The first Raffles Spa in China is a sumptuous 1,400 sqm sensory retreat designed to resemble a small Chinese village.

Had a fantastic 5 days here. Ate mostly at the hotel.Super helpful staff excellent level of English and fantastic food and beverage experiences. Special thanks to GM Paul, F&B Alonzo, Spa to Janet and her super team of spa therapist. House keeping kept the room spotless and the front office staff were always helpful in arranging tours. The new gym was full equipped with Techno gym and was always clean and not to busy. I will certainly be back again soon.

We have been at this property during mid autumn festival holidays and really enjoyed the quiteness of the hotel and its cleanliness.
Nevertheless the peace was broken during breakfast. We like to have breakfast outdoor but, exactly during breakfast time, the hotel management decided it was the right time to do renovation works of the restaurant area... noisy and dusty, unfortunatelly.
One great plus of the location is the beach where you can finally swim without getting bothered by speedboats or lifeguards saying that it's crazy dangerous to swim in the sea... unfortunatelly this part of Sanya is full of sand flyes, we were not prepared and got bit on the first day, itchy and painfull for the next 10 days

Booked a sea view room, due to bad smell issues had to change twice, finally the manager found another room and it we as an upgraded so we were quite happy about that
While arriving no one to greet us
Breakfast quality is ok but it’s extremely crowded with families that you sometimes have to queue, better be there early
Pool is great, if you go between 1 and 4pm it will be basically empty
Loads of families so not really couple friendly
Great beach, it says you can’t swim but plenty of people do, it’s fine if you don’t go too far.
Good landscaping, very green
Very poor F&B options, except the Chinese restaurant. Extorsion on some items like watermelon jug for 50 USD...
Price is on the slightly low side for the rooms, maybe can consider a pool villa for more privacy
I believe this hotel suffered from considerable lack of staff which I assume is due to COVID, but overall if you don’t mind for the lack of service and rather poor FB then it’s not a bad choice, as the surroundings and beach is super clean
Lastly, the gym is excellent
Hopefully it can live by its name in the near future, as raffles deserves better compared to their other properties. Maybe it’s due to the local agile brand management which is cutting costs too much.
Anyway, quite happy overall

I only visited the Clearwater lounge bar for a drink and didn’t stay at the hotel itself, so this review might come off as harsh. However I feel it’s important to give my feedback.

Upon asking the barmaid for a brandy, I was made to wait around 10 minutes before the drink was eventually served to me by a different barman, because he was faffing around in the kitchen. Turns out he was preparing ice. He put ice in the glass without asking me, which I didn’t want, so I made him take it out.

When I sat down with my drink, on closer inspection I could see that the glass was filthy. So I took it back and told the barman who served me. He took the glass off me, poured the brandy from the glass into a spirit measurer, cleaned the glass with a cloth, then poured the brandy back in. I politely declined and asked for a fresh glass with fresh brandy, £30 a serving so not cheap.

I’ve lived in China for many years and expats here will know that hospitality and bar service isn’t their strongest skill, that’s just a fact. Please ensure your bar staff are fully trained and know all about good service, health and safety and sanitation.

Pathetic and disappointing overall.

Pros: Fantastic and quiet beach with soft sand, clear water and deck chairs with shade

Upgrade to a suite which was massive and had a stunning 180 degree view of the sea

The rest of the trip was one criticism after the other:

Calls to reception are not answered.

Asked for breakfast to be sent to room because of the space being so small and the crowds being so large that one needs to queue at the two coffee machines for the entire hotel population at breakfast. Coffee machine broken when it was our turn, so no coffee that morning at breakfast. The lady at reception said she would find it and call us- never did. It is so crowded that guests need to carry food to the restaurant across the foyer. The quality of the breakfast is really poor. Bacon that isn't bacon, cheap processed sausages and breakfast that is shocking for a hotel with this brand name.

Room has a pillow menu. We asked for two at about 9.00 pm. Nothing arrived until 10 pm when I had to call several times, get disconnected several times, phone ringing out and finally someone picking up and confirming they would send it, which they did at about 10.15 pm.

