Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed 3 nights in the hostel and we also eat breakfast and dinner there. The rooms are big with 4 beds inside. You also can sit outside on the terrace of the room and enjoy the nice view. Or you can sit in front from the community room an enjoy the little afternoon buffet. In the „center of loshoto“ there is an coffee-corner and you can play a game with the locals and trink the best coffee in town. The „center“ you can reach by walk in 25 minutes.
Sabine does everything for us. She booked a guide for daytrip, it was amazing, and she bought us the bus ticket to dar-es-salaam. She does not took money for herself for this things. That let it feel very familiar.

Me and two friends stayed here for a night, arriving in the evening and starting a trek of the Usambara mountains the following morning. We read only great reviews beforehand, but when we came to this place it wasnt quite what we expected. First, it took us about a 5-10 min drive from Lushoto to get here, on a very bumpy offroad type of street which gave us some doubts on the way. And when we arrived there was an enormous Tripadvisor sign at the gate which seemed rather threatening than welcoming. The Resthouse was completely dead, except for 2 staff members and 2 security guards there was nobody else, although the Resthouse was quite spacious.
I m still giving 4 stars because the rooms themselves are good, you have a great view in the morning, and the few staff members were very, very helpful when we spontaneously asked if there was anything to eat ( late in the evening ) and they all of a sudden cooked us a great dinner with a big variety of things.
So I guess it was just our individual situation of arriving late in the evening that gave the whole hotel a creepy flair in the beginning, but the place itself is good. The only real downer is that it is not within walking distance of Lushoto.

Dear guest, thanks much for taking time to review our place! Yes, we are a little outside of town, like 20 min walking distance, which also has the advantage of beeing a more quietand relaxing place, than in the busy town. Unfortunatly the roadconditions are not up to us to repair, the local town government has to deal with this, so we do not have much influence on that one. Our outside sign is large because sometimes people get lost to find us and we are restricted on how to buiold up signboards. You came at a time, there have been no other guests, so I do not know what you did expect to find?! Sometimes all rooms are booked, sometimes none or only one or two. So, if there are no guests, there is no need for many staff members on side, only the ones needed to keep up and being standby. I am happy to hear, that you recognized, that even the few staff people where able to make and serve you an amazing dinner. You might come back another time finding our place more busy. Thanks much and welcome again!

The resthouse is just a 10 min walk from the center, up the hill, so you are close enough for a quick visit to the town - but already far enough to enjoy the quietness - and the great view towards the opposite mountain range. The place has a very warm feel and genuine friendliness. Here we were neither "forgotten", nor talked into trips..or anything else. Staff and management are real lovely people ready to assist in any way. Rooms very spacious, bathroom big too, all with terraces - everything in perfect condition. Food choice great and nutritious. All done with a lot of care and attention. We have already been to other places in Lushoto...but Kanaani is definitely going to be our only choice in the future. We will be back for a language course if all goes well!

Hi Amina, thank you for your rating. We always enjoy reading we are first choice. But to be honest: you must be in very very good physical condition: most guests need a 20 to 25 minutes walk from Kanaani to downtown Lushoto. And they often take a motorcycle taxi (bobaboda) for their way back - much fun for little money.

Simple, spacious and functional (family)rooms with cosy terrace and wunderful, panoramic view. The food is delicious and plenty. Kanaani Resthouse is 30 minutes by foot away from the center of Lushoto, there are various hiking possibilities in the surroundings. The warm-hearted team gave us the feeling of being welcome from the first moment. A really good place to relax and to feel comfortable :)! Best value for money.

We stayed here 4 nights and had a really great time! Sabine, the owner, is a warm hearted, friendly person, who knows a lot about Lushoto, the region and the tansanien people and will always help you if you have any questions. The food is fantastic and the landscape is beautiful. You can do a lot of hiking in the impressive Usambara mountains here during your time. Our room was big, clean and cozy.

Highly recommended!

