Our room is facing the Fujiyama directly without any buildings blocking. It’s was stunning view with a comfortable room. But the hot water supply with lower water pressure was not very stable in our room.
It has an outdoor public onsen pool, you can basically facing the Fujiyama to enjoy the onsen water. The Kawaguchi just right outside the hotel, you can see some cherry blossoms there as well.
Overall it’s a very good place with reasonable price to stay.
We came at a time when many parts of the hotel was still undergoing renovation (it seemed we were one of the three groups who stayed in the hotel on that night). This may explain why both the dinner and breakfast was very average.
We were lucky that the weather was good and we just walked across the road after dinner to enjoy the firework. All of us agreed that we would stay here again simply because of the excellent view of Mt Fuji.
so please becareful when you booking or asked them about food type and quality
for hotel please tell honestly to customer. you shouldn't set promotion price in website or at least please remark the different then guest can make their decision. not by yourself
The reasons why we chose this hotel are: 1) Unobstructied view of Mount Fuji mirrored in Lake Kawaguchiko from guest room; 2) Fair price for quest rooms with private open-air onsen bath; and 3) Easy access with bus stop of the popular Sight-seeing retrobus right in front of the hotel.
With ¥2550 2-day Fujigoko passport for free ride of Fujikyu fixed route bus and sightseeing bus, we left Yamadaya Hotel in Lake Shojiko around 8:40AM and arrived at Sunnide Resort around 10AM. Due to busy check-out hours at that time, we waited about 15 minutes to have our luggage temporarily stored. The front desk manager was very helpful and professional. There was a short but relatively steep slope climbing up to the hotel lobby from the bus stop in the lake front. The slope is a little bit too steep for the elderly or the disabled requiring wheelchair.
There are only 9 guest rooms in the “Sen Ikkei” building with private open-air onsen bath. The Japanese words of “Sen Ikkei” could be translated as “a rare one out of thousand view”, which we couldn’t agree more. One can enjoy a magnificent view blending in Mount Fuji, Lake Kawaguchiko and Cherry blossom directly from the balcony in these rooms. For some reasons, we were not able to book 70 square-meter premium suite for two consecutive nights on Japanican website. We ended up having the 70 square-meter premium suite (Room 243) for first night, and the 60 square-meter grand suite (Room 343) for the second night. Size-wise, the premium suite is definitively more comfortable than the grand suite. With privacy protected by the extended roof of restaurant below, hotel quests in the second floor room could enjoy a great view of Mount Fuji through the transparent balcony glass while immersing in the private open-air onsen bath. The guests of the 3rd floor rooms have a better view of Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko while standing in the balcony. However, the view of Mount Fuji in the open-air onsen in the 3rd floor rooms is slightly compromised by the balcony ground glass, which is to protect the guest privacy from the tourists in lake shore.
We have breakfast and dinner plans for both nights. The standard Kaiseki dinner with lobster as one of its dishes in the first night was excellent. The main course of the second night dinner was the expansive Koshu Wine Beef, which was the only choice we had on Japanican Website. As a result, the room price for the 2nd night smaller grand suite was higher than the first night larger premium suite. The Koshu Wife Beef dinner was also very good. But I would just go for the standard Kaiseki dinner next time. Remember to book the early dinner around 6pm and request for a window side table to simultaneously enjoy excellent cuisine and the majestic view of Mount Fuji. The breakfast was mixed western and Japanese style buffet. The quality of the breakfast was first class too.
I would recommend travelers who are willing to pay a little extra money to enjoy a first class guest rooms with private open-air onsen. I would also recommend Sunnide Resort to budge travelers, who could book Sunnide Cottages with a reasonable price.
Staff and check in experience was poor, unfriendly and unprofessional. Upon check in, the staff couldn't locate our booking despite our advance booking through a reputable website Japanican for which we showed them a detailed print out. Took them about close to 20 minutes to locate. Staff was unfriendly and look frustrated as they couldn't find our bookings. We didn't feel like we were treated as guest but more of a burden for them
Atmosphere, facilities and amenities was not great either. The hotel looks fairly outdated. Pictures in website must have been heavily photoshopped. The room was noticeably smaller compare to other ryokan around kawaguchiko and there were lots of insects. The bathroom was tiny but because the onsen was fairly crammed and old, we opted for the inroom shower instead. This was the first time in ryokan that I couldn't be bothered to use the onsen. Food was ok. Not bad but not great either.
Overall, if you are looking for a tidy, clean ryokan and good location with decent Fuji-san view, Sunnide may have just pass the bar. But for the price you paid, you can find plenty of other options without feeling cheated. Bare in mind though that I book this during the golden week so a lot of things are inflated but this is one is way over the top. Good luck and hope you find this useful.
The hotel is half empty, yet still very not flexible. And if late check out can't be accomodated, it would be nice to give a little explanation and done with a smile. For sure it is not a language barrier because that staff speaks good english.
So unhappy I'm writing this review while still staying at the hotel.
I book 2 rooms one for my parents , my sister and I we got room No.206 which has bad view as the terrace on the right .
For my Japanese friend they got room 205 which is better view.
I a bit disappointed coz I inform them it's surprise trip for my 34th Wedding Anniversary but they set the worst room on that floor for us.
The out door onsen is small. It's for 4-5 people max.
Dinner is so so.
Breakfast is wonderful.
The outdoor on-san was relaxing but it got crowded in the evening so it is better to go there in the early morning with fewer people and clearer sky.
The traditional japanese dinner was satisfying and delicious. Although the staff spoke little english, it is more than enough to understand more about japanese food.
It was quite difficult to get there by bus. We got off the bus around 3km away from the resort. Luckily, a local people offered us a ride. So if you are going there from Kawaguchiko station by bus, get off when you see the second art gallery (美術館) you see from the signboard inside the bus.
