Situated only 7km from the friendly township of Taumarunui, down the incredible Forgotten World Highway, lies Omaka Lodge, a boutique bed & breakfast venue in the heart of New Zealand’s Forgotten World. The short drive out from town follows the Whanganui River and is a beautiful scenic tour at any time of the year. At the end of a tree lined sealed driveway, you’ll find Omaka Lodge and its beautiful mature gardens. Well positioned on the crest of a hill, with magnificent views of Herlihy’s Bluff and Mount Hikurangi, this wonderful venue offers total privacy and seclusion. Situated amidst working farmland, the Lodge and expansive gardens are surrounded by the sights and sounds of everyday country life, where sheep and cattle dot rolling green-pastured hills and valleys that echo to the sound of never-ending birdsong.

This is a gem. Tranquility, comfort, beautiful nz scenery, delicious home-cooked food and hosts whose passion is to share their home and hospitality with their guests.

We loved every moment here, and decided to leave the car unused for the day, to just sit around and enjoy. We had no need of lunch - the wonderful cooked breakfast had set us up for the day. Our host visited us mid-afternoon to offer more coffee. In the early evening they had a tray ready with wine glasses and plates for the snacks we’d brought.

They will cook a meal for you, or set up a table to transform your takeaways into an almost formal dinner!

The included breakfast is substantial, with a selection of delicious homemade jams and spreads, but the $25 cooked option was one of the best we have tasted in any cafe or hotel.

Then there’s the garden, pool, library, nearby walks, ... This is so much more than a stop at one end of the Forgotten World Highway.

Needless to say, we will be back, and we’ll be recommending the Lodge to a few select friends. Thank you, Chris and Scott, for a memory.

There are not enough words to describe the Omaka Lodge, but I will attempt to describe the beauty and eloquence of OL in this inadequate review.
The lodge is something out of Lord of the Rings. No, I'm not saying Omaka Lodge is a hobbit house for smaller people, but I'm talking about the sheer beauty and majesty of the lodge. Guys, the OL is so darn beautiful, I nearly cried. From the garden to the pastures to the rolling hills, you can't help but feel a certain tranquility and pensiveness that comes out when you stay at the lodge. As if the bucolic photo-worthy background isn't breathtaking enough, Chris and Scott have outdone themselves with their landscape design and indoor furnishings. The indoor amenities are something out of a spa resort, everything perfectly manicured to provide a relaxing experience. You can tell so much love, labor, and creativity was molded into their home and the land it sits on. By the time you check-out, you feel a certain sadness for leaving. By the way, don't pass on the chance to try Chris and Scott's homemade scones and tea, it is fantastic and great to munch on while exploring their property. Also, get to know OL's host, they are friendly, funny, respectful, compassionate about their community, and great to talk to just about anything. Honestly, if you don't stay at Omaka Lodge, you are missing out on a real gem and an experience. I took a picture of the Omaka Lodge before we left and I still look at it from time to time to because of the beautiful memories we made. If we are ever back here again, we will definitely be staying at Omaka Lodge. Kia Ora.

My husband and I had the privilege of Staying at Omaka Lodge for 2 nights a couple of weeks ago. What an amazing home Scott and Chris have created and what fantastic hosts they both are. We were fortunate enough to be able to upgrade to the Loft. This little home away from home was an absolute delight with every little covered. The ensuite bathroom was simply incredible with his and hers basins and a twin shower, together with beautiful toiletries.
Nothing was too much trouble for Scott and Chris and they went out of their way to make our stay exceptional. On arrival we were given home made cake straight out of the oven. We had the option of either eating in with other guests or dining out at one of the suggested restaurants, which were every bit as good as recommended. Breakfast consisted of a range of produce, many of which were produced from the farm itself. Home made muesli and bread and too many jams and other spreads to mention.
For two days we lived like Kings. The only regret being that our stay wasn't longer. Omaka Lodge is truly a slice of paradise set amongst beautifully tended gardens. It truly is a tribute to the hard work put in by Scott and Chris and we would highly recommend Omaka Lodge to anyone wanting a place to stay with that wow factor.
Thanks so much Scott and Chris for sharing your home with us. We were truly blessed.

We were recommended to play golf at Taumaranui, and hit upon this accommodation which proved to be fabulous! After a warm welcome with a cup of tea and ginger shortbread, and a stroll around their stunning and well-mulched garden, we savoured a delicious candl=llit dinner, overlooking the garden as the sun set. Then a sleep in a very comfortable bed, and a yummy breakfast. Chris and Scott were wonderful hosts - and resulted in a memorable experience that couldn't be faulted! Hopefully, will get back soon. (The golf was good, but not as memorable as this!)

A perfect start to our Forgotten World Adventure. Chris and Scott the hosts are very friendly and welcoming. Our stay included dinner and a continental breakfast with food provided mostly from their own garden. We stayed in the loft - a beautifully decorated private self sufficient area. Designed for couples rather than a family. Highly recommend!

We spent one night here before we did the Timber Trail and we just felt so incredibly spoiled by our hosts Chris and Scott. Nothing was too much trouble, they have such a knack of making you feel like you’re staying with family. The beds were warm and comfortable, bathroom impeccably clean, breakfast was delicious (served extra early so we wouldn’t have to rush to meet our shuttle). I loved Milly the dog too who was so friendly. This lodge is an absolute gem and a must stay for anyone passing through the area. Thank you again for making our stay so memorable and enjoyable!

We stayed overnight at Omaka Lodge before traversing the Lost Highway to Stratford and then to New Plymouth. We were very glad that we did.

Our expectations were high (in the light of other positive reviews) but were exceeded by the experience. The house is beautiful and Scott and Chris are extraordinary hosts. Everything in the house is high quality, in good taste and selected to make a guest's stay comfortable and relaxing. The hospitality was truly outstanding - the pleasant and charming company of our hosts and the wonderful food, including fresh baking and an extraordinary array of home made jams and spreads at breakfast.

The grounds and garden are beautiful, and great for spending a relaxing time with great views. Even the pets are worthy of comment - a dog and 2 cats, all of whom are comfortable around the guests . One of the cats is the largest we have ever seen but so relaxed and friendly.

The worst thing was leaving the following day when we would have liked to stay longer. We have decided that we will definitely return for a longer stay in the near future.

Sadly we only stayed for one night, we will definitely will be back. This is a lovely home in a rural setting surrounded by beautiful gardens. The rooms are tastefully furnished, ours had an ensuite, every luxury you would want. The hosts Chris and Scott are so accommodating and put on an amazing breakfast, jams and jellies all made from their own garden, likewise the fruit. I would recommend this as a must stay. Unfortunately we didn't have the time to really enjoy what Omaka Lodge offered and the weather was not so kind on this trip but still a great experience.

Chris and Scott have created a very welcoming environment for a fellow traveling on his own. Their hospitality is engaging and effortless. The rooms are designed with a keen eye for color and texture and, importantly, views. The view from my secluded terrace looked across manicured hedges and down a long water feature and across the valley to the dormant volcano in the distance. As if I was transported to the time of a Merchant-Ivory film, A Room With A View.

The three-course dinner was as elegant and it was delicious. The roasted half chicken on a bed of turmeric with freshly picked vegetables from the garden was savory and satisfying. Then, the exquisite Pavlova was presented for dessert. The level of service and hospitality is top tier so much so I cancelled my stay at another establishment and spent another two nights at Omaka Lodge. Chris and Scott made my stay wholly enjoyable. I had their joyous company when I wanted as well as space for quiet contemplation when I wanted. I highly recommend all who seek an extraordinary stay in the country to go and be pampered in the best way.
