Great villa with awesome views of the lagoon and super friendly staff.

The private pool makes Muris low tide not so difficult and an easy way to keep cool without having to leave the accomodation.

Stones throw away from a bakery, coffee shop, plenty of restaurants and car hire facilities + walking distance from the night markets.

The villa itself has a very homely feel, plenty of windows for ventilation and natural light but also have curtains for privacy and to keep the inside a bit cooler when needed, bed is super comfy and we had complimentary fruit and bubbly.

5GB of data with hotspot included with each booking and we didn’t have to top up once. (frankly, you shouldn’t need to anyway given where you are)

5/5 - would come back 👍🏼

This was our first time to Rarotonga and we are so glad we choose to stay at Sokala Villas.
Lawrence was waiting for us on arrival and showed us around our villa. Chilled wine in fridge, beautiful fresh fruit in bowl, milk, cereal in fridge and beautiful flowers in every room.
We can’t thank Lawrence, Susan, Sarina and the rest of the team for making us feel like family. We look forward to visiting again next year. You guys are awesome.

Our second visit to this venue and it didn’t disappoint. We stayed 7 nights and next time may stay longer. Waterfront unit means exactly that. The lagoon comes up virtually to the deck when tide is in. Good safe snorkelling only 50 metres away . The units are rustic but clean & tidy and good size . Recommend you get the ones with their own swimming pool in the deck. Complimentary tropical fruit bowl and cereal last us for the week for breakfasts. Easy walk to restaurants and night market. Bus stops at top of driveway if you want to bus into town or hire a scooter just down the road. Go there, take a good book relax and chill out. Staff all very friendly and helpful. If you want resort style accomodation with people everywhere and kids splashing about in the pool then this venue may not be for you. However if you want secluded private peaceful then you will love it. And if you feel like a resort for an hour or two there are a few nearby you can go to for lunch or dinner.

We stayed in a beachfront villa with a pool for a week - honestly could have stayed much longer. The villas are all spacious, spotlessly clean, and perfect for a relaxing time on the beach away from distractions like TV and internet. Full kitchens made it easy to cook when we wanted to.

We were recommended Sokala by a travel agent and likely wouldn't have looked here without her recommendation, but it is the perfect adults only place to relax, unwind and enjoy Rarotonga without any pressure. The villas aren't brand spanking new or five star flash, but that's part of their very real charm (think falling asleep to the sound of the ocean and a breeze coming through the windows). Having the private pool was great and very refreshing.

Easy walking distance to everything in Muri, and with the beach right there, swimming, kayaking and snorkelling are easy. If you're travelling with friends, this is a great option to be able to book multiple villas and be nearby, but still have independence and your own space.

Lawrance was an incredibly friendly host, happy to chat, and happy to leave you Ito relax - he managed to always strike the right balance.

We thoroughly enjoyed out 6 nights at Sokala Villas. Having a private swimming pool & deck connected to our Villa was very welcoming and the beautiful Muri Beach was only a short walk away down the path. Lawrence our host was extremely helpful and is a font of knowledge on all aspects of the Island - recommend having a good chat with him upon your arrival as he can provide lots of good advice for day trips, restaurants, etc. We cannot speak highly enough of Lawrence and his family who go out of their way to ensure your experience is an enjoyable one. These are very good people and gracious hosts

The Sokala Villas right on the sands of Muri Beach in Rarotonga, largest island in the Cook Is group are a haven of tranquility and beauty. Each villa (there are 5 or so) is separate and private. Dawn is breathtaking as it rises over the little island on the other side of the lagoon. The stars at night are extraordinarily clear, the tropical fish are at your feet and owner/host Lawrence is so helpful, attentive and constantly available for anything the gusts may want.Convenience stores are close by as are little restaurants right on the beach. Local bus transportation is a few minutes walk away to get you anywhere on the island. Truly, a place to be experienced at least once in your lifetime.

Like coming home! I've been staying at Sokala for years and I love it. The only place I will stay when we are there - unless they are booked out and then they always go above and beyond to try and fit me in somewhere. My fave villa is beachfront with the pool. Perfect!! Nga mihi aroha te whanau o Sokala!!

We arrived at 4 am in the Morning in Rarotonga, and Lawrence, the owner, was already waiting for us.

We just did a normal booking, but we've got a really nice villa with pool. After a few days he told us, we could upgrade (at no extra cost of course) to a beachfront villa. So: Lawrence, who runs this place since 15 years, is the first highlight of Sokala Villas. He's just lovely and there to help you whenever you need something.

As there are no children under 12 allowed, it seems to be a typical honeymoon destination. It's really, really quiet there and you can relax as you want. The villas are built of wood and really nice decorated. When we arrived, there was a bottle of sparkling wine, flowers and fruits waiting for us. Of course, everything was clean.

Nearly every villa has a own pool, and even the beach is just 10 secs away that's nice as well ... Also if you want to do some nude sunbathing (which is not forbidden in rarotonga but the people won't like it, so don't do it), you can easily do it on your villa at the pool.

Sokala Villas doesn't offer breakfast or dinner, but that's no problem. A supermarket is just 1 minute footwalk away, and so you can prepare yourself a nice private breakfast at the pool - which we much preferred against some "club service". If you want to have lunch or dinner, there are a lot restaurants around Sokala Villas. You can reach everything within 10 minutes walking. Also there is a bus stop in front of the door, if you want to go to the "city centre" (which is not tooo big). Even an internet cafe is around the corner!

