Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This place is very dated & needs a makeover desperately .. the tv remote in our room didn't work & we were told we had to change the channels manually on the freeview box !! ... there was mould on the inside of the windows & cobwebs outside... When we went to turn the heater on the power points didn't work so had to plug it in elsewhere. For dinner we both had the 'Crispy Pork w/ scallops' - this sounded really nice but when it arrived there was no crispy crackling on one of the plates .. it came with too much potato mash (presume to fill up the plate + coleslaw which had no dressing - no one came to check that our meals were ok - our desserts .. cheesecake & lemon meringue pie were lovely but small. Breakfast the following morning was a bit of a disaster as well ... when we turned up the 'Continental' breakfast wasn't even all out ... only 3 types of basic cereal, tinned peaches & no yogurt (even though it is meant to be included) ... the fruit juice was watered down with ice & the spreads for the toast was in shared jars - no individual sachets to be hygenic. Later as we were leaving we saw that some cheese, ham & crackers had been put out ... this left a bad taste in our mouths so won't be reccommending this place to anyone.

The Last Resort has a range of accommodation - we stayed in a studio which was perfect for us with tons of space so we didn’t get “cabin-fever” when it was pouring with rain outside. The Last Resort has many hikers and bikers so the room decor is functional, but still cosy. The cafe and restaurant is welcoming and full of character with a much appreciated fire, good food and interesting guests and locals for a chat.

We turned up for early dinner around 5:30 and there were only a couple of tables. No welcome, no greetings, just point us to a table. No menu, no water. So we went to counter to order as it didn’t look like we would be served. An hour later, after watching plates and plates of food coming out and headed elsewhere, where people turned up after us, we inquired and was told the food would come soon. Another 20 minutes later and again more food has come out but not in our direction, we asked again and was told that yes, our order was now pushed to the front. This was odd. We should have been at the front. Another 20 minutes passed before the food finally came. And no apologies. It did seem that there was an attitude and serving speed for locals and those that look certain ways, and a different speed and attitude to those that look different. Karamea is a cute little town, but restaurants like this are doing it a disservice. The hotel down the road looks way better.

Five wet muddy trampers turned up unannounced and unbooked and were welcomed by Maggie and her team with open arms. After hot showers, a magnificent dinner (try the lamb shanks) great stories around the fire and comfy spotless rooms. Highly recommended, thanks Maggie.

What a treat this place is! The accommodation was great - clean, spacious and very comfortable - but the magical and most special aspect of our stay had to be the people there. Maggie and Bruce and the fantastic staff they have working with them. I so loved the community/whanau that we became a part of for the little time we were there. Absolutely loved every meal, created with care and love.

My experience at The Last Resort hotel in Karamea was mixed. I had stayed there before and was very satisfied with the accommodation, food, cafe, and service. However, when I returned this year, I was disappointed to find that the service and food quality had declined significantly. The owners and the place itself seemed tired, and there didn't seem to be enough staff to handle the workload. My evening meal in the restaurant was the worst experience I've ever had in a restaurant. Three out of five people didn't get their food requests met, which was a major letdown. To make matters worse, the owners shared their complaints about other guests with us, which felt unprofessional and inappropriate. The resort's cleanliness was also lacking. The windows were dirty, and there were cobwebs everywhere. The camp kitchen was in dire need of an upgrade. Overall, my experience at The Last Resort was not as enjoyable as my previous stay. While the accommodation was still comfortable, the poor service and food quality, combined with the lack of attention to cleanliness and maintenance, made it a disappointing experience. I hope the owners take steps to improve the resort's overall quality, as it has the potential to be a great place to stay in Karamea.

Quite basic, but very clean. It was a long drive from Christchurch, so the comfy bed was very welcome. Room was a bit hot & stuffy, not a lot of air flow. Dinner was great & a decent variety on the menu. Staff all very friendly and helpful

We just stopped off for lunch on our way through to see the Moria and Oparara arches. There wasn't a soul around but they agreed to cook us lunch and my gosh what a delicious lunch it was. I would highly recommend their food, it was a suprise gem!

Thank you to Maggie and her team for making our 5 days at the Last Resort one of the best family holidays we have had in NZ. We were able to bring our dog with us which was a bonus. Even though the team were very busy the food was awesome and the staff were friendly. We will definitely be back!!

I booked five rooms and a villa for my friends and all were impressed with the comfortable beds, the friendly manager and the overall happy relaxed west coast feel to the place. Karamera is well worth the drive as it is in its own micro climate.
