We have visited in the spring the other times, this time in the middle of the summer, and the lack of air condition was a bit of a problem, warm nights in July. Other than that - perfect
BUT, it would be lovely to have ability to have a cuppa got tea or coffee in the room! Sounds like I'm nitpicking, but only hotel through 4 hotels in Italy that didn't have at least a kettle in the room!
In short, i would definitely return.
Room 306
Family-run, the welcome is always warm and friendly. The rooms are big, beautifully decorated and with views out on to the town (see my photo) or to the alps. My favourite rooms are on the top floor, as they have verandahs you can get out on to, stroll around and take in the stunning vista. The second floor rooms are very nice too.
The hotel's restaurant (closed Sunday) is definitely worth the trip. Go for the gourmet menu and you will be served up with plates and plates of delicious food for not much money. The wine selection is vast, and the local staff are knowledgeable and will take the effort to make sure you get the right bottle. We once saw a gentleman at a neighbouring table quaff back a vintage Barolo, which would have set him back €100 or so, but there are fabulous wines available at under €20 too. The breakfast is excellent -- extremely good for Italy, the coffee is great.
I've brought visiting friends and family from New Zealand here over the years and they've always been charmed. One of the nice things about Monforte d'Alba is that it's not touristy, yet it's just down the road from Barolo and other famous wine villages. It's very relaxing. In fact, it's the place I dream of getting back to as soon as I leave. I hope you enjoy it as much as I always do.
We were booked, by Mac’s Adventure, for a Tuesday night stay as part of a walking program....arrived to find, much to our surprise, the hotel and all facilities closed. So called the number on the front door, front door opens, we are given a room and instructed how to enter and exit thru the side door....THOUGHT WE WERE GUESTS, BUT FEEL LIKE WE ARE AN UNWELCOME INMATES....concierge is unconcerned....we definitely don’t feel like guests.
Moreover while the room is comfortable, there is no apparent air conditioning, no staff to call on Tuesday’s so we need to keep windows open for cool, but we are facing the square so lots of car/truck noise.....oh well.
It’s a “never on a Tuesday” situation if you are thinking of booking....we would not repeat.
Hotel was clean and rooms were spacious, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant was also fantastic, with the streetside tables providing the perfect spot to watch the world.
Only tiny criticism is that there is no air conditioning in the rooms, which, in late July in Italy, means they get very warm. We did, however, ask for a fan, and the staff were only too happy to accommodate. Coffee-making facilities in the rooms would also be a bonus, but the excellent coffee at breakfast meant it wasn't too much of a problem!
PS
You better like the sound of church bells for an alarm clock!