Rarotonga is really a lovely place to visit. If you ever thought, whether these typical pictures in the brochures of travel agencies are shot - go there. They really have this clean, blue water in the lagoon, the palm trees with coconuts and nice fishes when you go snorkelling.

So, in a word: Sokala Villas is highly recommended. The staff is lovely, the villas are modern and clean and really nice.

A word to other commentators: I haven't seen a single cockroach in the whole 6 days, so cleanness is definitely not a problem. Maybe you'll find the Cocks annoying, which begin to make noises somewhen at 6 in the morning - but I haven't had a problem with that, and I think it's not a big problem at all.

There is nothing bad to say about Sokala Villas. The owner, Lawrence, was a gent; friendly, helpful and knowledgable. We hadn't booked a villa with a pool, but Lawrence gave us one anyway.

Be aware of the lizards! The noise of them initially freaked us out, but they are tiny and harmless and they eat the flies and mosquitoes, so they're your friends!

We had all the privacy we could ever want. There are no kids under 11 allowed in the resort, so you have constant peace and quiet. I couldn't even tell if there were other people staying there most of the time. You can use the free canoes to paddle out to the little islands. We saw shoals of fish leaping out of the water, sea cucumbers, crabs everywhere...just stunning natural things all around.

There are no poisonous creatures on Raro and the only things which bite are the mosquitoes and giant millipedes (but we didn't see any of those).

The island is very pretty. We were there off-season and it was never cold. Bike hire was cheap ($10 per day) and handy.

This is definitely the place to go if you need some relaxation time. If you're into sitting on a beach. We're used to life in a city, so we felt a bit bored after two days - we like music. There isn't any.

The Rarotongans haven't really bought into the 'tourist' thing wholesale, even though it seems to be the basis of their economy. The bars and restaurants were closed and awful lot of the time. Saturday night we tried to go out for a meal in Avarua (the main town) and only one place was open. Even there most people were sitting looking bored, there was no music playing and the waitress was so slow. Food was pretty good though.

The milkshake in the cafe next to the traffic island is amazing.

It's a good idea to go to a resort to get some food, but don't order the sausages! Mine looked like strange grey slugs.

Sails Restaurant is very good, but book ahead. The Flame Tree Restaurant gets lots of accolades in the guidebooks, but it depends what you order. My chicken was stunning, but my partner's curry was utterly horrible.

As Raro is a Christian island, they're not supposed to seel alcohol on a Sunday, but the shop near us did.

The bus which circles the island is handy. Get a ten journey ticket for $20. Better than the $5 return. Be aware that after a certain time the bus only goes one way round the island.

The guidebooks tell you to 'avoid public displays of --- affection' on the island. We got funny looks from the locals when we held hands! The guidebooks also warm you about the strange dogs which roam the island, but I didn't see any of those near Sokala.

Roosters will wake you up, but you won't mind.

I am trying to think of bad things about the island, but there isn't really that much. Perhaps the worst is that on the whole, the island doesn't really do 'customer service', that's why Sokala is such a good place - they really take care of you.

If you want to visit a place which is genuinely unspoiled, this is for you. Rarotongans are not the friendliest people in the world (not quite rude, but getting there), but Sokala more than makes up for that small disappointment.

We recently stayed at Sokala Villas. I was disappointed based on the excellent reviews it got. I will try and be as honest as possible so that others can use this review for informative purposes.

Pros:
1. Lawrance the owner is very nice and helpful and is almost always around to personally handle any issues.
2. Muri Beach location in the quiet end of Muri. Amazing views from the property of Muri lagoon and the motus. Free use of kayaks is really nice also. Has the advantage of being able to walk to Flame Tree, Sails, Pacific Resort, convenience store, internet cafe, etc.
3. Villas are very large. Its nice to have a completely separate bedroom area, kitchen/dining area and lounge area, not to mention the huge deck.

Cons:
1. Ants. We had a lot of ants in our villa. Bug spray barely made a dent and they gave us ant bait that helped some but didn't completely take care of problem. This could have been caused by a prior tenant(s), not sure but it seemed like ants were extremely prevalent everywhere all around (and inside) the villas. I understand this is the tropics but other places we stayed didn't have the same issue. We didn't leave any food outside of our fridge, didn't use the kitchen and immediately put the welcome fruit bowl in the freezer to kill the ants on that.
2. Pool was freezing cold. This may have been due to the fact that they had about 5 days of rain/clouds before we got there, but we still didn't really use the pool at all because of this. (We would not have paid extra for private pool if we had known this).
3. General age/wear of property. I'm not sure of the exact age, but its beginning to show signs of wear and tear. The curtains are torn/not terribly clean, the screen doors are all getting a bit loose/warped, furniture is a bit worn-looking, the shower was dreary, the lighting inside the villa were dim at best. The pools are also in need of re-plastering and honestly, even the decks could be re-done.
4. The current in front of property was very strong a few days we were there. Although its shallow (waist/chest deep), we found it impossible to wade across one day and couldn't even take the kayaks out. Again not sure if this is a rare event but we had a couple of says like this.

In summary, Sokala has a nice location, amazing views and nice large villas. Lawrance is a very friendly and helpful owner. In my opinion, they could be upgraded and it seemed like they may have been starting to upgrade as it looked like they were working on one of the villas and a pool while we were there. Sokala reminds me of a summer rental cabin, with the rustic appearance and timber exteriors and interiors. I'm a bugaphobe, so if ants don't bother you and you don't mind a cold pool you might love it, like many others on here have. If you are looking for a little more luxury or a more finished/updated property I would look elsewhere.
