The hotel has been closed for refurbishment from April 2024 to early December.
The rooms are now refreshed and comfortable.
For those who subscribe to a Gourmet Pass costing a few hundred pounds to benefit from tasting menus in the restaurants rather than eating in the buffet you may be a little disappointed. The El Laurel remains exceptional for cuisine and service and its close neighbour the Trattoria is also a good choice for dining. However, Tasca Fandango offers good service but the menu disappoints. We found the Gara appalling. The menu was miserable and the service deplorable. We waited 45 minutes for an uninspiring first course and when the second course had not arrived after waiting a further 30 minutes we walked out in disgust.
Bungalow rooms and beautifully kept gardens. The area is quiet and a place to relax. Patios are larger than balconies, so the choice is whether you want a bit of space or sea view. Rooms are dated and need a bit of modernisation. The floors are tiled, so you may want to pack some cheap bathroom slippers.
Rooms near the pool with patios can be quite dark as they are sheltered by the raised pool area and trees. I would personally, avoid these (103 to 127), if you prefer a bit of natural light coming into your room. This is the case during the winter months.
Breakfast and buffet dinner have plenty of choice, but dishes can be lukewarm. It was nice to see for breakfast and dinner the outside area near the main buffet restaurant was open for alfresco dinning, as the normal outside terrace can get quite busy.
Would like to see the kettle and safe free of charge in all room types, rather than having to pay extra.
For those arriving by Fred Olsen Benchi Express, who are unable to check-in until they get to reception (like me as I came from VGR), a free shuttle bus would be a nice touch. Otherwise, if you are fit and able, it's either a stroll to Club Laurel to find a member of staff to allow you to use the lift, or a walk up the steps at the other end of town.
Noticed the reading room has moved (last year it was closed) and has plenty of books.
I didn’t use the main pool this year, so cannot comment. I prefer the sea. Walk 45 minutes and you have a beach virtually to yourself.
The service at the hotel was top notch, and the staff were so sweet and service-minded.
Large selection in the restaurant. Some individual dishes were like standard dishes, but otherwise every day there was a new selection/theme for the food - nice variety.
Daily cleaning of the rooms and change of towels - if this is desired.
Together with the key card for the room, you are given a card which gives you the opportunity to borrow a fresh towel for the pool.
Overall, we had expected a bit more from the hotel. We were accommodated in a slightly older bungalow, with a shower in the bathtub.
It was great that you could have breakfast and dinner in the buffet restaurant in the garden or at the tables of the pool bar. We had a lovely time there in December. The food was plentiful, but of average quality. The side dishes in particular, boiled vegetables, Canarian potatoes and stews were lukewarm at best. The show cooking was also cooked in advance and you were referred to the displays. Then the omelette or fresh fish was only lukewarm again. The best things were the starters, fresh salads and for dessert fresh fruit and the selection of cheeses.
There was coffee at the table for breakfast, as well as two machines for coffee specialties or hot chocolate, but they were often out of order. If you need it, you can drink sparkling wine and vodka for breakfast. The juices are cheap nectars in plastic bottles. The freshly prepared smoothies, on the other hand, are delicious.
The pool area is beautiful, but the water is fresh and there is also pool entertainment from time to time. The mini golf course in Club Laurel is unkempt and you also have to pay a fee.
I found the rules at reception impossible: you are directed to a ticket machine and then have to wait until the ticket moves up the display. It has the feel of a vehicle registration office. The time that the receptionist needs to explain the procedure and to put pushy people in their place - whether intentionally or out of ignorance - could be used more sensibly. If there is a lot of demand, it would certainly be more customer-friendly to have one more place at reception instead of two with five designated places. We have come across better hotels on our vacation.
We found the sporting facilities to be among the best that we’ve encountered at any hotel. We appreciated the rustic charm of the Canarian village-style rooms & we had done our research & knew that the hotel was for those holidaymakers looking for tranquil surroundings. We found the staff to be helpful & professional & they would take time out to exchange greetings of “hola” each day.
We were impressed by being able to check-in to the hotel at the ferry port in Los Cristianos, Tenerife, thereby avoiding queuing in reception on arrival & being able to go straight to our room with the supplied key card, with our luggage arriving shortly afterwards.
The food at the breakfast buffet was plentiful, varied and, in our opinion, good quality. There were freshly cooked omelettes, an outdoor pancake station & a smoothie bar. There was an array of fruits, cold cuts, cheeses, yoghurts, breads, pastries, speciality teas and even cava on offer.
We also dined at the hotel on three evenings & enjoyed the variety of food & the service.
We were staying on a bed & breakfast arrangement and had read beforehand that it was an easy 10-15 minute walk into the fishing village of Playa Santiago (with the benefit of the cliffside lift!). There was a good choice of reasonably priced restaurants and bars to sample there, (even if some of them were closed for their own holidays!). We were fortunate enough to sample Tasca Enyesque, La Chalana, La Cuevita, Pizzeria La Marea, & our favourite Kuss.
We also enjoyed the variety of activities you could participate in – we loved the star gazing walk with Jurgen, and the petanque, table tennis, mini golf & paddle tennis with the animation team – a big shout out to Enzo & Daniela – you are the best!
We would have no hesitation in recommending Hotel Jardin Tecina and hope to return in the future.
The gardens and planting are spectacular and clearly a great asset. The staff members we met were all very friendly and accommodating. The major issue is the difference in room accommodation;
Some of the rooms are in great need of refurbishment and updating. I understand this is due to happen in 2024. Other reviewers have highlighted that the superior rooms with sea views are the ones to select, and to that I would add that the duplex suites are extremely good. We switched to one of these fantastic suites for only and extra €60 pre night and the difference was staggering. Going from a v small room that was stuck in the 1970’s, that was tired, musty and unloved, to a modern, spacious, three storey townhouse with two double-bedrooms, roof terrace, private pool (shared with the other suites) and security. In our view, the other rooms are just very disappointing.
