. It was fairly hearty but not enough for a teenage boy. It is served with different juices which were delicious. They do provide beach towels, but there was an issue when we could not get clean beach towels because they weren't ready yet. So just make sure you always have clean beach towels on hand. To get ice, you have to ask at reception, and they just gave us one glass. They did have a water dispenser in the lobby although it wasn't refrigerated. Wifi was ok. Sometimes it was really good and others, you had to go near the reception desk. I think if you prepare yourself for glamping, you'll be fine. Otherwise, find somewhere else.

We had two nights booked for a bungalow and we knew going in that it would be more rustic lodging than other destinations, since Puerto Viejo is a more laid-back vibe. However, our bungalow was nothing like the pictures, so do not expect your bungalow to look anything like the pictures. When we went to take showers the first night, the hot water did not work. So I went to the front desk and asked for someone to help. The young lady at the desk said that he would stop by in 5 minutes. When 45 minutes went by and it started to get later, I stopped by and told them that he still had not come, she went in the back and said loudly that I was crying about not having hot water.
First of all, I did not cry so I do not appreciate her snarky attitude. Secondly, hot water is not a big request when you are paying $130 a night for a bungalow. Her comment was unprofessional and unnecessary. The following day, friendly workers tried to fix the water all day but it was clear to use that this was an existing problem that was not able to be repaired. They had no other bungalows available, so we packed up our things and left early for the next leg of our trip. When we asked to refund the second night, we were told it was not possible.

Recently visted Puerto Viejo and stayed here in a cute cabana with covered porch with hammock and lounge chairs. Just had put in new queen mattresses. Very comfortable. Loved the symphony of the frogs at night and could here the ocean just across the street. Great breakfast buffet with made to order eggs. Ate dinner there one night which was very good also. They also had music another night which was very nice. Everyone was very friendly. We enjoyed the breakfast buddies (young cats who visited for some free handouts). The cabanas had 3 beds so nice for families or group of friends. Close to town. Had bikes if would like to use. Beach across the street. Beach towels and chairs available.

Our accommodation was very comfortable and the were beds for 6 in 2 bedrooms. The bathroom was separate. There was a hawk sitting in a tree 5 metres away when we arrived and agoutis chasing each other round the grounds.
On arrival the owner was preparing for Superbowl night that was going to be packed but we were warmly invited along. Minerva on customer service was brilliant throughout our stay. You can avoid walking along the road into town by following a path through the trees just back from the beach.

Wonderful cabins, awesome decks, pretty setting. No AC in cabins (not a complaint just an observation) but open windows, fully screened, provide nice airflow and gives it a pleasant airy outdoor feeling. In addition numerous fans blow it around nicely. It was a little warm from sundown to 8-9 o’clock but quite comfortable after that. The hotel is just across the street from a great beach, at a bar/restaurant. Didn’t eat there went over one night but they don’t serve dinner till 8:30. We did have some great Pina Coladas there! The restaurant at Papito is awesome. Had 2 great meals there. The pumpkin soup and bruscetta are out of this world! If you fancy wildlife throw couple of mango peals out in front of you deck and enjoy a visit from an Agouti.

Great time, staff were great and very attentive to my needs after my luggage was delayed upon arrival. I caught a bug for about 12 hours and the front desk was offering ways to help.
Marva and the younger fellow at the front desk are excellent at suppling information and always offer a smile and a chat.
Overall, I highly reccomend Hotel La Costa de Papito

Our family stayed for two weeks over Christmas and New Year's and the whole vacation was fabulous. Our one year old grandchild visited Puerto Viejo and Costa de Papito for the first time. We all had a blast! The staff was so caring and attentive that we felt totally at home. And of course Surf Point is one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. I recommend this resort wholeheartedly.

Chandler, Arizona, United States66 contributions24 helpful votesHow is the weather in mid-late November? I'm aware the hotel in on the Carribean side of the country, but most travel sites state the rainy season is May - November.
While it rains everywhere in Costa Rica in Sept, October ,November on the Caribbean side there are almost always sunny days at that time of year.
To be honest the first 15 days of September this year were very strange in that we got quite a bit of rain??
While it is usually raining everywhere else in Costa Rica in September and October on the Caribbean coast the sun is shinning.
Definitely a beach destination but there were many excursions where you could gt taken into the mountains for a day trip.
