We are a Fishing/Farm lodge in the remote Mokai Valley right on the Rangitikei River. Trout fishing right at your door step. Gorgeous accommodation and amazing scenery. Very quiet and private with own spa pool and the trout fishing is amazing. Enjoy a scenic raft trip or just enjoy the stunning scenery.

Such a beautiful place. We did the scenic rafting with our dog and that was a great day out. The lodge was immaculate and had a great view of the river. Loved the hot tub. The deer and pig were friendly. Such lovely hosts, too. This is such a beautiful part of NZ.

Stayed for a week fly fishing. The fishing was great. But it was more than fishing. We fished in a gorge most days with steep sides, water falls and fern gardens. Then there was the white water rafting when moving down the river, I had a ball. Fabulous hospitality, great food (lamb roast was my favourite). thanks, Phil from WA.

My friend Mark and I decided to go to New Zealand for a fly fishing trip of about 3 weeks in length. Mark had been in New Zealand many time over the previous 20 or so years and highly recommended we stay at least part of our time at Tarata Fishaway Lodge. I'm glad I agreed to it! Normally, I fish on my own without guides, but Mark said that Stephen was probably the best guide in the world. How could I say no to that? On our arrival, Trudi greeted Mark with a warm hug as if he were family, and I suppose after 20 years of coming back, he is. I told Trudi that I wanted some of that and she obliged immediately. That was my introduction. Tarata Fishaway Lodge is truely a family operation, but it was evident that Trudi runs the show. Stephen is the head guide and takes care of the farm. Stephen and Trudi's daughters also take part. We were guided one day by McKayla (sp?) and even that wa a treat. We did not partake of breakfast at the lodge but on the days we floated the Ragitikei River, guided by either Stephen or McKayla, lunch was provided. We did however have dinner in the main dining room of the lodge each night, and was a treat to do so. Home cooked meals and served just like at home, made me feel welcome and treated like family. The accommodations were not fancy or luxurious, but clean, functional, and relaxing. The view out the front sliding glass door was amazing and the deer in the paddock nearby were ever curious as to what we were doing. Oh, and the fishing! We caught numerous large fish, Rainbows and Browns, each day. These folks have access to some great stretched of the river, where it is very difficult for anybody else to access. It's almost as if it is their own private river - and wow do they know how to fish it! If I come back to New Zealand, I would definitely stay again, probably near the end of my trip and for a shorter time, only because I'm such a cheap skate. Do yourselves a favor and consider staying at the Tarata FIshaway Lodge.…

A family owned and operated prestigious fishing and tourist lodge set in a majestic environment. - remote back country style fishing which interestingly is close to civilization. - very experienced safety conscious fishing guides who know and respect the rivers. - excellent, private, and fully serviced accommodation. - top quality homestead meals if you so choose. The combination of rafting and fishing in this environment is a must for enthusiastic adventurous fishing people. Follow the detailed advice of the guides and you will be sure to catch fish.

Our much anticipated return to Tarata Fishaway post Covid restrictions was once again a wonderful week of fishing and fun with the lovely Mattock family. Stephen and Trudi are wonderful, welcoming hosts who give you the best possible experience. Great food and company. This was our third visit to this property located in the most unique, extraordinary, spectacular location. We enjoy the privacy, comfort and views staying in their retreat cottage and the expert guided river fishing with Stephen and Mikayla. Can highly recommend for a relaxed holiday or fishing experience.

Best place to have a getaway from the busy life. We always end up coming here when we want to have a great stay close to nature and scenic beauty. I like bringing my friends, parents and relatives whenever they visit New Zealand. HIghly recommend to experience this place and Trudy's family hospitality.

Having traveled and fly fished all over New Zealand, I can say with confidence that the fishing at Tarata is as good as you will find. Beautiful crystal clear water, big fish and the best guides around. Their use of rafts to provide drift boat style fishing is exceptionally unique in New Zealand and provides comfortable access to remote and lightly fished areas. Stephen and Mikayla will put you on the fish and coach you through playing and landing that trophy of a lifetime. They are also great company and wonderful companions for a day on the water. But the fishing is only part of the reason to book a stay at Tarata. The beautiful, spotlessly-clean and well-appointed accommodations are set in dramatic locations where you can relax and enjoy the stunning scenery of the central North Island. Evening meals feature delicious home-cooked meals with many home-grown ingredients. It all feels like a relaxed family dinner to cap off a wonderful day. Book a stay at Tarata and let the Mattock family show you why New Zealand is such a wonderful place.…

It was my tenth visit to Tarata for the fantastic flyfishing. I had tried other NZ trout destinations, but nothing beats this experience and the warmth of the hospitality. Rafting the Rangitikei is magnificent and then add the rainbow fishery with the most experienced and hard-working guides I have experienced lifts it to a place I return to again and again. Cheers Dan
