Detailed Reviews
Overall we thought this place was quite average and expensive for what it was. The walls are thin so you hear everything from the rooms either side as well as people walking along outside your room. The bathroom is in need of ventilation - the only way to do this was to leave a window open which attracts bugs at night and isn't safe to do when you go out during the day.
We ate dinner at the restaurant once and thought it was overpriced, however made allowances as it is in the middle of nowhere. The second night we got fish and chips takeaway and headed to the beach to watch the sunset.
On the plus side, the hosts were friendly, the location is pretty central in Karamea, there is an onsite bar with a limited selection of beer, a pool table and two cute cats.

My husband and I booked Studio (ensuite) for $130 in October for one night stay. That was a wee frustrating stay for us. A good example of when the imagery of the website gallery looks tremendously better than the place in real life. Sadly, but owners don't seem to put enough of effort to keep the area alive and modern. Perhaps, ages ago, this place looked and felt decent but not now.
Don't get me wrong. It is not terrible, and I am not expecting luxuries 5star for 130$. Still, I don't like to pay money for the result displayed on the internet, which appears to be not even close in real life.
* The unit was dark, light bulbs gave not enough of light.
* Torn wallpaper in the corners.
* Outdated renovation. Lots of small things that catch your eye.
* Crookedly hanging mirrors.
* The fridge door faces the wall, so you can't fully open the fridge. Seriously?
* The car park area around the units is a bare ground; so, on a rainy day, all this turns into the mud you bring into the room.

I've been travelling around NZ a lot, and do have experience with different sort of accommodation for this price range. Frankly, for this money, I've seen much better places. If you are ok with staying in the tent - better to go to Kohaihai beach campsite (16 km driving up North from Karamea). Beautiful spot just for 8$ per night for a person.

To be fair, I should mention the positive sides:
* Friendly staff.
* The bar seemed to be a trendy place, cause when we get there on a rainy day was all packed with guests.
* Lovely entrance in the colonial (?) style.

The Last Resort is ideally placed for your time in Karamea whether you are there for the arches or the estuary or the tracks. Take time to look at the welcoming mosaic when you arrive; a lot of work went into it. The somewhat rustic appearance of the complex fits comfortably into the Karamea environment. The amenities such as the restaurant and the parking are excellent. All you would expect to find in a motel room is there except the lighting is not the best and one chair and two stools for three people? In the restaurant, the continental breakfasts were really good and not expensive while our dinners over the three nights were superb. We paid city prices for the pork and scallops, for the salmon, for the lamb shanks but it was well worth it. Congratulations and thanks to the staff.

Lovely arrival. Dinner was very nice.
Room was a bit budget for 130.00 we asked for a upgrade on arrival with a bath but it was 40 dollars so we kindly declined.
We weren't acknowledged on our anniversary that I had sent a special request for.
There was cob webs in the door way and ceiling.
No sleep every 15minutes a humming sounds would start up and sounded like wind whooshing though a pipe it was horrible.
Got up for a shower after a sleepless night and after 2 minutes it went cold! Let it run for at least 10minutes, tried far left, tried far right and in the centre, still cold while standing in there!
25minutes after phoning reception the handy man arrived to replace the gas to tell us there was hot water!
Got told at reception this was on us!!!!!
We were offered a bowl of Cereal and a cup of coffee to make up for this. Such a shame I enjoyed my time here last time. I won't be coming back and I will no longer recommend it after how that was handled. We spent a lot of money there for our room and in their restaurant just to get no sleep and no hot water. Very very upset.

Food was delicious - especially the blue cod and chips. Nice setting and outdoor area. Service was friendly. Meals were quite pricey ($28 average) but I guess that is what you get at a restaurant that was right at the end of NZ.

Five wet muddy trampers turned up unannounced and unbooked and were welcomed by Maggie and her team with open arms. After hot showers, a magnificent dinner (try the lamb shanks) great stories around the fire and comfy spotless rooms. Highly recommended, thanks Maggie.

We stayed one night and had a meal twice in restaurant.
Accommodation bit disappointing but the restaurant was relaxing and enjoyable with friendly staff and good food options.
I ate the Venison and my wife ate blue cod first night both meals good and second night was New Year’s Eve and the meal was a buffet with a lot of different options including butter chicken roast pork belly and beef black bean and broccoli colliflower roast potatoes etc.
Cakes pavlova cheese cakes and custard for desserts.

We overnighted here after hiking the Heaphy Track. Friendly staff, great hot showers, comfy beds, good coffee and meals at the on-site cafe and restaurant. We recommend the pies - yum.
They cater for many types of traveller with motel type accommodation, ensuite rooms, and back packer shared bathroom rooms. We found them simple, clean and tidy.

We stayed three nights and the bed was a bit hard, and the lights a bit dim (my pet peeve) but the food and hospitality were so good I can overlook it. The bar is warm and comfy with a log burner in both the bar and the restaurant. The staff are friendly and efficient. The food was superb and the portions generous!! The first night we had the chefs special, pork belly with scallops. The second night I had beer battered blue cod (fish of the day) and my partner had lamb shank. The third night I had seafood chowder which was thick and full of seafood and a HUGE bowl. My partner had ribeye steak with garlic butter and veges that was cooked to perfection. We had two different chefs over the three nights but couldn’t fault either of them. Up there with the best restaurants we have ever dined at. Good selection of wines and beers and comfy couches in the bar to chill out.
Will definitely be back. Thank you Tania and team for making our trip away the best ever.

+1
We were welcomed to Karamea with a (stereotypical) West Coast bout of weather. Arriving in a real downpour I made a dash to the reception are only to find the door locked, but managed to find access via the bar area. Check in was easy enough having pre booked and just needed to make payment. Pricing was ok.
A sizeable property overall with a number of units and fortunately parking at/close to the unit door. The interior of the unit we had was tidy and functional enough especially for a one night stay, but showing a little bit of age related wear and tear to the carpets. Usual tea/coffee facilities, kettle and a microwave for the basics. Good sized bathroom/shower, comfortable bed, basic fan type wall heater and a wall mounted tv and satellite tv box.
The restaurant food was a highlight. We ended up with a great evening meal, and a drink at a reasonable price looked after by a pleasant waitress. The cooked breakfast the following morning to set us up well as Karamea township options were a little limited.
