I stayed at Rongo Backpackers with the intention of being there for a couple of days, however, I caught the bug and wanted to stay forever. I ended up staying a month. The atmosphere is exceptional and is hard to put into words - however I will try. Karamea, is beautiful place, very remote and peaceful - if you are sick of busy cities and want to unwind, this is the place for you.

The staff are amazing - Paul the owner is kind and knowledgeable about sustainable living and farming and permaculture. Tristan and Brian are Brilliant and will help with any issues you have and attend to all your needs.

There is a Firebath, potluck dinners, a cool farm, loads of amazing walks (heaphy track, Mt Stormy which is not for the fainthearted with a bloody scary LOTR style walkway bit)

Trust me, go to this place and you will love it. The living room has an awesome fireplace and all the guests share meals and take food from the garden (which is free).

I could go on - I miss it and will go back.

So many fond memories

Well, came for 1 day and stayed for 4!!!
Fabulous place and great people too. Even for those of us who 'may' be a tad older than your average backpacker, this place was a treat --- welcoming, friendly and fun.
Very 'quirky' ---- in an 'interesting, colourful, comfy ' way --- with really good underpinning philosophy supporting conservation and self sustainability.
Certainly the best place we found to just relax, be involved in things if we wanted to be, and just watch the world go by.
Thank you Paul, Sanae, Sean and all the others there, for taking good care of us! Would strongly recommend others to visit.

Mary & Derek -UK.

Rongo is a hidden gem in Karamea. Comfortable, cozy, warm, artistic, stimulating. There's always something going on over there, whether it's a radio dj show, a campfire, music-making, art-making, farming, etc etc. My partner and I arrived at Rongo with the intent to make a short documentary about Paul's (the owner) larger project -- the Living in Peace project. We found a whole crew of really inspired people living and working on their dreams. This place is very special and for anyone interesting in finding out more about the project just check out: https://vimeo.com/43035300

Rongo was the worst backpackers I have ever stayed in. We came off the heaphy track after 4 days of walking to get a cold shower with no privacy in the shower area. The dorm rooms were dark and dingy, the place didn't feel clean and the owner was incredibly obnoxious. The huts while we were tramping were a much better standard than those encountered at Rongo. Karamea is a lovely part of the country, but I would definitely recommend staying at the other backpackers in town if you ever travel in this area, or for half the price you can stay in the local domain where at least you can get a hot shower.

This hostel does not have many paying guests. The only other paying guests we saw came off the end of the Heaphy Track. You might want to stay here if you are looking for work - the owner wil help people find work without having a visa. The owner does not seem able to differentiate between paying guests and people working for him and I found him very rude.

The place was quite interesting in that it was arty and was trying to be a "hippy" place (run by the same man that owns the motel and other local businesses). The layout of the living room encouraged people to chat and we found a lot of the people staying there long-term to be very friendly.

Unfortunately there seemed to be no one paid to clean. Our bedsheets were stained and the kitchen was often dirty. The beds were old and basic. There is also no privacy in the showers.

I would only recommend this place if other budget accommodation in the area is booked out (there is another small backpackers). It is overpriced for the quality provided, would have been happier staying here if the price was more in line with cheaper budget hostels.

The local area is intersting to visit, particularly the Oparara Basin with limestone features and caves.

I stayed for one night to see the oparara basin. Someone had recommended this hostel to me, due to the relaxed atmosphere. I didn't find it relaxed in the slightest. I felt like I was forced to join in the communal activities. Like playing games (which I didn't), but also giving someone a lift even though I needed time to myself and even washing up! That sounds more like communist than hippie to me. Also I found the price high for the facilities you got. I left very early in the morning and was relieved I could.

