It's oh so nice to go travelling

The lyrics of this song tell of wonderful places, London Paris Rome, the camel route to Iraq! But then - it's oh so very nice to come home. After more than three decades of visits that's what we think of the Skiathos Palace, a home from home without the headaches of owning one.

When you are sitting in your own home reading this review take a moment to look around. Do you see that hedge you've been meaning to cut, or the bit of fading paint or peeling wallpaper or dust on the TV cabinet? Probably and yet probably not because the love of your home goes deeper than superficial niceties; you are content, not necessarily happy but content, you know the difference.

When you are trying to make a holiday destination decision keep those two things foremost in your mind. Are you looking for that elusive ephemeral emotion called happiness if so the Skiathos Palace may not be for you. Why do I say this? Well because there maybe too many obstacles in the way of you feeling happy.

For example the location, on a hill at the furthermost point from the main town. Yes, it's a hindrance but in exchange you have the most spectacular views of any Hotel and courtesy buses to take you up and down to the beaches or into town but you may find it unacceptable not to have lifts (elevators), as a result you may be unhappy?

I read people comment on having the same menu items every morning for breakfast but never state what else they would like? Incidentally the Ritz in London has the same breakfast choices each day for €70! Not far off what you paid each night for the Skiathos Palace Hotel, but you may not recognise what incredible value for money this is and be unhappy.

In summer the islands population rise from 6000 by a factor of 20! This can place pressure on the speed of service but if you also find this unacceptable in your four star idyll, it may make you unhappy. And so it goes on.

Enough already!!
Let's speak to the seekers of contentment, the Lotus Eaters. They already understand Socrates when he said, " He who is not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have". This explains why the Palace has such a huge percentage of people who, like us, come back year after year. We appreciate we are in an ancient, civilised culture with different views, opinions and values and the words "right away" are just words and not a call to action. Above all the Contenters appreciate the people who work there and greet them year after year by name and as long lost friends, ie for the friends that they truly are. But we Contenters make it a priority to know their names so let's hope you follow our example and become a Contenter and recognise that unless you are a restaurant or hotel critic the purpose of your holiday isn't to seek happiness from finding faults but find contentment for a few precious weeks. Yammas.

We have just come back from a two week stay at the Skiathos Palace Hotel.
The hotel is in a beautiful location by one of the best beaches of Skiathos, Kukunaries. The hotel has a great terrace with a big, clean, inviting swimming pool, plenty of sun beds and chairs to enjoy the glorious sunshine. María Elena is the pool lifeguard, she is a lovely person, does a fantastic job of keeping the pool clean and safe for everyone. She is also very knowledgeable of the island and I enjoyed many conversations with her. On the same terrace you find the restaurants, a buffet, but due to the current situation, to be more hygienic, you get served your choices instead of helping yourself. An a la Carte with a good menu and a pool bar which also serves a variety of food and snacks.
We had breakfast included in our package. The breakfast service was well organised and there was a nice choice with good portions. The tables were all set up outside at a safe distance from one another, very pleasant.
The staff are friendly and helpful, never had to wait long for anything.
Our room was lovely, modern, with plenty of cupboard space. We had an executive twin room with a large balcony. It had a really nice bathroom with a walk in shower, a nice modern sink. The balcony had two sun beds, a table and four chairs. The room was cleaned every day, towels changed every day and we were given two bottles of water everyday too, it had a mini bar. The room also had two pocket sized bottles of hand sanitiser for our use.
You can collect a pool towel from the shop and keep it throughout your stay or take it back every day and get a fresh one. The hotel also has a manned children’s play area. Branka looks after it. She is a lovely, friendly person and all the children love her. A great listener too when there aren’t any children in the play area.
All the staff wore face masks, all the public spaces were very clean and spacious. The cutlery was always individually sealed wrapped. It felt safe.
The reception team were really helpful, professional, knowledgeable and friendly, nothing was any trouble.
You can, if you want to, hire a car at the hotel with the company Aegean without the need to go into town to do it, although there are many car rental companies in town if you want More of a choice.
The hotel itself has a free mini bus which goes into Skiathos town three times a day, you need to let reception know if you want to use it as there a limited spaces.
There is a local bus stop just outside the hotel, it cost 2€ and they run every half an hour during the season.
We really enjoyed our stay.

