If you are prepared and know what to expect then you are in for a magical relaxing time. This being my 3rd visit and most organised to date made the trip memorable and perfect. So we went to the island stocked up with breakfast lunch and dinner for 2 days and drinks. Their is a restaurant u can eat at but we enjoyed the little cook ups and it broke up the day of relaxing with a book, snorkling and swimming. I think the key to this trip is to ask questions to the workers. They are more than happy to answer and very accommodating but if you don't ask they often take it your enjoying your own company and leave you be. My friend and I spent time checking out the island including the back beach and sunset lookout. I think bethams is clean and tidy and has the best location of all accommodation. Request cottage 2 and it's got a veranda and the view is perfect. Although in the middle of all cottages your surrounded by beautiful trees and feel like the only people there. Very private. Only steps away from the water and the most gorgeous tree that is great to hand your towel, snorkel, music and it shades you while sitting in the water. Lots of laughter and memories made here. Great place to have no contact with TV or computers if you choose. We did bring music which really was great. Didn't bother us that the electricity went off we just made sure we were swimming and the night time we had our solar light provided by Rob the owner and sat up playing cards and having a few drinks. Old fashioned fun :) we were sad to leave but know we will return. A great simple place to make memories with your kids, your partner or good friends. Thank you Rob and your staff for an enjoyable stay. :) photos to come.
Things to bring.. Moscito coil. All food needs including sugar salt and pepper and sauce. Music. You can hire snorkling gear but I suggest bringing your own. A torch.

Even thought the Betham's Beach website recommends that you take a bus to Rakiraki and then a taxi to Ellington's Wharf, if you catch a SunBeam bus then there actually is a stop at Ellington Wharf which can cut out the cost of a taxi, which is what I did. But, it was quite a long walk down to the wharf from the bus stop, 20-30 minutes easily. Not my best idea in flip flops. Once I got down to the wharf I paid a dollar to call Betham's and then they came and picked me up. The boat driver was very friendly and someone was waiting for me when I got there. The staff was friendly but not very around very often, but you could ring a bell at the restaurant and they would come help you. I was the only person on the beach for most of the time I was there. This is a good place to go if you want quiet and solitude. You should definitely bring your own food and cook in the kitchen of your cottage. I stayed in a dorm room with a woman who did not bring her own food but bought some from the Betham's Beach store which I assume was quite pricey. The room was a 4 person dorm and would have been quite cramped if 4 people where actually there but there was never more than 2 during my stay.

We stayed for 4 nights & really enjoyed our time there.
The beach is good for swimming & snorkelling & also great for kayaking which were available for us to use.
It's a short walk over to the windier side of the island & from there you can have a nice walk around the Island.
Sunset Point is a great place to sit & watch the sunset.
The cottage was very clean with self catering facilities. You are on a generator that is turned off at night but the food stays cold in the fridge.
Fantastic having your morning coffee outside enjoying the scenery.

Hello everyone,

I made arrangements through hostelworld at this property, where i paid my 10% deposit. They contacted me after to ask me for my creditcard details over email since the need a full payment in advance. I did not accept this, since it is a very insecure way of handling creditcard details. They accepted us to pay cash.
A month later (month before arriving) they Emailed us again, stating they overbooked the room and have to upgrade us but we have to pay the full amount for the new room (original price + 100$ for the new room, full rate). I didn't accept that and offered to share the costs so that I would pay the original price + $50 minus the deposit. I got an instant reply that all rooms and beach-houses are now booked and they cancelled my reservation and I don't see them paying back my deposit.

No good way to treat your customers, so I hope that everyone will read this and skip Betham's in their search for a perfect place on the Islands of Fiji.

Have a good one!

Wouter

ps. (and Betham's, if you read this and want to reply, don't try to talk it right, because as you can see in more replies below, I'm not the first and will probably will not be the last too since you probably only live for the money and not for customer satisfaction). Luckily I don't have to say at your place and be in trouble during our honeymoon over there since that will spoil all the fun.

pps. I will keep you posted if I get my refund from hostelworld.

paupertoko!

