I stayed 2 nights here at the end of Heaphy. It was ran by Paul, who owned Rongo's as well, and Paul was such a wonderful host. I got out of the trail close to 8pm and managed to arrange for a pick up, which was a life saver as this was a remote region. On the way to town, Paul was regaling me with stories of the region. Even though it was past dinner time, his team scrounge some dinner for me. The Baches were a walking distance to town and had cute retro deco. My cabin was very comfortable and just perfect for a end-of-hike relaxation. I enjoyed the small-town hospitality and highly recommend a stay.

A very retro place to stay and interesting because of this. We had problems with no cold water but boiling hot water coming through the shower. Could not pick up any wifi. Lovely manager who was very helpful.

Thanks Mike, The mixer on the shower turned out to be faulty and the baches have metal cladding that blocks the wifi signal...If you went near the door, the wifi signal is good. Sorry you had these issues, but glad you found the baches interesting. Thanks for staying with us and should you ever return, we have fixed the mixer and if you go closer to the door, you'll get good wifi. Regards from Sunny Karamea, Paul.

Loved this place!! We stayed in a wee cabin behind the motel units .. loved the right colours and retro feel. It reminded me of visiting the west coast as a child and all the houses were crazy colours - loved it. The hostess was lovely and friendly too. Thank you!!

Lovely authentic (even retro!) little kiwi baches with a very welcoming host who really looked after us. Great spot for two day stay exploring local walks in the winter. Heating was adequate, but electrtic blankets made it cosy.

Stayed for 2 nights in February. Inexpensive ,however the one we stayed in was in desperate need of a makeover.!! Mould in toilet ,in shower,on ceiling ,peeling paint. room smelt damp. Forget Kiwi charm, retro interiors, this bach came straight out of the 60s and basically has not been touched since. The full cooking facilities, a good number of electrical appliances ,large fridge, nice bed and linen, and a friendly woman manager were a plus. A interior repaint and some TLC would have me giving give it 4 stars . Close to a number of walks, interest spots etc.

Hi Liz M, Thanks for taking the time to review your stay with us. We have some work to do on the baches and plan to refresh them this winter. The baches are indeed built in the 1960s and we have sought to keep them that way, but mould is unacceptable, please accept our apology and II assure you we will redouble our efforts to keep the baches clean and tidy and comfortable. Thanks also for your positive comments regarding the facilities, the location of the complex and our lovely manager Maree. We plan to renovate the baches this winter, but keep their retro Kiwiana appeal. Please come and stay again next year and check out what we've done with the place. Regards from Sunny Karamea, Paul.
