We were looking for accommodation under NZD500 per night not as easy as you may think! We trawled the web pages and found Dorothys Beach Bungalows. WOW what a find NZD100 per night or $150 with air con in the bedroom. It wasn't the height of summer and although 28C ,with the ceiling fan in the lounge and slats in the windows we were fine. Dorothys are 2 bungalows side by side right next to the Pacific resort to the South of the island on beautiful Muri Beach and lagoon. The beach was literally 45 steps away. The bungalows are 2 years old with high wooden ceilings, tiled floors and many windows with insect screens. There were 2 decks (patios for you non kiwis!) one at the front and one at the rear of the bedroom with garden funiture. Inside there is a lounge with dining room table and chairs, TV with DVD player, a kitchen with gas hob and electric convection oven, toaster, fridge, jug etc etc. The bathroom had a glass vanity and large tiled shower. The 1 bedroom had super Kingsize bed large wardrobe with electronic safe. It was all spotless. The only thing it could have done with was a small 2 seater sofa as the only chairs were the dining chairs. We got round this by wheeling the TV into the bedroom where we watched DVDs late at night. The bed was large and super comfy. We were met at the airport by Ivor the owner who met us with fragrant leis transfer was NZD30. Asd we arrived at 11pm well worth it as Raro at night is very dark and you need to take care driving watch out for dogs and coconuts. We hired a car the next day and left it at the airport when we left. Muri is fabulous and having gone all round the Island wouldn't have wanted to stay anywhere else. There was a small shop close by and the fabulous Sails restaurant on the beach virtually next door. We had a great stay and thank Ivor for his graciousness.
For excellent value you can't go wrong we checked out other
resorts and some were really old and passed it whilst the nice ones were NZD500-700 per night just not worth it in our opinion. We spent our days on the beach swimming and snorkelling the sea is warm and crystal clear. Dorothys has a shower in the large garden to wash off the sand. If you want clean reasonable accommodation for an excellent price you can't go wrong choosing Dorothys. Just take a corkscrew for the wine you will be drinking on the patio. Sorry no photos as we did a DVD recording

Well we have had one of the most relaxing holidays we've had in years ! From the time we were picked up at the airport and were given beautiful lays around our necks to the moment we flew out yesterday ! Dorothy's bungalow s are lovely a real home away from home ! We were in number 1 and were very happy with everything ! Bill and Maureen were so helpful and went well out of their way to make sure we had everything and even took us out snorkeling to one of the best spots on the island ! Such kind people and we now call friends ! We also have a few new friends in the chicks who came for bread each morning !!
The bed was really comfy showers really good lots of hot water and everything so close we didn't even hire a car ! The Saturday market is a must lots of colour ,food and a fantastic show ! Just hop on the bus to get there in 20 mins !! Either clockwise or anti clockwise !! We went one way and came back the other so went right around the island ! We cooked BBQ dinners some nights but loved Rick Shaw restaurant ! We would be locals there if it was in Auckland !! The lagoon is tranquil warm and inviting we spent many hours there just relaxing or swimming ! So all in all we couldn't falt anything and will be back to Dorothy's hopefully with some friends next time !! Thanks so much Ivor for making everything from booking to transfers and everything !_and huge thanks to Bill and Maureen for everything !! See you soon !!!

For someone not looking for an expensive resort this is the place for you. These bungalows are unpretentious and are for those who enjoy self-service accommodation. While they don't have a beach frontage it is a very short walk to the sea. They are very well placed close to a general store for most of your food requirements, lovely restaurants, an evening food market and the best swimming spot on the island. They are clean, have a good hot shower and are just great for a family, or in our case for a couple. Ivor and Dorothy are very helpful and really look after their guests. When we arrived there was a pawpaw and some passionfruit in the fruit bowl. Bill and Maureen are always on hand for advice and anything you might want to know. We enjoyed their company as well.

Dorothy's Bungalows were so affordable, clean, convenient and Ivor and Dorothy are such great hosts. We loved the fact that we had self contained units so close to the Beach at Muri - sheltered when it was windy and away from the noise of the main road. The option to cook for yourself or just walk a couple of minutes to a resort or the sailing club if we wanted a meal or a cocktail - fantastic. We had a great BBQ, all the utensils you need, very comfortable bed and fully fly screened etc. We even had 2 outdoor areas to relax in the lovely gardens. I like the fact that locals own and run it so our money stays in the country and not going to some big corporation. With solar panels and recycling it is an eco-friendly place to stay as well. We're going back for sure.

