Travellers' Choice
There is a small section of Tuscany were you can hear the rooster crow every morning, where you can see hills full of golden grain that waves in the wind, where you can still smell the typical aromas of ancient Tuscan culinary tradition at lunch and dinner time... This small corner of paradise is found on the slopes of Monte Amiata, in a sunny and isolated position (the center of the medieval village is only 10 km away), in one of the most beautiful national parks in the world, the Val D'Orcia (Unesco World Heritage Site). Here there is an old farmhouse that has been restructured and furnished in arte povera, where peace, tranquility and hospitality are the landlords.

We had the pleasure of staying at this great Agriturismo S. Apollinare in Tuscany in mid November 2018 for 4 nights. Our hosts, Ornella and Claudio were warm welcoming people who are devoted to seeing to their guests’ every need. They couldn’t do enough for us. Thank you Ornella for the special treat of Tuscan biscuits, homemade of course, for our daily car touring. Delicious! We used three of the four touring route guides that they thoughtfully supplied to us by email- pre-trip. We thought that we were seeing some great sites that were not as well-known as others from the usual tour books. Coming from Canada, our Italian was nonexistent and although they did not speak English, somehow we managed to communicate. And of course there was always Eleanora, their daughter, who was available by phone if we got stuck. Or of course Google Translate. It was clear that Ornella loves to cook for her “new “family. And, Claudio is right there assisting and smiling. They provided hearty four course traditional Tuscan dinners that neither I nor my brother were able to finish. The fig jam made right there was divine! Their olive oil is wonderful and the rosemary and nocci infused home made cheese was delicious as was their own family produced vino, which we drank every day. This is the kind of place that at the end of the trip you want to (and did) take a picture with them for the memories, lots of smiles and invitations to return another year with our spouses. Great experience!

Interesting stay with home food! Apartment is clean and grateful that there is no animals smell. Kids went horse riding at nearby farm and love their cats, kittens, goose and chicken. The food is mostly what they produce. Be awaken by their roosters! Thank you Eleonora and Ornella!

We had a great stay at this charming agriturismo in the picturesque countryside of Tuscany. Great accommodations in the lower level apartment with its own kitchen, dining table, couch and bedroom. Ornella was a welcoming host. She speaks no English, we found ourselves using the Google Translate app a lot and by the last night we could communicate well enough. She has a great little shop where you can buy her marmalades and other canned goods. She waited on us hand and foot providing a huge breakfast spread every morning and 4 course dinner every night. Claudio drove us to the Patricia's neighboring horse farm where we took horseback riding lessons (36 EURO for 2 people), got a tour of the goat and pig barns, and sampled fresh goat cheese. We had a rental car which we took to neighboring hill towns following Elanora's (the daughter who speaks good English but isn't always there) provided itinerary.

We spent four nights here in the middle of March and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Italy. Eleonora, Ornella and Claudio made us feel welcome from the beginning. They were so nice, enthusiastic and friendly that we felt as if they had adopted us into their family. One of the highlights was the food: the meals Ornella prepared were wonderful and delicious and all made from products from the agriturismo. The meals also gave us a great opportunity to chat with the family and get to know them. Our room was so comfortable. Ours was one of the larger spaces, and had a kitchen that was well stocked with breakfast and snack foods: meats, cheeses, breads, jam, juice, coffee, milk, eggs, all from the farm of course. We used the agriturismo as a base to explore Montalcino, Pienza and Siena with our rental car (all of which are easy to get to) and after we were done touring for the day, we would come back to the agriturismo in the evening for the wonderful dinners; though one of our favorite memories was when we spent the entire day at the agriturismo taking a cooking course with Ornella and going horseback riding at a farm down the street (all arranged by the agriturismo). Ornella taught us how to make tagliatelle, gnocchi and sugo al pomodoro, which was so much fun and so delicious! We thoroughly enjoyed talking to the family about Tuscany, history and the farm. I thoroughly appreciated the opportunity to practice my Italian with them. Eleonora and Ornella took us on a nice walk on the property; Claudio and Ornella showed us around the farm, explaining how everything is produced: wine, cheese, olive oil, jam, etc. To sum up, Agriturismo Sant'Apollinare exceeded our expectations for our stay. It was one of the most relaxing, beautiful and authentic-feeling parts of our trip to Italy. The cost is well worth the high quality of the experience. This warm and beautiful family made us feel so welcome and relaxed and like a part of their family. We would stay here again and would heartily recommend this agriturismo to anyone looking for a welcoming, authentic experience in beautiful Tuscany. Thank you! Grazie per tutto! -Jonathan and Kathryn, Santa Fe, NM and Orlando, FL, USA
