There is no finer place to stay in the Barolo wine region than the Felicin Ristorante Albergo Dimora Storico in the breathtakingly beautiful town of Monforte d’Alba which is just 4 miles from the famed wine towns of Barolo (noted for its great Nebbiolo-based wines) and Dogliani (noted for its wonderful Dolcetto wines) but also just 9 miles from bustling Alba and another 9 miles to Barbaresco, also noted for its Nebbiolo-based wines. But the Felicin family hotel, offering stunning views of the vineyards below, is as remarkable as the wines that this commune produces.
This 4-star hotel in the Felecin family for nearly 100 years is located just steps from the town’s plaza in a town of less than 2000 residents. Nino and members of his family were incredibly hospitable, making us feel very much at home, while Nino surprised us at each meal with his superb culinary skills. After some 30 visits to Italy, this hotel/restaurant in every respect is among the finest in all of Italy. Would we visit again? Of course, we would. Sonoma Tom

Felicin was fabulous as always! We have come there since more than 20 years and we always long to go back!
The location is in itself vintage Italy at its best.
The Felicin is cosy, personal, beautiful and special.
The family feeling you get there is wonderful. Some ARE the family and others are "just" part of the family and make you feel part of their family.
The food is excellent. The breakfast too. The wine cellar is of high quality and the pairing of wines to our taste and preferences were right on the money.
We are five friends and we have already booked our next visit. Unfortunately it is only in two years. We all hope we can go earlier as well.

It has been more than 20 years since I last stayed at Giardino da Felicin. I was there a few times back in the 90s. In terms of the quality of the food, service and rooms it has only gotten better.

I got to know Giorgio back then and now it is run by his son Nino. There is the same attention to detail that results in a great and wonderful experience.

Alba and the surrounding small towns are the center of what I consider the best overall combination of food and wine in the world.

The restaurant and wine list measure up to that level in all aspects.

And when it is run by a staff that is client focused as well as accommodating that makes it only more enjoyable.

As a side note the breakfast experience is also top notch with a wide selection of both sweet and savory.

Finally if one is going to Alba and the surrounding area, one might as well go in October during white truffle season. World-class all the way.

We had dinner at da Felicin, sitting outside under the grapes. We choose the chefs menu. The food was marvelous! Very tasty. The food was pared with good wines. The atmosphere is lovely and everyone is friendly. We wondered why this restaurant was not in the Michelin guide, because we think it’s star-worthy. It seems the chef refused this, because he wants to keep it a family restaurant. Anyway…it was the best restaurant we visited in Italy so far!

A really wonderful stay at the beautiful albergo Felicin. We felt very much at home right from the start. Very clean room with nice bathroom - and a beautiful look over the vinyards.
We had dinner in the restaurant on the terrasse twice, and it was excellent both times.
Service is warm and efficient, I can highly recommend this beautiful spot.

Second time staying at Da Felicin and we absolutely loved it. The staff/owners are so hospitable, friendly and caring. The place is incredibly comfortable, intimate and relaxing. The food is beautiful, both breakfast and dinner. Incredible, deep wine list. The views wonderful. Monforte is small but bustling with many osteria. Do not miss Da Felicin - it's a classic of the Langhe and about my most favorite small hotel/inn experience anywhere.

We had a fantastic experience at this cozy hotel. With a lovely view from the terrace where we had breakfast and dinner and also from our balcony. The food is very good and the staff were as helpful and nice as we could wish for. Conveniently also with parking. The village is super nice and a good starting point when you are in Piedmont.

We booked two nights at the end of October to start our honeymoon and could not have been more disappointed.

When we checked in we were shown to a twin, not a double room. When we explained it was our honeymoon we were told that the beds would not be able to be made into a double until the following day (despite it only being around 5pm). It was only when we said we would look for another hotel that a double room could be found.

The most upsetting part of our stay however was the attitude of the staff. Not even a simple 'congratulations'! The staff throughout our visit were so unfriendly and their negativity was really upsetting during what was meant to be a happy stay.

The new double room smelt badly of drains and had dogs barking throughout the night every time the church bells sounded. Two fellow guests left the hotel early for that reason. We did not complain on-site as we had only one night left and were trying to be positive but we did follow-up with a private complaint by email almost one month ago to give the owners a right to reply.

We never received a reply...

Genuinely the worst service we have ever received in Italy, avoid!

Albergo Ristorante Giardino Da Felicin.... It may take some effort to find this never changing restaurant, but the effort will be rewarded. And if your smart, you will book a room ,so, you can relax after the 4 hour dinner! We ate at Felcin 37 years ago 5 hour lunch! Then had to go back. Nothing has changed but the olive tree in the court yard and the next generation carrying the same torch of excellence. And the ambience inside and out is spectacular .
You won't be disappointed

How far in advance must we reserve accommodations for a trip during October/truffle season? Thank you!
Answer from
Sierra Foothills, CA
We booked about 4months in advance for a June trip. We stayed 4 nights at the Albergo residence and used it as a base for our visit to the Piemonte wine region. The residence and ristorante are separate but related operations and part of the deal for staying at the residence is that you book at least one meal at the Ristorante. We were asked to make our dinner reservation at the time of check-in. The ristorante is popular with tourists and was normally filled. If you are just planning on dining there I wouldn't think you'd need to reserve a table more than a week or so in advance, although truffle season is very popular and a little more time might be advisable.
