We stayed with a large group of students. The staff were accommodating and allowed us to put 3 children in each of the rooms. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The beds had mosquito nets and there was running water, which sometimes ran out but the staff were quick to assist with a bucket of hot water. The meals were tasty and felt like home-cooking and all prepared fresh. The staff were friendly and the location felt safe.

We stayed only one night because of bad weather but had a warm welcome in this friendly hostel. Good fresh food from their own garden and -what a surprise here in Tanzania- cheese and wine. Made with care and craftmanship.

The St. Eugenes Lodge is run by the Catholic Usambara Sisters and lies on thier lush grounds together with a school and the convent itself. The money from the lodge supports the school. It´s also very nice to have a tour with one of the sisters.

The lodge itself is simple, but clean. The large rooms have double or twin beds with mosquito net, a balcony with a good view and an OK bathroom for east african standards.

Food choices are very limited. But everything was freshly homemade cooked and very tasty. You can also buy veggies on the market and the cook will prepare them for you.

St. Eugenes also offers various tours throughout the region together with a local tour provider. The lodge was a good starting point for our hiking tours with a guide.

Unfortunately no internet available. Staff is friendly and helpfull. But English was not so good. And services could be a bit more professional.

Payment by card is possible, but its dependent on eletricity and internet connection. Take enough cash as there is no international ATM in Lushoto.

Its a beautiful surrounding, all green and very neat gardens.the staff is really nice and they made us the best local food we ever had! Made a two day trip starting from st eugenes, where we could keep our big luggage for the time hiking. They connrct you with good guides wo you can plan your hike with.

We spent four enjoyable nights at St Eugenes. The hostel is nestled in quiet, well-maintained greenery on a slope below the main road, within a girls' boarding school complex containing primary, secondary, and teacher-training college. The accommodations are simple (twin bedded room with closet, private bath, and balcony), safe, clean and comfortable. The restaurant meals are cooked to order, and were of good quality. The staff were wonderfully friendly, as were the many uniformed students, who were eager to practice their English with us. The teachers we met strolling around the property were also welcoming and friendly. WE later stayed at Mullers' Mountain Lodge in the Lushoto area, which had more elegant grounds, but was much more expensive and served less appetizing food. We would happily stay at St Eugene's Lodge again.

I stayed for three nights with another family member and we were very happy with the accommodation. Rooms are simple, spacious and spotlessly clean, with ensuite shower rooms and comfortable beds. The lodge is set in lovely grounds, and is very reasonably priced, with profits going to support the Montessori school and teacher training centre also run by the Usambara sisters. We opted to have all our meals there, which were fine and packed lunches are available. Staff were very kind and friendly and we two women backpackers (one aged 60) felt safe and welcome. We were able to hire a good guide, Ki Bwana, who came to meet us at the Lodge and then collect us there for the two walks we did. As we did not have a car, this was all very convenient. We travelled by bus from Dar, which was long and hot, but interesting and all part of the experience. The walking was superb : wonderful countryside on a grand scale and a climate which in July was cool enough for us to be comfortable. A fantastic experience and I wish we had had longer : the 3, 4 or 5 day walks sounded great.

The room was lovely, super clean with most comfortable bed I have ever slept on! and love they pillows!!!:))) bathroom with shower very clean. Reception was very helpful in directing us to the mountain , so we have great night out as well. After we came back - we found out that on every floor there are water stations with bottles so you can take them to the room! also guest request lockers - if we run out of tea, coffee of milk in the room! Its really like they thought of everything to please your stay! We tried food room service as well and in 20 min was delivered to our room! so happy with our stay that actually was sad to leave!

Interesting experience: staying near a school, with nuns running the hostel. However, service wasn't so good. Barely English spoken, cold showers, water even stopping completely while I just had my shampoo in, no wifi, no help offered for tour planning.
On the plus side: breakfast and bed with mosquito net were fine, and the school grounds look nice. Saw no kids cause they are further down the hill, but heard them singing a lot.
Personally I would stay at Irente Farm next time. Beautiful views, good food, easier contact with and help from staff.
If you do decide to stay at St Eugene: go to them each time 30 mins before, to ask them to turn the warm water on. Apparently it's not standard.

From the moment you arrive, the sisters are lovely to interact with. The room was quite clean and the outside dining area is a great place to hang out and relax after the long drive or a day or hiking.

It wasn't as tranquil as we'd hoped, but only because a huge tour group filled the lodge during the Christmas weekend.

The food was a lot better than some of the other hotels we tried in the area, fresh and well cooked.