Skiathos Palace a massive hotel with friendly stuff that will make you feel comfortable from the time you Check in till the time you Check Out.
We had a quite difficult road trip due to COVID-19 till we arrived at the Hotel.

# Check in
Checked really fast, the lady at the reception was lovely & gave us couple of information about the island and places to visit.
After Check in we have been helped with our luggage to the room.

# Room || Deluxe Room with Sea View
It's literally having the picture of the website in front of you.
The Room was pretty good & every day clean (as the maid was cleaning the room everyday)
Sea View was perfect you can sit in the Balcony for hours enjoying your coffee.

# Breakfst
Small Menu with pretty decent options for you to choose (eggs, breads, cheese, omelette, coffee, tea, juice etc.)

# Pool Area
One of the best places to hang out with friends or your family.
The view from the pool area is also very good, it has couple of olliander trees which enrich the whole scenery & something that I really enjoyed seeing was the sunset.

# Check Out
Pretty fast & Smooth we got our bill, payed it and we were done.

Overall the hotel is gorgeous, recently renovated and it overlooks the famous beach koukounaries which is an experience of its own.
All staff members ensured that our needs were met & they were very friendly.
All foods (that we tried) were high quality.
Even we were living during the COVID-19 period we felt very safe since all the staff was respecting the pandemic measurements.
The only problem is that it’s up the hill so it requires some effort to get there from the beach. Luckily they offer mini shuttles that can take you back & forth all day.
Definitely recommend the Skiathos Palace Hotel even during the COVID-19 period.

Thank you Skiathos Palace Hotel see you next year

Whilst I completely understand there is a variance in the star ratings in greece compared to other countries, this place is unfortunately not a 4* even by greek standards.

The initial room we were given looked nothing like the photos on the Jet2 website, it was in serious need of an update, beds were singles and they were rock hard, room was dirty there was mould etc - turns out on arrival we were actually given the wrong room and only after speaking to the Jet2 representative we were moved (those rooms were more along the lines of a 4* hotel), which we were grateful for but nether the less it shouldn't have happened.

Breakfast was horrendous as you'll probably see from other reviews, the bacon was like cold thin ham and the eggs were swimming in juice, which says to me they weren't in fact fresh more along the lines of powdered - whilst I understand covid is having an impact there's still no excuse for such a poor show. We just resorted to going to the local supermarket and having breakfast on occasions at augusta locally.

The bar area/pool is lovely when you can get a towel to put on a bed, as most of the time they were out shortly after opening up.

Most of the barstaff and waiters were extremely rude, several couples commented on this - having seen first hand one of the older barstaff muttering swearwords under his breath when guests ordered more than just a bottle of beer. Everything was an effort for them, there was only one young chap, who to his credit was fantastic.

Views are spectacular but other than that I wouldn't be staying here again. Really not sure how people are rating this hotel so high as the vast majority of staff were rude, rooms were poor until you kicked up a fuss and the food was rubbish...

We found a good deal less than a week before we left, we saw the review score (which has since gone down) and thought it looked very good value.

Really nice view from the hotel of the surrounding areas.
Air conditioning in the rooms (albeit pretty weak, even on full power)
Relatively cheap
The nearby beach has free towels from the hotel and can charge drinks to the room so you don't need to bring a wallet or purse.

Good sized pool with a nice deep end to swim and cool down in.

Both positive and negative: Good selections available for buffet breakfast, omelettes made to order but eggs put out on a tray and a lot of the hot food were warm/cold. (A pet peeve of mine, causing us to pay for breakfast in a local bar) but as far as breakfast buffets go, it was ok.

The room was dirty when we arrived and when we complained the cleaner that came to clean it failed to clean all 3 of the things we complained about (there was actually 4th we didnt mention because of her attitude). One of which was simply wiping toothpaste spray off the bathroom mirror. She was so rude my pregnant girlfriend cried. This really angered me and got our holiday off to a very bad start.