We had stayed at Denarau for 5 nights which was excellent. Travelled to Rakiraki by local bus's which was a great way to see various villages, towns and experience some Fiji driving. We arrived at Rakiraki a little jaded and were inundated by taxi drivers,we agreed to go with the first one that met us, however another chap came rushing over to see if we were going to Nananu i ra, he had been given our names so had been looking out for us. An argument pursued between the original driver and him, the latter won and we trundled along with him. He was a nice chap. We were taken to Ellington Wharf, our boat arrived and we were spirited away to the island. Kelly the driver of the boat was a wonderful chap, we were met by a Fijian lady, I was escourted to our room while Rick had no option but to go immediately to the office and pay up!! he was not impressed with how he was treated. The cottage was spacious and clean. However the beds were a disaster. We were in Cottage 2, the mattress on the double bed must have been at least 20 years old, it was ripped, stained and had stuffing protruding. When laid on, we went thru onto the slats, the springs were stuffed and were very noisy. Rick slept on the single bed which was a little better, however it was stuffed too. The list of "don'ts" was incredible. There is no hot water and the only "extra" was soap and toilet paper. The staff were curtious but would not engage, it was as if they weren't allowed. The food from the restaurant was tasty but had a tax put on it. There were no hammocks to rest in, mosquitos were everywhere. McDonalds which is next door, I believe is owned by a sister of the lady who owns Bethams, it has a much friendlier relaxed atmosphere and provides a hammock. Their meals were great and without the tax. We at no time were asked if everything was ok, did we require anything, Rob the chap who runs the place was a "distant" friendly, we never saw his wife. When we left the island two of the Fijian girls waved us off, it was the first time we saw them really happy. Kelly was great. We met some other Kiwis there and they helped our experience to be good, however I would not recommend Bethams to anyone. The atmosphere would need to change drastically, and that would come down to the couple who run it, it is not high class, and I feel they need to treat the people who work there with respect and let them relax and be the wonderful people Fijians naturally are. It was a disappointment, however the island is beautiful.

First time holiday to Fiji, first week spent on Naigani Island restort, what a great place , Bethams was no match to this resort. We arrived at Ellington via Kings road, great trip. Red boat there to pick us up, off to a great start then it all went down hill from here. Arriving on the island. staff met us on the beach, we stayed in number 1 cottage. Old, tired, but clean. Told go straight away to pay for room. There for 3 nights. After that staff not allowed to be caught talking to the quests, told it was like a prison camp for them. Rob and wife ( wife we never met ) have run the place for 16 or 17 years and it shows. The do s and donts up everywhere, seems like they cant tolerate people. Not friendly at all, no hot shower and our weather wasnt hot, so it was boil water in bucket for wash. Seems to be a cash cow for them, meals expensive, their daughter been to Sheraton in Denaru, and said prices too cheap, everything at a cost phone calls, kayaks and as mentioned by others shop had nothing much in it. 25c for 1 tea bag 70c for an egg, corkage was $5 per bottle, everything had a 5% charge on top as well. Ate next door at Mc Donalds no extra 5% plus more relaxed and friendly and much better value for money if you must ,go to this Island, recommend you go there. Funny thing is its run by a sister and seems to be always full, staff happier and are allowed to talk.to the quests.
The generator is off all night 10 pm to 8.30am have gas for cooking, but wouldnt want to go there when really hot no fans or air con. Beach much better on the other side of island for snorkelling and swimming.
Overall would not highly recommend this place , altough Rob was very helpfull in answering questions via email before arriving. He didnt even come and ask us how everthing was at all and didnt come and see us off the island, definetly not the Fijian way and not a genuine fijian experience, there are others out there who do it much much better. Wont be back !!