I traveled alone and spent 3 nights in Kanaani resthouse.
It was low season, and there was nobody else there. The guesthouse is not very close to the town, 20/30 minutes walking, but the road is safe.
My room (a family one) was big 3 windows and bathroom with hot water.
The towels were really old and there were moisture spots on the ceiling.
Not a nice first impression... but in general the room was clean and ok (fast cleaning service every day).
The best thing was the food, a big choice for breakfast and dinner with fresh fruits and vegetables, even if I was the only guest!
The staff was nice and helpful, but I had the bad surprise to find half of the clothes I gave them to wash, with stains of rust very hard to take them off.. they probably laid them on dirty wires..
I was really disappointed because they didn't tell me what was happened and just bu change I discovered it, few hours before leaving (they had put my things in a bag).
I insisted that at least they did not charge me the last night and of course the laundry service (about $ 25 for all), although the value of my ruined clothes was double ...
The owner Sabine was not there, and she didn't answer to the phone when the receptionist guy call her to explain ... and at the end I didn't pay. I was also sorry for the small incident
because apart from this, I was quite happy about my stay there ...

Dear Ingrid, Thanks much for your review. There are only a few older towels, ( means one year) , which the colour faded out, most of them are new. I think unfortunately you got the few older ones. As for the moisture spots, we had unexpected heavy rains in Lushoto, which also even closed the road for some days between Mombo and Lushoto, so we had been not able to repair the spots at once during the rain. As for now everything is back to normal again. No spots at all. I am very sorry for what happened to your cloth, bcs of the rain, I think there was no way to dry up on any other rope. Yes, unfortunately the staff didn't realize what happened. I apologize for that. As for me not being available on the phone, bcs I was outside the country for important family issues, so either the call does not get through or I can't pick the phone with the Tanzanian number. I am happy that except for this incident, you enjoyed your stay with us. We welcome you, to try us again another time!

We stayed for two nights in one of the family bandas. Kanaani helped us arrange transport to and from the bus station, as well as a guide for hikes. Low water pressure but clean rooms, with good food (especially for TZ.) Staff was very nice and helpful!

Dear Alison, we are happy, that you enjoyed staying with us, and that our staff where able to serve you well. Unfortunatly I was not around, when you came, but as I got told, there have been huge waterproblems, bcs, the supporting line was cut and we had to buy water from far, which explains, why the pressure was low. It was just not enough at that time. Things, which just happen from time to time in Africa. We hope to welcome you again another time with better experience on this issue.

We stayed in March for two nights at Kanaani Resthouse. The Resthouse is located a 5-10 minute car/motocycle ride out of Lushoto town. Driving through the green landscape already gave us a glimpse of the landscape in which Kanaani is situated. Arriving there we were welcomed very warmly by the local ladies, who work there. It seems that all staff that is employed at Kanaani (watchmen, cooks, cleaning ladies) know what customer service means. They were there for us when we needed them, had a friendly greeting and smile for us but highly respected our privacy.
The apartments are situated in a green scenery. All you can see is nature and trees and you can literally smell oxygen here while you sit on the terrace and enjoy the view.
The houses were clean and equipped with all that we wished for and even a little more. It seems that the owner, Sabine, keeps the possible needs of her guests in mind. We found shower caps, cotton buds, sanitary pads, toothbrushes and so on in the bathroom. What a lovely service! There was water, sweets and biscuits in the room when we came and a very warm welcome note with a description about the resthouse and possible activities. We had the opportunity to book Bed and Breakfast or full or half board. Two days half board allowed us to enjoy the delicious meals at Kanaani. Dinner consisted of a variety of dishes, all home-made. Rice, mashed potatoes, different stews with a large variety of vegetables. We sat with other guests on a big table and had long conversations in the evening while enjoying tea.
All day there was hot water for tea (a tea collection of around 15 tea types was there plus coffee) and delicious sweet bites were served during afternoon time.
The breakfast was as well very delicious. Home made bread, pancakes, home-made jams and avocado-dip prepared us well for our long hikes in the mountains.
The owner of Kanaani, Sabine, gave us helpful information and contacts for our hikes. She is very familiar with the area and recreational activities and was always up for a little chat.
The atmosphere at Kanaani was just so peaceful that I had such good night’s rests and woke up with the rising sun with a smile on my face.
It seems that this resthouse is very well managed by socially, economically and ecologically responsible people. You should come and feel the difference! For me it was a perfect weekend outside of the bustling city of Dar es Salaam that was easily manageable on a low budget.

I spent a week as I had gone to run a seminar at the one of the Churches in Lushoto. I have to say that, the reception was excellent, plenty of very fresh food with a variety of choices. I have planned to take my family for a family visit this time. its a home away from home experience. the land scape is very natural and attractive to visitors. the weather is just wonderful and a lot of opportunities to sight see. you cannot want more
