Hotel**** - Restaurant Michel TRAMA opened in 1978 in the former residence of Raymond VII, Count of Toulouse. In 2000, this 13th century Bastide was given a whole new look by the interior designer, Jacques Garcia. Today, this quite exceptional hotel, a member of Relais & Châteaux, blends silken fabrics with honey-coloured stone walls, canapés with lion’s paw feet and ancient floor tiles, a succession of rooms and a majestic oak staircase with the patina of time.

We were looking forward to staying at Michel Trama on our final stop on our trip to the west of France. Puymirol is a very small village and was completely deserted in the beginning of October. The only open place we found was our hotel and the local Pharmacy, no cafe, no shops bar a bakery. We walked around the ancient wall that protected the town in old times. It took us about an hour to get back around and we were welcomed by the hotel staff with some cold sparkling water, which was delightful! It was quite warm and humid in the beginning of October. We had rear table in 2 star restaurant, an what a treat that was. We were met by young and enthusiastic staff that were extremely helpful and attentive. The Sommelier suggested something delicious wines by the glass to accompany our meal. And the meal itself was great. Probably the best Dorade Royal we ever have eaten! A huge Thank You to all the Staff who made this stay a very memorable one. So nice to meet young persons that have travelled the world and see them so engaged and eager. And of course a even larger Thank You to the chef M Trama for presenting such a nice meal! We could not have asked for anything else.

Last week my wife and I stayed here and we also dined in the main restaurant, taking the full menu 'degustation'. (….it was our anniversary!) From the start the experience was excellent. Michel Trama and his son were delightful and attentive. Their staff were superb. The food was memorable. The room was very comfortable and well appointed. The breakfast was fresh and light. So, what ruined our experience? Well, as we checked out and received our bill, I saw in front of me on the reception desk a notice saying ‘offer’. It set out, amongst other offers, what we had just experienced (room, main dinner menu, breakfast, etc) at about €180 less than my bill showed. I asked very politely if this offer might be applied to our bill. The two young ladies on reception were charming and said that they would ask the back office if this was OK. After a while another woman (we think the owner’s wife…she never introduced herself: we shall call ‘Madame’) came out and without saying ‘Bonjour’ (very unusual, and very rude, in France), or asking us if we had had a nice stay, or if we had slept well, simply said…. ‘ce n’est pas possible’. She then proceeded to harangue us (the receptionists were getting very embarrassed), saying that the offer was only available for an online booking and it was therefore just not possible to extend the offer to us. She carried on in this vein for about three minutes. We sat and listened. Eventually when we were allowed to speak, my wife pointed out that in fact she had spoken directly to the hotel to make our reservation and at no point had we been advised that a special offer was available, whether directly or online. I also pointed out that it could not be an 'online-only' offer because the ‘offer’ was right there, staring me in the face on the reception desk. Had I simply walked in off the street and booked the offer it would have been available to me. And nowhere did it say, ‘on-line only’. Madame was having none of it, simply repeating that it wasn’t possible, and becoming more and more aggressive. Of course, the offer was eminently possible, but not for Madame. We had had enough by this stage and paid our bill, now just wanting to leave. While waiting for the receipt, Madame, now realising that we were very displeased, and that she may have misjudged the situation, said that she felt we may not be happy with our experience and offered us a pot of jam!! Good grief. Where did this person learn (or not learn) good client relations? The two, now mortified, receptionists came out to help with our luggage. They were so charming. We told them so and thanked them for their attentive assistance but said that Madame in no way exemplified the standards that we had come to expect from our many lovely stays in Relais & Chateaux hotels, let alone from Michelin 2* restaurants. We have subsequently discussed this experience with many of our friends to ascertain whether we might have been over-reacting. To a person they were equally horrified. So, an excellent experience ruined. We suspect that all Madame will now have done is simply remove the offer notice from the reception desk (…or not) 😊.

Like most people who come to stay at Relais & Chateaux Michel Trama at Puymirol, we were here just as much for the 2 star Michelin restaurant (Aubergade) experience as anything else. On both counts we were not disappointed. Although we were on the top floor (lots of stairs) we had a lovely room with a separate bathroom and dressing room. It was quiet, roomy and comfortable. The public areas are beautifully furnished. There is a nice swimming pool too. The Relais staff were most obliging and helpful. The Aubergade experience was outstanding. The meal started with a beautiful amuse bouche and then I had the Aspic en gelee de legumes (sensational - what a clever creation). This was followed by Epaulet d'Agneau - again beautifully cooked and served. The waiting staff were helpful. M le Chef visited each table twice which we appreciated. All in all - a night to remember. The second night we went to the same restaurant but had what I suppose one could call the Menu du Jour, which was again very good. It was nice to juxtapose the two. Breakfasts are also served in the same area. Puymirol is an attractive village and worth a stroll. Perched on a hill, it enjoys some fine views of the countryside. It is also not that far (20 minutes) from the nearest train station (Agen), which we used (taxi to and from). One of the access roads to the town is really narrow and windy. The other more expansive. We had a great time and would recommend the experience to the discerning traveller.

We drove on narrow country roads through meadows and fields to arrive in this beautiful medieval village. Michel Trama has a hotel, a bistro and an elegant restaurant. The restaurant was our destination. We have been wanting to eat here for a few years and it finally fit into our travel plans. Glad we made it! The restaurant is absolutely stunning. It’s decorated by Jacques Garcia, who has done many hotels and restaurants. The stone room is centuries old and the decor is warm, unusual, quirky and completely charming. Service was friendly and very professional. A lollipop of foie gras and tiny olive cake were our amuse bouche. Next, we both had the selection of 5 (count ‘em!) little appetizers. Gorgeous presentation on custom ceramic holder. Each mini was very individual: fish tartare, lobster tempura, cauliflower gratin, crab roll and one we cannot remember. Main courses: foie gras hamburger. Yikes! A giant slice of perfectly sautéed foie gras atop potato, mushroom, garlic chips, served with mushroom “ketchup “. Also, a giant ravioli filled with lobster and finely minced veggies. Pasta was light and perfect and the filling and sauce divine. Desserts were good. Our host, Michel Trama, was charming, friendly and very welcoming. Because of the combination of the surroundings, the service and the food, the experience of dining here was memorable.

Stayed here last week, rooms are lovely, very oldie world with velvets. Nice small pool in the centre of the building but the weather was poor so didn’t get the benefit of it. Would say there is a lack of staff during the day, arrived at 5.00 and couldn’t get a drink, coffee was ok, but there is no bar! We also had a problem with wasps in the room which was a pest....last thing I wanted to do at 11.00pm after our meal was chase wasps around the bedroom before we could sleep.