The walk up the hill and stairs twice a day is a bit of a slog, especially in the heat. A golf buggy may be a welcome addition to help with this. (The price we pay for a good view)

The fridge in our room wasn't working for a few days.

One of the staff near the pool took down an umbrella we were using while there were several others not being used he could have done first, forcing us to move from our loungers.

Very few plug sockets in the room.

WiFi was unstable and very frustrating when trying to stream movies or TV shows.

Overall we enjoyed our time in Skiathos, especially at the agustera bar and several of the local restaurants, all of which had good food.

This hotel has a great location but lots of work to do to bring it up to the expected standard and training staff to be professional, polite and considerate.

If you are getting the cheaper rooms be prepared for very basic rooms that may not be cleaned to a high standard.

We would return to Skiathos but not to this hotel.

My fault entirely .... we chose Skiathos because it is renowned for its hiking routes and as we planned to spend most of our days out of the hotel and just really use it as a base for sleeping, I thought it would suffice. The receptionist told us she had upgraded us to a sea view room as all promo rooms faced the mountain. The room was awful. Dirty skirting boards, two single beds pushed together and extremely uncomfortable and the balcony overlooked the dirt round the edge of the hotel side with a limited view of the bay. The plug didn’t fit in the plug hole so couldn’t have a bath and the bathroom flooded on the first night with water seeping all over it from the drains, but as I say, my fault entirely even though I would expect better for a 5* hotel. The hotel itself is set in the hillside and has tremendous views. The pool area was large and on the roof, again with magnificent views overlooking the bay. There are so many beaches to explore and The Port is definitely worth a visit. We made use of the bus service that stops opposite the hotel (stop 22) and for 2 euros each, takes you all the way back to The Port. Watching the planes come in or take off is a must and there are some exceptionally good restaurants on the road up to the end of the runway. We ate at the hotel just once, poached salmon, mushrooms and tomatoes for a main course was enough to put us off from eating there again and it certainly wasn’t cheap. Breakfast was ok and once we sussed out the best area to sit (in the middle) and look at what others were ordering it was acceptable. I had fresh melon and Greek yoghurt every day but you have to ask for the melon. They don’t offer it to you. They really are just making the best out of the bad situation. The waiting staff were great but I have to agree that the bar staff were ignorant and never smiled. I said good morning to them most days and never got a reply. We just stopped tipping them by the third day. Towels had run out by 10am on 2 days we were there and had to wait half an hour for a restock and we had a particularly bad service at breakfast one morning which I reported to our TUI rep via the app and when we got back later that evening, a bottle of wine and a massive bowl of fruit were brought to the door as a gesture of goodwill. The beaches across the road are amazing and it’s well worth a walk to Eleni beach. Turn right at the bottom of the driveway and head down the little path towards Koukounaries Beach and you come to a road that cuts directly up to the restaurants and saves you walking round the busy dim lit road. Big Bad Wolf was very good. We had an amazing time and will definitely return to Skiathos but not sure we would return here. The highlight of our holiday had to be The Prince of Qatar’s $300m super yacht moored across the road.

The hotel itself is lovely, great views over the bay and the beach itself is fabulous.
The outside eating/bar area is charming, traditional and clean.
We had a superb room, freshly decorated with great amenities, nicely furnished balcony.
The pool area was lovely, plenty of beds and the very pleasant Marielena on hand.

We were on a B&B basis and boy were we pleased with that decision!
The breakfast service was horrendous and the guy who appeared to be in charge was totally incompetent, no direction given to staff, no perception of what was happening around him he just kept coming out with food we hadn't ordered and then passing it on to other bewildered diners.
We witnessed several people just get up and leave out of sheer frustration.
We had to change our mindset and just sit back and enjoy the pantomime whilst hoping at least to get a hot cup of coffee.
We had one evening meal in the hotel and that was awful, again waiting staff abrupt and rude with the exception of Fanis who was doing his utmost to put things right.
Yes, the Covid situation was having some impact but shouldn't affect the staff standards.

The nearby restaurants were nice but proved difficult to get to at night time as it was pitch black and to get a taxi it had to come from Skiathos town so charged accordingly, around E16 euros.
We found it easier to either get the free hotel bus or local bus (2 Euros) into town where there was a great choice of restaurants.