Hi Sarah, Thanks for taking time to let us know what you thought about your time at Rongo Backpackers & Gallery in Karamea. It's possible from your review that a relaxed atmosphere is not the kind of place you are comfortable with. This is the kind of vibe we try and create at Rongo as we find most travellers are looking for somewhere to relax and feel at home. We also encourage our guests to interact with each other and foster communication through activities and by providing opportunities for people to get to know each other, this is surely one of the principle reasons for people to travel and stay at a hostel where they can meet people from other countries, cultures, traditions, religions and beliefs. We also encourage people with vehicles to take people without a car to the scenic attractions around the Karamea region if they have spare seats available as there are limited transport options available for people to access places like the Heaphy Track and Oparara Basin. We always ask if you would like some company and if it is OK. If you didn't want to offer your spare seats to other travellers to assist them in accessing the many scenic attractions in the region, you could have declined…it is by no means compulsory. If you had merely mentioned that you would like time to yourself, I'm certain that would have been respected, but perhaps you would have been more comfortable at our other accommodation business Karamea Farm Baches where you can have your own self-contained unit and spend time alone without the social atmosphere of a hostel. I don't consider that the business is either "hippie" or "communist" and am disappointed that you found it so. I hope you enjoy the rest of your travels around New Zealand and I also hope that you embrace the opportunity to meet and interact with other travellers as I consider this is part of the rich experience that travel affords. Should you come back to Karamea someday, please consider staying at Karamea Farm Baches if you'd like your own space. Regards from Sunny Karamea, Paul.

We were looking for really any accommodation in Karamea over Easter because we have been very late with our bookings. So we contacted the owner of Rongo backpackers initially for renting one of his holiday homes. They were booked out but he offered us a double room in Rongo backpackers. This was not a given because we were travelling with a little 10 month old boy and we were a bit worried to disturb others with the noises of our little one.

Anyways, we loved it there. It is not a standard backpacker just to provide you accommodation. This place has character. I spend hours just reading and looking at all the quirky things hanging off the walls. We travelled a lot around New Zealand but we will definitely go back to Karamea and we will stay at Rongo's again if possible.

Rongo's backpacker has a very nice backyard area where you can sit and chill out, good music is playing all day long. I have never seen a vegie garden like the one at Rongo's and you are free to help yourself. The kitchen area is nicely connected but still separated from the common area to hang out and eat. Our bed was really nice and firm - comfy to sleep in. The showers are heated by solar power devices and the water provided depends on the rain but it didn't rain in Karamea for two weeks when we arrived and the showers were still working. So the showers are not very hot but surly warm enough to enjoy it. You can easily walk to the shops in Karamea from the backpacker.

Half the people staying there are Woofers and all of them seem to love it over there. They added a nice vibe to the whole place. The owner Paul is a nice fella as well.

I can just highly recommend it if you are looking for something slightly different. The world needs more places like this.

I expected maybe too much from this place because I heard good things about it and I maybe stayed at the wrong moment so my comment might sound a bit grumpy. I was in a twin room that was pretty dusty with poor linen. The door to the room led directly to the lounge right in front of the piano which the drunk guests were playing at any time and it felt like my head was inside the instrument. The hostel is great if you are not picky at all (not very clean showers with no lock on the door.. i mean curtain.. there is no door, the kitchen is super tiny). What annoyed me the most was the pretty high price I payed for the room with no privacy, no noise isolation AT ALL, bad linen & mattresses and weird personal photographs of the owners and their friends/family etc. The veges/herbs garden is nice and I loved the cactus and succulents one. When I arrived the few guests and helpers all said hello introducing themselves wich was really nice.
So if you are very laid back and don't mind paying a bit more than a lot of bkpackers in nz, you won't get cleanliness or privacy but you'll definitely meet interesting people.

Hi Calendulaa, Thank you for your constructive comments on how we might improve the hostel. We have replaced the linen and mattresses and the removed the drunk guests, added locks to the now spotless showers. I hope you are able to return someday and give the place another try as I suspect you were there on a day when the other guests were not as considerate as they might have been. I'm sorry you didn't really enjoy your stay with us, but I assure you we will not rest until Rongo is recognised the world over as the best place to stay ever. Thaks again for taking the time to share your thoughts, Regards from Sunny Karamea, Paul.

