Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We loved our stay at Jimmy’s cabins. Simple, relaxing an beautiful. There are cabins, which are comfortable and equipped with simple cooking facilities and a house with rooms for budget travellers. Plenty of views, starlit baths, walks and total relaxation.

This house was marketed by Booking.com as 'Freestone Original Farmhouse' it is an old house that has not seen any maintenance or upgrade work in many years. We were appalled when we arrived it is in overgrown unkempt grounds and looks just as bad on the inside. We rented the whole house for ourselves and found that apart from making the beds there was no other preparation to make the house habitable. As you can see from the photos they hadn't even bothered to empty the fridge or wardrobes. We didn't stay as it was way too dirty and primitive and found a fantastic place just 4 km away for the same money, so they can't even claim to be cheap. The claim to have laundry facilities actually means something in a shed fifty yards away which we didn't look at. No air conditioning or fly screens so you will either cook or be bitten by mosquitoes. We went back to Booking.com for help in getting a refund, they asked the owner who refused to refund anything so Booking.com offered NZ$100 out of the more than 800 we paid, and that seems to be the end of their responsibility as they see it. So be warned.

We stayed in the main house rather than the lodges and had the ensuite bedroom. The house was built by the owner as his dream home and the bedroom we had was obviously his, as the view is amazing. It's a big room with decent bathroom, opening up into a large shared lounge and kitchen area. Bring your own milk and real coffee if you dont like instant and dont expect the Ritz. It is slightly tired and the drive up is primitive, but adds to the adventure.

We have stayed for a few days and I have quite mixed feelings. Overall the place was quite big and quiet but it is old and outdated that need maintenance, care and investment which is not there. Disadvantages no wi fi (to get it you need to climb to the office up to the hill) no mosquito screen on windows so you cannot open the window and very old soft mattresses with inconvenient springs pop up feeling. We got spiders and mosquitoes when we opened windows for a couple of minutes. The owner never changes linen and towels. Also, it is very hard to get there as the place is no lit in the night and situated in very bad gravel uphill road.

We just drove up the gravel road and asked if they had any free spaces for the night, it was getting a little late. 10 minutes after we were sorted in a twin room at a very affordable price. The owners are super friendly and happy to answer any questions about activities in the area. Cooking and toilet/shower facilities were clean and tidy. For 30 dollars a tub you can book a heated hot tub with a view, we didn't try it out but it looked really cool!

I stayed at the Freestone Backpackers last night. Turns out not only did I have the dorm cabin (4 beds) to myself, I had the whole lodge to myself - the only customer! The service from Jaclyn & Warren was great. They greeted me with a smile, made sure there was plenty of firewood and gave me access to their house to use the internet and charge my laptop (no power in the cabins, which is a good thing!) I had a really cosy night to myself with the fireplace running. The cabin was fully equipped with a gas hob and cooking facilities, which I didn't require as I had had dinner. It was a perfect escape, the night was dead quiet and I had an amazing night's sleep. Would definitely recommend and would stay again if in the area. Anthony

Awesome place just a few kilometers away from Manapouri with wonderful views of the lake and the mountains. I spent 3 nights in a cottage, which was also equipped with a small kitchen. The log fire ensured that even at cold evenings the cottage was snug and warm. Bathroom facilities were in a separate cottage nearby. In clear nights, it is a perfect place for watching stars and on the verandah, the beautiful surroundings can be enjoyed. The owners, Warren and Jaclyn, are very hospitable and friendly and provided us with helpful local knowledge on walks in the area. This is a perfect place to unwind and to enjoy the beauty of Fjordland’s nature. I would definitely be back if I am in Fjordland again!
