Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

First of all do not expect what is shown on AirBnB. The pictures are not up to date and there was a hurricane in 2016. I don't mind basic but unfortunately this place is not very well maintained. It is more of a hostel than a homestay without warm water and electricity being available only from 8.15-9am and 6-9pm. For the price still okay I'd say. The meals are delicious and home cooked. Lice even prepared some vegan stuff only for my boyfriend so he was well fed. Much appreciated.
We stayed in the glamping tent and in a cabin and definitely preferred the tent as it's more privat and has an amazing view especially for sunrise. Although there are some positives to the cabin as well (e.g the private amenities, short distance to the beach).
In the beginning we didn't feel welcomed at all. (There were some rumors a family member died a couple of days earlier but we are not sure if there is any truth to that.) But as we stayed 3 weeks it got better after a while and we enjoyed Lice's hospitality. When you stay that long Grandpa is a bit exhausting. He is commanding and sometimes involes you in stuff which is just not a guest's business.
In the end the beautiful island and the great company we got to know plus the fact that it is cheap still made us stay our whole 3 weeks here.
Unfortunately someone broke into our tent and stole some stuff we forgot to take with us even though we had a lock on. (Most likely one guy living next doors Navi.) This seems to happen quite often here since we haven't been the only ones. Lice replaced some stuff (she promised us to replace it all though) but you just feel uncomfortable knowing there are things getting stolen. That's a reason why we wouldn't come back. Except for that! and our rough start we enjoyed most of our time on Nanuya Lailai and in Sunrise Lagoon.

If you want an opulent resort don't stay here. It is basic but lovely. We had the family room - 20 feet from the beach - palm trees and lovely sand. The room was spacious with attached shower, toilet and sink. There was no hot water, but who cares? The water is naturally warm enough. Meals are communal in the dining room - everyone around two tables - a lovely opportunity to meet people from around the world and discuss experiences and places you've visited.

Lice (pronounced Lee Say) runs the domestic activities and is very hard working and efficient. She will look after you.
It is a short walk (15 mins) across the island to the bar/shop/Blue Lagoon beach. Well worth the walk - fabulous views across the island and the surrounding sea. Directions - take the path from Sunrise and just turn right at every opportunity (3 of them).

Poasa is the elder gentleman of the family. He is a guiding hand and is always willing to express his opinions. These can be quite direct, but they are all meant in friendship. Remember, the Yasawas have only been open to visitors for a few decades so he is very proud to welcome visitors to his community.

We always felt welcome and secure. There were always people around so we were happy to leave our things around without locking stuff away.

Stayed here for 2 nights in the dorm and loved it. It wasnt exactly like the homestay I had in mind (where you live in the same home as the family) but it was more of a family owned resort stay. It allowed me the freedom to roam about and to be entirely alone which I liked. Everyone working there is related and were welcoming.

Accom - I stayed in the dorm. It was basic, mosquito nets provided, shared showers and toilets. The bedding was clean which I really appreciated! Free water refills provided and you can also do your own laundry. Communal charging point electricity in the evenings and some time in the morning. Safety locks arent provided so you must look after your own valuables as is the case anywhere you travel!

Meals were great! Definitely homecooked. We would dine with all the guests during mealtimes and Grandpa Poasa (the owner) would also join us during the meals.

Vibe - Homestay fronts a lovely stretch of beach to just chill at and catch the sunrise from. There are also beautiful trails from the homestay to sunset viewpoints and to the other side of the island. A real chill vibe. Grandpa Poasa was my favourite person to talk to. He may seem fierce or overbearing but once you start talking to him and getting to know him, he's really just an adorable Grandfather figure at the homestay. I loved talking to him and listening to his stories. He would gather the guests after dinner to tell them a tale or two about Fiji and it felt like the village elder was telling stories to the younger ones haha.

Tours were offered at reasonable prices. I only went for the Sawailau Cave tour which was great as we were the first people there before other tourists started coming.

I would definitely recommend staying here!