I cannot recommend Rongo Backpackers highly enough and urge everyone going through Karamea (coming from the Heaphy Track) to spend a couple of days in this lovely place (every 4th night is free - where else do you get such a deal?)!

The premises are artsy, colourful and lovingly decorated, and I loved the Green Room where I stayed those four days. The staff is lovable and try to make everything possible for their guests (taking them to the Oparara Basin for example, which is awe-inspiring), and they create an atmosphere of a home away from home. Many times, everyone cooks together and they eat together at the long table, very much like a family.

Leaving Karamea and Rongo almost brought tears to my eyes; I felt very much at home.
Thank you, Paul, Jonas and Tristan, for the wonderful time I had at the northernmost point of the Westcoast!

You know you want it!

Hi Katja…My Goodness, if hostel owners were permitted to review guests, we'd give you an A+ Thanks for coming to stay with us, you were indeed a model customer and thank you so much for taking the time to let us know you enjoyed your stay and to recommend Rongo to others. We work hard and do our very best to provide for our guests and create a comfortable and interesting place for travellers to stay and it's fantastic to hear that, in your case, we have been successful. Have a really great time on your travels around New Zealand and should you have a spare four nights, come and back and see us again any time! Happy Trails my friend. Regards from Sunny Karamea, Paul.

My first stay at Rongos 5 weeks ago, was ‘hippyish’ but OK. Lovely staff who were helpful and friendly and kept the place clean and tidy. I have just returned from my second stay and was very disappointed to find the standard had slipped. There were few paying guests but multiple ‘WOOFERS’ who staffed the complex. The atmosphere was weird to say the least. I was greeted by a man with a joint in hand, followed by members of the public arriving for ‘Colour light therapy.’ Throughout my stay, I witnessed numerous ‘odd’ encounters and I felt ill at ease.

Additionally, the cleanliness was very poor. The bedroom was clean and tidy – no complaints there. However, the bathroom was disgusting. The plugs in the shower were blocked with hair and scum which had obviously been there a long time. All of the showers needed a really good scrub, clean shower curtains and a privacy upgrade! The only two showers (curtained only) were in one room with two toilets (one curtained and one lockable) The room smelt musty and old, not to mention the lack of hot water. NOTE there was one other separate toilet down the corridor available but the hand basin had only cold water and slimy soap. The kitchen was messy and crowded, often by the staff. I always cleaned the bench before I could use it. The inside of the cupboards needed a good clean – cups upside down on dirty shelves.

While I admire the attempt at sustainability, overall this accommodation falls well short of other backpackers.

Hi and thanks for taking to time to write about your experience at Rongo. As the owner of the business, I am interested in both positive and negative feedback from our guests and work to hard correct aspects of the hostel that are not necessarily up to par and elicit less than favorable reviews like yours. While we have no control over the people who come and stay with us and their habits, we are able to improve on aspects of the hostel, such as cleanliness of the bathrooms, kitchen etc. I find that the level of cleaning that I like to maintain sometimes falls below what is acceptable and I sometimes need to reset the target level. I have done this and we seek to maintain a hight level of cleanliness and care throughout the hostel. I apologize if you found it otherwise, but please know that we have listened to your complaints and sought to remedy the situation. As for the person greeting you with a "joint" in hand, I am at a loss to explain that, other than to suggest that it was perhaps the "Light Healer" who came to stay and that it is possible he was holding a hand-rolled cigarette as I do not permit the use of drugs on the premises. A do accept that this person was somewhat unusual and while I initially permitted him to conduct his light-healing practice at the hostel, this soon became problematic and I asked him to move on. I apologize if the person made you feel uncomfortable and I take full responsibility for the decision I made that, with the benefit if hindsight, now seems an unwise one. We have upgraded the bathrooms and thoroughly cleaned the kitchen cupboards and lined them with vinyl to improve ease of cleaning. Thank you for your feedback, if I don't know of potential problems, I am unable to fix them, so I appreciate you pointing out areas that we could improve. I do hope you will come back some day and see that we have addressed the issues you raised and overcome the problems. Regards from Sunny Karamea, Paul.