We recently stayed at Muri Beach for a few nights. Dorothy's bungalows is perfectly situated within walking distance to town and the beach. If you want to snorkel, going further south is better, but the lagoon just outside is great for swimming and not bad for snorkeling. The bungalow was clean and very comfortable to stay in. Would definitely recommend for anyone staying in the area!

If your looking for luxury then this isn't for you. But if you want decent accomodation with everything you would want then stay here.
Plus points - a washing machine and dryer plus an airer to hang stuff on outside to dry, modern fridge and freezer. Ceiling and another fan in the bedroom. Outside space with BBQ plus chairs and table. Thirty second walk to the beach.
Down points - blooming roosters waking you up at four in the morning!! Air con is extra. Shower took ages to drain away and was in danger of flooding.
Loved the location close to restaurants beach and bus stop but tucked away so nobody knew where you were.
Loved the resident dog who won our hearts over ad stayed with us through the whole stay even coming snorkelling with us!!!

We have now stayed at Dorothy's twice and this time was even more relaxing, friendly and pleasant than the first, which was very special. We found the rooms were exceptional for the price - clean, in excellent condition, comfortable, centrally situated for beach, shops, restaurants and transport. There are many eating places of various sizes and menus very close by. The drums we heard were from Captain Tama's "drum school" but were not intrusive. The beach is one of the best on the island with an easy wade over to the motu at most tides, with easy snorkelling on the way.
This is the ultimate of tropical holidays and we are and older with experience of almost all South Pacific islands.
And then there are the hosts - Ivor and Dorothy are the friendliest, most obliging and happy hosts you could find, without being intrusive.
If you are going to the Cooks - don't go past Dorothys.

Before we booked Dorothys I read many of the reviews on trip advisor, all of which were complimentary. The one that mentioned the noise was not on here when we booked. The noise itself is cultural drumming which is fine if you like that kind of thing every night from about 8.30pm, needless to say we were not expecting the drumming but this was not a problem. We stayed while there was building work going on which we were warned about and for which we received a discount on the rate for. What I did not sign up for was the private area off our bedroom being not so private. On the only morning it was fine enough to get up early and read outside, the owner decided to come around the back at 8.30am and do some gardening. I was in just my underwear as I thought this was private (no where near the building site), so i went inside feeling very uncomfotable, he also did this the next morning before we were even out of bed, i felt like our privacy was not respected at all.

Upon arrival the milk supplied in the fridge was expired, there were 3 soap bar remnants in the shower, one containing a large pubic hair on it, and a dead cockroach in one of the kitchen drawers. So definately not the immaculately clean accommodation we were expecting based on the previous reviews of this accommodation.

The location was really good, you just walk down a short path and you're on Muri close to kayak and snorkell hire, and snickers cocktails at the point restaurant. The accommodation was good, it was a bit small but only due to the fact that the weather was really bad and we spent alot more time there than we had hoped. The bed is really comfy and the ventilation was really good, as was the fan. The kitchen is well euipped, but there is no microwave. There is dishwashing liquid and washing powder which was much appreciated. The bathroom shower pressure is very good for raro, and the bathroom is nicely laid out.

It is overall a good place to stay if you are out and about every day. I hope that we were the exception to their cleanliness and that no one else has our experience. It is an awesome location for a good price, but i would not recommend it to a friend.

Great place to stay. Close to beach and in the heart of muri. Had everything we needed and was very clean, had all amenities (cooking, washing) and staff were very friendly and helpful. Private outdoor areas were fantastic and just a minute stroll down to the beach. It far exceeded our expectations and I would highly recommend it to people travelling to rarotonga!

It was our fourth time that we had spent a wonderful holiday at Dorothy's Bungalows. We like those Bungalows for a number of reasons: first, they are very nice, fairly new, very quiet, and peaceful. They are less than a stone throw away from one of Rarotonga’s most beautiful beaches and yet nicely protected from the winds that sometimes occur due to those big trees located off the sandy white beach and crystal clean warm waters! We are already making plans for next year to return o Dorothy’s Bungalows.

Hello, can see anything from the bungalows # 2 - mountains, ocean etc
Answer from Glen T
Hi MJ, you can see the mountains from the front of the bungalows, there is also a small river behind the bungalows. The beach is 20 seconds away and for Dorothy Bungalow stayers there is also a Private beach.