F&B is overpriced here. No happy hours. We enjoyed our stay much more at other hotels of the same price range in Sanya.

Order drinks at Italian onsite restaurant. Told they don't have fun or coconut milk to make cocktails (Pina colada and the Hainan sling). Next evening, we ordered Pina colada at the lounge and it was terrible. They used the packaged local Chinese coconut drink to make a watery cocktail. Mind you, the prices are 5star but the quality is 1 star.

Ordered a burger at the lounge and asked for mayo. Took about 15 mins to come. Burger was had by then. The waiter did give us a discount thankfully.

Room cleaned and the door was left open by cleaning staff which we saw when we returned!

If it weren't for the room upgrade, this trip would be a complete flop. For the price we paid, and for the Raffles brand promising luxury, it is a total joke.

Genuinely cannot recommend it. Such a beautiful property and nice suites, but the service and quality of F&B are dismal.

Booking a long week end at Raffles in Sanya and expecting top notch services as we are used frim their Cambodian properties - what a disappointment arriving here. We booked a premium villa with lounge access that we confirmed over phone before to be working giving some of the hotel operations managing to reduce costs with Covid. Upon arrival when asking we were told the regular lounge is closed and that the general restaurant does cater in lieu of for that. Then arriving at our room - the pathway was full off rubbish bags that had not been picked up by housekeeping. Our entrance door still had the goodies plate from the previous guest sitting there. Inside housekeeping cleaning was soso as the living room table was still dirty and some left over on the carpet. The so called lounge drinks and appetizers were just level of an 3 maybe 2 star place.
Poor management and supervison - clearly lacking either competency or motivation or both ?
We are trying the restaurant tonite... lets see.

Love the landscape and the Balinese design. It brought a piece of South East Asia to me. We especially appreciated the size of the room and the view of our private pool sitting on our balcony sipping coffee in the morning. The children enjoyed the activities organized by the Raffles Rascals from crab catching to coconut bowling, soap making and we found Susan at the spa to be very kind to us. She led us in the soap making activities and showed us the herb garden. The kids also went surfing. I found the room price value during the holidays to be of good value. Except for the Italian restaurant that was good, I felt like the rest of the food could use with some improvement in quality. Overall really enjoyed our stay! Oh and beware of tiny mosquitoes that are very itchy so bring your insect repellent.

Most 5 star hotels in China look beautiful, they are very clean and the food is usually excellent. Service, however, can be worryingly poor, particularly when one does not speak Chinese. This hotel has made a commitment to change this perception and to create superb, individualized service for all- even finding a way to get around the communication barrier for international guests. The service we received during our stay is the best we have received in Hainan Island by far, and indeed, probably the best we have received during our years in China. The new GM has made improved service and attention to detail his mission and his training of staff is already in place. Many members of staff went out of their way to ensure our stay was wonderful. Raymond was extraordinary- an exceptionally committed and hardworking staff member to whom we are so grateful. BeiBei is a great catch for this hotel and on her team, Jane, Walt and Chef Eric always went that extra mile to serve us and indeed, to anticipate our needs. We shall return to this hotel and we look forward to our next stay- congratulations and thank you all for a really wonderful, relaxing, luxurious stay.

We decided to spend 12 nights at this resort hotel and after a couple of issues checking in, the hotel and management didn’t stop until our magical holiday was perfect.
Breakfast was a real treat and open until 11 am which is perfect for those who do not want to rush! There’s two swimming pools to keep you occupied and the private beach is wonderful. A short stroll to the harbour or to watch the sunset in the evening is close by too.
We ate dinner at the Italian restaurant which was delightful and in room dining was fantastic and reasonably priced.
The staff around the hotel made us feel very welcomed and I know from speaking with the resort manager that he is really developing this service further.
A massive thank you to Owen (Director of Resort) and the Duty manager Charles who went above and beyond to ensure we received 5* hospitality.
We will definitely return in the future!