The main restaurant does well for a mass catering outlet. Considering the weight of numbers it has to cope with, the food was always of a very good standard and variety. There are a number of other restaurants on site, and if you’ve taken the half board option you get a good discount on prices, and these offer a much better dining experience. We chose these most nights and had breakfast in the main restaurant.
The pools are very well maintained, and plenty of beds, towels and double-bed cabanas in the suite area.
Tennis and padel are available, with good coaching and a well equipped gym.
La Gomera itself is beautiful and definitely with exploring by car, and take hiking shoes to explore further on foot.
I am sure that following the much needed refurbishment this will continue as an excellent resort, we will certainly return, making sure to be v careful to book the right room first off.
It is a magnificent hotel complex located on the top of a cliff. The very numerous rooms are scattered in a huge beautifully wooded garden. An elevator carved into the rock allows quick and easy access (with a few stairs anyway!) to the beach and extensions of the hotel (swimming pool, restaurant, bar).
Our double room "Oasis" was relatively small for a 4* with a tiny balcony (2 chairs and just room for legs). The view was really tristounette: the slopes of the pool!
Nothing to complain about on the equipment and decoration of the room: bedding, furnishings, etc. The same for the bathroom equipped with an Italian shower.
A downside though. Obviously the room had been recently renovated and had many paint stains on the floor and even on the window frames, which gave the impression of general uncleanliness.
The maintenance of the room was far from perfect: beds sometimes made in haste, crumbs remaining on the table several days, emptying of bottles of water not taken back, etc.
The restaurant is very nice with terraces reserving magnificent views of the bay. Breakfast and dinner buffets with show cooking. Excellent dishes visibly made with quality ingredients. A small lack of diversity however for people allergic to fish.
Kind and attentive service but personal sometimes novice and awkward. Obviously also insufficient, the plates used sometimes pile up on the tables.
Presence of an untested 18 hole golf course but which golf friends told us very well.
Large parking partly covered.
In summary, magnificent hotel not free of small defects, probably still being run-in and which should be able to improve somewhat to deserve a maximum rating.
To highlight the very friendly staff and the food that is varied and abundant, although it has had better times. In my opinion, it has gotten quite old for what they charge.
I chose a sea view (Superior) room which had a spectacular view of the ocean and Playa Santiago. Rooms are a good size with comfortable, quality furniture. Decor is a little dated but clean. My only real negative re the room was the Air-Con fan makes a lot of noise (so not great when trying to sleep). I found the same issue in a different room 6 year ago, so nothing has changed. There is a good size safe in the room (chargeable €2 daily).
The bathroom has the shower above the bath with a shower curtain (so a bit dated) but shower was powerful and the room a good size.
Room cleaning was done well.
The hotel has a very nice pool area with separate children’s area with a large inflatable slide/climbing frame and good sized main pool. The separate “quiet pool” that was available on my last visit is now no longer available (unsure if this was due to building work going on in this part of the hotel or if it was reserved for “special” customers). There is also a separate pool in the Club Laurel complex at the bottom of the cliff.
We were half board and the food seemed even better than on our last visit with good choice and everything seemed fresh and well cooked. It was great to sit outside in the morning in the Gara restaurant overlooking the ocean and village but on the busy weekends we were moved to the larger main restaurant which had only a limited amount of outside space (this was a disappointment but only happened on 4 days out of 14).
One evening we ate A La Carte in the El Laurel (Part of the Club Laurel complex at the bottom of the cliff) . We chose the 7 course taster menu which was super and great value for customers on half board at less that €12 each.
There was entertainment each evening of pretty standard 4 star fare and on some nights there was a separate guitarist outside the main bar.
The location is great if you want a quiet location in a area that doesn’t feel too touristy. There is a lift down the cliff to the main village (although restricted mobility customers should note there are 40 steps to get to the top of the lift and another 40 when you reach the bottom). On reaching the bottom you will find the Club Laurel area with a pool, a bar, restaurants, crazy golf course and a scuba diving school. Its then just a few minutes walk to the promenade in the main village of Playa Santiago.
I found all staff to be attentive, friendly and efficient. I would not hesitate to return.
It was a thoroughly enjoyable holiday. The hotel is, to our thinking, superb. The rooms spread out across the cliff top, with enjoyable views, whether sea or garden views – and the gardens are so well maintained. The staff were excellent, whether reception, restaurant, bar, cleaning or ground staff. They were invariably cheerful and chatty to us, despite our poor grasp of Spanish.
The fitness crew, especially in the gym, were so helpful and of a high quality. My wife and I did many PT, stretching, Yoga, etc. sessions which were so helpful for us. The Aquafit was great, totally hilarious at times. Juan, the gym trainer, was excellent. We use a personal trainer at our gym near home and Juan was up to the standard we've become to expect. Also his personality was just right, especially for the Aquafit.
In the evenings we invariably spent an hour or two with Anne-Tina both listening to her music and chatting to her. She is a real asset to the hotel. Her music, her conversation, her "happiness" really did help to make our time there so enjoyable. The evenings would be very dull without her.
The bar staff gave great service, after a few days they virtually started to prepare our drinks as we approached the bar!
We spent a day luxuriating in the Ahemon Spa, it was perhaps the most relaxing day of the holiday.
We hired a car for 2 weeks, made it so much enjoyable to be able to freely get around the island.
A couple of, in reality, minor comments. At breakfast the English tea we requested more often than not came with hot rather than cold milk. At dinner the hot food really should have been hotter, though as we often had salads this was less of a concern to us.
Would we go back? Certainly if we’re able to.