No complaints about reception staff and cleaners as everywhere was absolutely spotless,

We had booked this hotel as it advertised a tennis court but it was being used for storage and upon asking were we just told it's not available. Totally unacceptable!

Loved Skiathos and we are planning to go again next year but not to this hotel.

Arrived Saturday 12th September with a friend who was a first timer to Skiathos. I usually stay self catering but booked a second holiday for September in a hotel for a bit of luxury. The Skiathos Palace is set on a hill near Maratha Beach and with extensive views over the bay of Koukounaries. The approach is via a very steep windy drive. Towards the top there can be found 2 carparks for your use. Reaching the large double glazed doors which take you into the open reception area. Check in was easy with a free upgrade being offered with a Seaview. We were escorted to our room which could not have been any further from reception. After walking along 2/3 very long corridors, the room was, however, nice and spacious with a roomy bathroom. The Swimming pool area and bar are very well kept with exceptional views over the sea and sunsets probably the best viewed on the Island. The downfall for this hotel is the steps. Everywhere you go there are steps and after a few days it became a dread to leave the hotel because of this. There are no immediate outside restaurants, supermarkets etc and unless you are wanting to stay in the Hotel grounds you would need to be prepared for a sturdy walk or use the local bus or taxis. Cleanliness in the communal areas was very good but the hotel let's itself down with the cleaning of the rooms. The balcony was not clean when we arrived and remained in the same state the whole week. Though beds were made daily, it soon became apparent the bathroom was not properly cleaned. Rather disappointing was also the attitude of some of the staff at mealtimes and serving from the bar. Rolling of eyes not very professional. Would I stay here again, no. Beautiful setting and views but too many steps.

Just come back from a week at this hotel, to which we have been previously. Nice to read before we travelled that had received the appropriate certifications on Covid measures. The staff were friendly and room was certified as Covid cleaned. albeit starting to look a little bit tired and need of a refresh. Meals were in the open air by the pool because the weather permitted that, so it felt safe eating there also. Sunbeds were appropriately spaced apart both by the pool and on the beach below. Service was very good. Airport experience at Birmingham and flight/transport with Jet2 in resort also felt very safe.

This Hotel is beautiful, the smell of pine is gorgeous, reception and grounds very clean, pool area and bar very pretty, lifeguard lady was very friendly and attentive to a little girl in the pool, stunning view of the beach, comfy sunbeds, it is situated on a mountain side with ALOT of stairs, we took that as a positive towards our daily step count.

The beach bar was expensive, 8 euros for a cup of tea, and the staff didn't seem to want to be there, could do with a happy hour during the day, the day music was questionable, bit depressing.

The beach is beautiful, with something for everyone, watersports, snack bar, shady pine area, and a friendly Swan thrown in for good measure, the sea actually looks like it has glitter in it, it's about a 10 minute walk downhill from the hotel, walking back up is hard but good exercise, there are actually 2 beaches to choose from, with one being smaller than the other.

We arrived and booked in, the receptionist was polite but hard to understand with a mask on, he told us we had been upgraded to a sea view room (we had booked a mountain view room) we were very excited as a young man took our cases and lead us to our room.

The room.... Well it was nice, a little worn, it looked like they had tried to update it but not quite succeeded, we did have a sea view but it was a side view, but it was OK, it looked clean enough, there were no drink making facilities in the room due to covid, the safe was free as was the air con, but it was a little lack lustre, if the weather was any hotter it wouldn't have sufficed, we weren't disappointed but would have like a nicer room, it was nice and quiet however, not sure if we upset housekeeping but we didn't have any towels replaced, and had none on the last day. Plug sockets were an issue, not enough and situated wrongly.

You can walk down the hill to restaurants and the supermarket, we loved Augustus, a little bar we found with Maverick the dog, they were very friendly.

The restaurant in the hotel is nice, not amazing but nice, we had the best meals down the hill, breakfast was a good choice.

If I were to stay at this hotel again I would pay for a nicer room.

We had a lovely time, we would recommend.
