Travellers' Choice
The basis of the River Valley Experience is what happens outside the Lodge. A family run business now into its 3rd generation of raft guides, River Valley started as a rafting company on a family farm, in the back blocks of Taihape. With one of the world's top half day Grade 5 rafting trips literally on the doorstep, it was a natural progression. A horse trekking stables was added over time, and it is these two adventurous activities, rafting the beautiful Rangitikei River, and exploring the magnificent hill country which is at core of River Valley. River Valley Lodge is an Adventure Lodge. It was built as a base for rafting and horse back riding, and this has not changed. What has changed is the clientele! The Lodge caters for young backpackers after an adrenaline fueled Grade 5 rafting trip, through to veteran mature adventurers, with an accommodation mix from bunk rooms to en-suited riverside suites. The Lodge restaurant and cafe serves a selection of fresh country style food, much not only prepared on site, but also grown in the extensive vegetable gardens. If shopping and cell phone reception are critical to your daily existence, then River Valley is certainly not the place for you.

Fantastic from first contact to farewell. What an amazing, highly personalised, experience with Nicola and her gorgeous horses in a stunning location. The unforgettable three days of riding alone would have been enough for a glowing review, but the wonderful lodge staff and outstanding food made this stay at River Valley truly magic.

We had the most amazing experience with these guys . From the start of the email exchanges these guys went above an beyond . Staff are just amazing and made us feel like we was at home . The organically grown food that went into all Home cooked meals was outstanding . The Cabins and facilites were the bomb , comfy beds , clean and everything that you needed was to hand . These guys rock . Felt like we had known them all for years . The rafting was memories for life and our guides were so knowledgable always felt we were in very safe hands all the way through . So many Laughs an Varns and we cannot wait to come back here again . Love love love this place , actually one of my fav places in NZ XXX

Perfect base for kayaking the rangitikei. Very accomodating and jacked up shuttle drivers - much appreciated. Duvets, sheets and pillows provided in bunk room. Bit of a mission of a drive to get there!

We just had a fabulous 2 days at River Valley Lodge, 12.5 years after our last visit. As before, the location, atmosphere, food, room and staff were excellent. In 2008, we did a kayak trip on the beautiful Rangitikei River. This time we did the more laid back scenic raft trip. Both are wonderful. Thanks to our great guide, Matt, who did all the work. We really enjoyed the trip and conversation (water rights, US politics and history, travel ...). This place and their guided day trips are highly recommended. #rivervalleylodge

We stayed over for a night en route travelling further South. It’s way off the beaten track but worth making the journey. The staff were brilliant and the food was excellent. Plenty of room choice and the communal area around the fireplace was lovely. Enjoy......
