Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Do not take some of the reviews on here at face value. This hotel is WAY better than 1star. Honestly, how can these internet savvy people use tripadvisor, and yet NOT look carefully in advance at the available information.

OK, end of rant, here is why I recommend this hotel.

Bergen is an old, pretty and touristic artisan town. And not cheap.
This hotel matches the style of the town. because the building is so old.
It is lovely, but old.
The pictures clearly show some small rooms, with odd shapes, and a very small reception.
It doesnt say it as a lift, so do not be surprised to find steep stairs typical of these older style buildings.

However, this is a lovely family hotel, with a charming sitting room, bar and verandah.
The rooms are comfortable and very clean.
The huge benefit is the location, which is central, and so all the wonderful bars, restaurants and shops are only a short and pretty walk.

If you want a holiday inn, or the ritz, look elsewhere.
Otherwise, you will really enjoy this little gem.

Location Excellent, Breakfast Excellent, Staff Excellent... but, room was terrible, just a tiny hole of a room with a lumpy mattress and ... priced at over 100 Euroes. This was the second room we saw, first one was even worse at the same price with small window and view of a wall.. We wanted to stay in this area and booked over the phone from a magazine add.

This Hotel which has been in business since 1900(hence the name) is a family run ,quaint and old world charm establishment.Situated on the Russenweg , a very short distance from the centre of Bergen (200mts) the Hotel is quiet, with great breakfasts, small rooms (need a bit of DIY in the fittings) ,and very kind and pleasant staff . The Eetcafe Gorter across the road is owned by the Hotel and has an excellent menu and service.
Bergen is an incredible village popular with tourists from all over Europe, calm, peaceful , great cycling ,amazing beach and the 2 best restaurant dinners I have ever eaten --its a secret treasure and I dare any one to stay there and not be totally relaxed after a few days.
Restaurants to try --Wonders/La Terrace/Fabels/Gorter.
Things to try--Cycle through the woods to the beach.
Please note the Hotel is in Bergen although the website keeps bringing up Bergen aan Zee which is 4 miles away on the coast.

We have to stay near Alkmaar some times a year because of our business. Our regular accomodation was not availlable and so we chose the 1900 for one night.
For the first and the last time.
Our room was located in an old house next to the main building on the other side of the street. The room was in the highest floor and it was not easy to reach the room with our suitcases because of the narrow floors.
The room itself was extremely small. The room-door opened directly against the bed.
The walls were very thin. When the guests of the neighbour-room were in the the bath or on the toilet, it sounded if they were in the room. At night we awoke because someone was peeing(!) very loud.
We left the next morning without giving the breakfast a chance.
As we learned there are much better places in Bergen.

We stayed here for two nights together with my parents (who were staying in a different room on a different floor). We had the 3-day deal where breakfast was included as well as a 3-course meal at eetcafe de Gorter across the street (99 euro per night). Bergen is a cute little town that's close to Bergen aan Zee, where you can take nice walks on the beach. Alkmaar, Haarlem, Amsterdam an other tourist destinations such as Volendam, Hoorn and Enkhuizen are also within easy reach. The staff was very friendly. The food was great. For breakfast there were freshly baked rolls with different types of ham and cheese, tomatoes and boiled eggs. There was also bacon and scrambled eggs, yogurt, granola, coffee and fresh orange juice. The food at Gorter was also really good.

The rooms were not that great. They were clean, but small. It was hard to find a place for our suitcase and still be able to close the door. We were sleeping on the top floor and had to be careful not to hit our head on this giant beam as we sat up. The shower was small and had no ventilation and everything got wet when you took a shower. In my parents room they had a toothpick stuck between the shower head and the pipe to hold it up, so that could use some modernizing. But overall we had a really great time there. It seems to be very popular with older ladies who like to go on bike rides, and you can rent a bike from the staff at the front desk.

Please don’t waste your money - this has to be the NOISIEST hotel I have ever stayed in. They are not purpose built hotel rooms so you hear everything, from someone blowing their nose to running the tap, you hear noises and banging from left right and above. No wardrobes but a random cupboard in the corner, sink in the bedroom, no kettle to make tea/coffee. Breakfast buffet is so boring. The only thing it has going is the location. Not a pleasant stay

this hotel reminds me of the quaint atmosphere of days gone: friendly people, warm welcome, wooden tables in the bar area. The rooms are pretty basic (smallish), Yet TV, WIFI, and en suite bathroom are there. You can hear other guests walking past the corridor (we didn't mind). They provide ear-plugs. We didnt use them. The price is reasonable. We paid 89 EUR/night including taxes and breakfast. Dutch breakfast good and abundant. All together, good value for money, if you are not looking for luxury.

I stayed there for 2 days because to say the truth I didn't find anything better ,other hotels were fully booked , but I will never forget it ...!! I had also the last room that was empty and I found out that was not a room actually !! Actually was a cell !! We were 2 persons and the room was a dog house ( really tiny ) about 2 m. width and 4 m. long ... But as I said was the only empt in town ... But the big surprise was when we came back late in the evening to rest and we found a single bed ready and a mattress standing on the wall (the room was single and because we ask for 2 single beds they left a mattress there ,just like this on the wall !!!! ) I went down to the reception but nobody was there .
The next day they apologize for what I got , but they charged me normal ,like all was ok !! So we try to sleep together on the only bed was available... If you like the military style is the ideal place to stay .. They don't smile that much and you get the feeling that that don't really want you there !!! Nice simple decorated at the restaurant area but we didn't try the food there because of all the feeling that we got from them !!! Maybe that kept the way the deal with their guests like when that used to do it in 1900 , so the name fits the place !!!

The hotel is situated in close range to the centre of this nice village called Bergen. Parking is expensive there so we got a licence for it. This licence the hotel provides costs an 7,50 euros a day so you can park in close range and in the centre. We've booked a standard room, which is rather small but everything's in it. They've renovated recently and refurnished all the rooms, unfortunately we could smell. The location and atmosphere makes everything so worth a visit. Breakfast is splendid. At the reception they've got all kind of maps of villages in range, and the people of the hotel are so friendly he made us a map with points worth a visit.
Prices in weekends a bit higher but then still isn't expansive. Next time we will definitely book this hotel!