Short version: Please don’t go anywhere near Jovesa’s properties. It’s nothing like the pictures or the descriptions. Believe me and you will thank me.
Long Version: Me and my girlfriend booked the most expensive option called Ocean View spacious Eco-Cabin in YASAWA PARADISE! In reality, we were welcomed in an abandoned looking shack in the middle of nowhere. No windows to close and stop the rushing winds from the sea. No locking option on the door from outside. Conditions were appalling, hygiene was virtually non-existent and generally, the place looked really really run down. There is no golden-sandy-pristine beach with turquoise water as presented. The nearest suitable beach is on a 30-40 minutes jungle trek from the property. The sea was turbulent with lead-grey waves bashing on your doorstep with a sound making even thinking difficult.
We spend around 30 minutes to figure out what to do in this conditions and decided to cross the island looking for anything besides that. We find the only solution - begging for a cost cut offer for an accommodation at a high-end resort at the other side of the island. Fortunately, the people like all Fijians (besides the host) were really helpful and caring.
Тhe only thing left was getting our money from our host so we can pay at the resort. Which turns out to be impossible. Even spend only 30 minutes we were not able to get anything willingly from Sunrise Lagoon host. He declined every civilized attempt to cooperate and find some sort of agreement.
With our backs to the wall, we involved even Airbnb. Pointless.
I’ll cut the story short around here.
I don’t know and I don’t care how Jovesa will reply to this ‘accusations’ it doesn’t matter anymore. I know what we’ve been through being left on a remote island with the sun coming down in an hour and no phone or internet connection.
Piece of advice: For a little more than the price of Sunrise Lagoon property you can find perfect accommodation options in Nanuya Island Resort. Just check the Boathouse at Nanuya Island Resort and you'll know what I'm talking about. Electricity all the time, breakfast included, the mini market that Jovesa talks about is right there, the perfect Blue lagoon beach is in front of your door (not 40mins hike from Sunrise Lagoon homestay). They provide snorkeling gear (they even have the easybreath masks!!!), kayaks and paddle boards for free!

The homestay was in general relatively enjoyable and a very authentic Fijian experience. The food was very tasty although expensive and quite small and the bathrooms were a bit precarious and dirty. However, it was very enjoyable until some local men started sharing some particularly disturbing anecdotes regarding their treatment of women (tourists) within the hostel. I was with some friends and we were frankly disturbed. PLEASE BEWARE. PARTICULARLY IF YOU'RE A FEMALE TRAVELLING ALONE. Also try to be very aware of your alcohol intake and your personal safety. Although my stay was not bad, I would not recommend this place particularly for women travelling on their own.

In summary: a few positive aspects, but a serious concern with stolen money and properties. On the positive side: the place is very basic but well run, and the ladies in the family are truly nice. The negatives were quite strong for us, and we feel the obligation to share the details with other fellow travelers... 1) During our two-day stay, 3 separate guests had issues with stolen money and properties. We were there when they were reported and we did not observe any reaction or concern from the hosts, which really worried us. We started to look at other online reviews and it seems to be an ongoing issue in multiple cases... it left us quite concerned and we had to be vigilant all the time, which is not the way you want to feel in a family home stay in a quiet island. It is important to note that after this we gladly moved to the home stay next door run by Terry and it was a MUCH better experience overall! We had no worries whatsoever or issues with theft: they provided multiple security measures and we felt much more at ease in every way: it was a true and super pleasant family homestay. Please search for our separate review online under Vunidaka Homestay. 2) The constant and rather controlling presence of the Grandpa made for an "anti-family" feeling. I do realize this is subjective and other travelers might actually like it, but he can be a very overbearing personality, that even his family seemed to be afraid of... he enters rooms both when guests are present and away, sits in every meal, gives unwanted instructions and directions, which again made us keep our guard up in case we would do something that he might not approve of... even though we are actually a low key, polite and no-drama couple! In honesty (and I did share this privately with the family), I think that they could benefit from a stronger presence from the ladies, that were pleasant and warm at all times... In a nutshell: we would not stay there again, but we would gladly go back to the homestay next door.

We stayed at sunrise lagoon for 7 days and had a brilliant time, the family were fantastic and the children were off school which made it even more enjoyable, food was good, huge homemade portions and Terry's cake was a definite highlight!

We stayed in the 11 bed dorm, very basic amenities but what else would you expect for a remote island homestay! You have very thing you need.

The activities on offer are good fun and are done with the family which makes it even more enjoyable, just remember that Fiji runs on Fiji time which includes the activities!

Would highly recomend and we hope to one day go back!

We spent 6 nights at this wonderful homestay with this lovely family. Our hut on the hill was nice and big and all the facilities were great. There are activities available or you can just relax around the property or get out and explore Nanuya Lailai island.

We had such a great time here experiencing real Fiji island living. Breakfast was included with lunch and dinner optional. The food was all amazing home cooking and sooo tasty.

We hope to visit again one day
