Detailed Reviews
The room and bedding was clean, however, the ensuite wet room had a terrible smell of drains which got worse as time went on. There was no squeegee blade to wipe the wet room floor after a shower, which meant wet feet if you then needed to use the loo or brush teeth. I wouldn't have eaten there or even used the coffee making facilities because the drains smell was so off-putting.
The noise from the bar didn't bother us because we only stayed one night and we were back late ourselves. At 1am, everyone was turfed out promptly so it wasn't an issue.
The whole place felt in dire need of a facelift, from the piles of dust /dirt on the stairs, to the sticky floor in the bar.
Definitely won't return.

I can imagine if you’re going for some drinks and a good night then you’ll be in the right place, however if you actually want to sleep I would look elsewhere. When we arrived we were greeted by a friendly and welcoming staff member (about the only inviting thing about this place). Once we got to the room we were asked if we knew about the late license, which was no where advertised so obviously totally unknown to us. It was quiet until about 9 which we thought we was great news, then the noise came and was relentless until gone 1am. People shouting, dogs barking and someone initiating the dog barking- trying to get some sleep was impossible until after 1:30am. There was a wet towel left from the previous guest in our room, the kettle was filled with limescale and covered in dust. It would’ve be fine for the price you paid, had it not been for the place pretty much being a night club.

We stayed for 1 night and it said includes breakfast if you call cereal and toast only a breakfast. There was no butter or marmalade we had to ask long term resident if there was any as no one was in. I was told it was continental breakfast but that was all there was. We had to boil kettle for coffee or tea no filter coffee. Very poor for the price. Need to really look at this pub and decide if they want it as a hotel as it's definatly not up to standard.

What a nightmare experience. I booked a twin room for my son and myself. On arrival the reception is a pub which smells of stale alcohol.a young lady took us to our room and showed us around, it’s seamed ok for a one night stay. We went back down stairs for food, which they do t do and advised to go to the kebab shop next door. We found a restaurant further into the town and arrived back to the “hotel” at 9pm to find a DJ had set up and was playing loud music. We went up to our room to find the we could here the loud music and that our room actually backed onto the beer garden which was heaving with drunken screaming people. It was an absolute nightmare and couldn’t get any sleep until the music stopped and everyone had left the building. I would say the owner needs to decide whether they want it to be a pub or hotel as it certainly can’t be both. Drink facilities in the room is provided with paper cups and the bathroom is in need of a deep clean….

I would strongly suggest avoiding this hotel at all costs unless you are desperate.
On arrival, we were only warned of the late night disco by a staff member on signing in. The disco was on Saturday and started at 9pm and finished at 1am. The lights in the courtyard are very bright and bedroom 4's window was lit up like it was daylight. The noise was unbearable.
We asked for a cup of tea in the bar as there was only 1 mug in the room when we arrived. The bar man did not have any teabags it would appear, until a man said he had a catering pack of Tetleys in the back of his van. We also had to ask for another toilet roll for the room as the only one provided was around 3/4 empty.
The sash window in bedroom 4 was broken, held up by a block of wood, if you wanted to open it for ventilation. I think that this is a health and safety hazard personally.
The room for breakfast could only be found after the cleaning lady downstairs had to ring someone on her mobile for advice as she did not know where it was.
There is no food available on site apart from a miserable 'continental breakfast' which is basically mothers pride white bread in a packet, a toaster, and mini cereals. A fridge holds only cows milk, some butter in a tub and individual marmalades/jams.
To make a drink for breakfast head back to your room with the kettle and fill it up from your own basin tap, before returning again to the breakfast room. Also remember to bring your mugs from your room with you. The crockery was dirty as was some of the cutlery.
Beds in room 4 had clean sheets but the sheets were straight onto the mattress with no mattress protectors. The beds were uncomfortable to say the least.
The bathroom is a wet room with a glass shower door giving straight onto the bedroom- allowing the other occupant of the room to see someone sitting on the toilet. The shower floor area was stained and there was dirt in the corners by the toilet. The toilet area gets soaked as soon as you use the shower.

There is no car park and there are restrictions on street parking. When I arrived, I wandered freely around the empty bar area trying to find signs of life. Eventually a young girl did appear and checked us in. the room wasn't too bad. Functional, comfortable, en-suite with TV. It is central to Chipping Sodbury but it also doubles as some sort of local, late-night hot spot, so the bass from the speakers and rabble from the crowd in the beer garden, just below our room was able to rise above the TV volume. We were told that breakfast was offered in their sister pub, the Royal Oak and the girl offered to book us in, which we gladly accepted, for a 10am booking. Imagine our surprise when we turned up only to be told that breakfast had finished. Thankfully, the good people at the Royal Oak, heard our pleas and we were served one of the most magnificent breakfasts that we have feasted on for a long time. Breakfast for 2 came to £27.10 Room at the Portcullis was £65 for 2.

This was my local in the 90's. It went the wrong way for many years and now under new ownership. Same family who own The Royal Oak across the road. They're in the process of refurbishing the whole pub including rooms. Quick tour around, everything is being done to a new modern spec. Plans for a self contained room for the disabled in the progress before Covid-19 struck. What they've achieved so far considering the current dramas, good job all round.
Now the Sunday Roast. Reasonably priced and the cauliflower cheese was crunchy and super tasty. Not the usual runny slop you get. Definitely worth another visit when you hear the calibre of the Chef the pub has taken.

First please be aware that most the reviews on this site are for the pub it's self and there are very few for the actual hotel (even fewer that are positive). I would like to clarify that I had no problems with the staff during our stay but when I contacted them after for help resolving our issues I have heard nothing.
The room was small but nice however the main issue is that it is over the courtyard for the pub. This would be okay if it was a small quiet local village put...but it is definitely not. The pub was open till 1 am with loud music playing from a DJ deck all night, all I could hear was shouting from outside and people constantly vomiting. It was absolutely ridiculous and then on the next morning I was awoken at 8 am by people working outside bashing and hammering things. To make things worse there seemed to be no covid protocol inside the pub and we had to travel through it to get to our rooms. (the reason we had booked a hotel was that we were visiting my Grandma so this put us in a lot of danger). This place should not be a hotel and I would strongly advise against staying here especially at weekends if you want to be able to sleep.

This was one of the best roasts I have had!
Beautiful presentation, very generous serving, tasted delicious and great value for money.
Roast beef was tender, even though we’d requested it well done. The stuffing was delicious!
Will definitely be back!

This is not a Hotel, it’s the local party pub, filled with teens to 20’s. Nowhere on the booking does it state the late license or that it is like the local teens nightclub. On arrival we were greeted by a member of staff who was pleasant and showed us to our room which overlooked the outside area. We were told on arrival that there was a disco until 1 am. We arrived back at 11.pm on our first night, the music finished precisely at 1am, however by the time everyone had left and the lights outside turned off it was past 2am. Not good for an early start. On our second night we arrived back at 11.45 knowing that the music would continue again into the early hours. Unfortunately there were other guests now using other rooms where they had to go past the thin wall behind our head board (room 2) meaning that if they were heavy footed and bumping into the wall it felt like they were crashing in.
The room itself was generally clean however plenty of dust and cobwebs. The en suite is a small wet room, however the sink was so close to the door it was difficult bending over the sink to wash. The smell from the drain was absolutely disgusting and not apparent initially as the smell of bleach was overpowering. If your expectations are low and you want just a room to sleep after 2am this place is ideal. However if you would like a good nights sleep, book at your own risk. This place should come with a warning