We took the local buses from nadi to rakiraki which was an experience all on it's own but rob knew we were coming so he had a taxi meet us at the bus depo and take us shopping which we did not at the time know why?? So we only got a few things and off we went to the boat to meet rob! Once we arrived we found out why we should have bought our own food the prices at the restaurant were a little expensive compared to other places but you have to allow for them being on an island! Food was quite yummy none the less. Rooms were clean and cooled with a ceiling fan which cut off when the generator was turned off approx. 10pm. We made use of the free kayaks and paddled around the island which took about 5hrs but was wonderful fish viewing and scenery. Staff remain unseen until you need something and are happy to help and get friendlier over time too!

Situated on a calm Pacific cove, Betham's is perfect for snorkelling with damselfish; Papoo Divers picked up guests at the jetty in the morning.
Room temp showers--plenty of sparkly fresh rain water in the tank; kitchenette burner heated water easily,
Electricity turned off late at bedtime (use small flashlight). Soon alpha Centauri and beta Centauri lit up the reef; everyone should see the Southern Cross once in a lifetime.

No Internet, but hosts will send an email and print the reply,
No air conditioning, but fans and a steady Pacific wind, breezed nicely through the cabins—next morning, I picked fresh lemons from the tree shading my cottage, and rinsed my hair (and dive computer) with silky rainwater.

Betham’s recommended for clean and safe accommodations. Pleasant, quiet and peaceful.

Papoo Divers: Papu, legendary dive guide, with his capable son Tupa, moored the reliable Rose of the Reef to the jetty. She is fitted with visible and accessible life vests, neatly cabled electrical lines, current GPS and marine radio, and her purring Yamaha clipped off the waves, at a steady trot.

Her stern sat low, close to the water, for gentle backward rolls into the blue. On choppy days, Pacific swells did not intimidate Rose of the Reef; she danced over the froth, and picked up her divers easily.
Papu’s launch is not a luxury craft; she is a traditional wooden Fiji closed-hull outboard, a safe and seaworthy dive boat.

Papu began dives with thorough briefing, hand signals, safety and emergency reviews. After each dive, logs are registered. Papu cuts no corners; he has quiet confidence earned from thirty years in the blue.

Pappo Divers: Recommended for safe and spectacular dives. Excellent choice for experienced divers, looking for macro, luminescent soft coral canyons, and sharks. Papoo mobile [---]

Great well priced relaxed lodgings.
I have stayed here 1/2 a dozen times since 1998. The cottages are very homely and you are able to self cater. There is still great breakfast, lunch, and dinner options if you want at the bar. The beach in front of the cottages offer easy snorkelling and swimming & is a child friendly beach ( less stressful than a resort swimming pool) A short walk to the back beach offers more snorkelling and some of the best windsurfing /kitesurfing in the South Pacific. Take a day trip to Oni beach on the other end of the island for a couple of hours on the most pefect white sand palm edged beach with more great snorkelling off the beach. The owners are really nice and the staff are fantastic. The place runs on a generator so power goes off at 9 pm and comes on at 8.30 am there is no hot water so if you want hot showers take a solar shower ($25 at Torpedo 7 in NZ) but really in 29-30 degrees it doesn't matter.
It's my favourite place in Fiji.

Our family spent a WONDERFUL weekend at Betham's last week. Relaxing as ever, wonderful snorkelling with so much soft coral, stunning sunsets and the lovely staff. The drive from Suva was so sad, seeing the devastating destruction to the north of Viti Levu from Cyclone Winston. Due to the damage at Ellington Wharf the lovely folk at Wananavu are letting guests use their Jetty to get across. Nananu-i-ra also took a real beating and the Island has suffered much damage. Resilient as ever, the green is coming back and the residents and businesses have done a massive job cleaning up. Thankfully Betham's lovely cottages are all in tack. The beautiful island and Betham's cottages remain our favourite spot in Fiji. Visit now!
