A family run business now into its 3rd generation of raft guides, River Valley started as a rafting company on a family farm, in the back blocks of Taihape. With one of the world's top half day Grade 5 rafting trips literally on the doorstep, it was a natural progression. A horse trekking stables was added over time, and it is these two adventurous activities, rafting the beautiful Rangitikei River, and exploring the magnificent hill country which is at core of River Valley. The Lodge caters for a mix of clientele, with an accommodation mix from deluxe riverside ensuite rooms, to bunk rooms. There are also 2 meeting rooms available for hire, for corporate use or private events and weddings. The Lodge restaurant and cafe serves a selection of fresh farm-to-table food, much not only prepared on site, but also grown in the extensive vegetable gardens. If shopping and cell phone reception are critical to your daily existence, then River Valley is certainly not the place for you.

Spur of the moment adventure so we did not partake in the whitewater rafting or horse riding. This lodge ( think backpackers with a couple of very nice en-suite rooms rather than luxury lodge) was great. Friendly staff and great roast evening meal. All eco friendly and locally sourced, vegetables grown onsite and their free range hens provided great eggs. Right at the rivers edge with large swimming hole, spa, sauna, pétanque and volleyball courts. WiFi provided. Family run with a conservation ethos. Well worth visiting.

We had the most amazing experience with these guys . From the start of the email exchanges these guys went above an beyond . Staff are just amazing and made us feel like we was at home . The organically grown food that went into all Home cooked meals was outstanding . The Cabins and facilites were the bomb , comfy beds , clean and everything that you needed was to hand .
These guys rock . Felt like we had known them all for years . The rafting was memories for life and our guides were so knowledgable always felt we were in very safe hands all the way through . So many Laughs an Varns and we cannot wait to come back here again . Love love love this place , actually one of my fav places in NZ XXX

My visit to River Valley was a surprise from my lovely husband of 43 years. He had been to River Valley with work mates 10 years previously and had often said how good it was. Good, is an understatement because the whole experience is extremely good. The commitment to making you feel really welcome comes from the whole family from the minute you drive in. The Riverside room was so comfortable, especially the heated floor in the bathroom. The food was extremely good and the fresh produce a real treat. Everything home made down to the spicey sauces. Yum. Sitting around the big fire pit with a wine was very easy to get used to.
Then came the grade 5 rafting. What an exciting few hours, and it was a privilage to go down that beautiful river. Next time I would like to do the Grade 3 downstream, apparently its extremely good.
If you just want to be lazy, the petanque and outdoor chess right beside the river is very relaxing. River Valley Lodge is a tribute to the whole family who own and run this very special piece of NZ.

Highly recommend River Valley to all individuals and families looking for an absolutely wonderful experience and opportunity to enjoy the beauty and tranquility of this country at it’s very best..

Spent three days with the lovely people of River Valley who were just fantastic sharing with us the joy and majesty of this incredibly special part of Aotearoa.

My wife and I with the kids arrived at River Valley meeting up with my in-laws ready to stay one night in the lodging’s and then embark on a two day scenic river guided trip. River valley is a tribute to the lovely family that through the generations have saved this piece of paradise to share with guests and save for future generations.

The calm of the lodge and accommodation is only accompanied by the sound of the river and gentle winds that blow through. The kids enjoyed playing outdoor chess, exploring the lodge and most of all jumping into the river. The food, vegetables home grown, was both wonderful and for a family of 6, plentiful all accompanied by very ‘special’ homemade sauces.

We then spent the next two days on what can only be described as an absolute jaw dropping river rafting trip. The scenery on its scale needs to be experienced as it takes your breath away. From first-hand experience I know the wonder and beauty of the New Zealand bush and forests but travelling on the river looking up at the majestic walls of the canyons was almost spiritual. Our two expert guides were amazing! They kept us informed the whole way, safe and especially for the kids well entertained not to mention well fed ;)

If you’ve never been to River Valley, do and if you have go back again taking friends and or family as they will thank you for it!

We are already planning out next River Valley adventure and will be taking other friends with us.

River Valley is an absolute treasure!

Attended a weekend event at River Valley Lodge, arrived after dark Friday night to the lovely relaxing sounds of the river nearby and an amazingly delicious meal with lots of beautiful salads and curries to choose from. The next night's dinner was also delicious as was lunch. Slept wonderfully in such a peaceful location with the ruru calling and the river murmuring outside. Wonderful hosts - thank you River Valley Lodge.

My wife and I just spent 3 days and nights at River Valley. We were very fortunate to secure "The Bus" as our accommodation, the bus is located in a very private spot overlooking the river with a 10 meter walk down a staircase to the river. The accom comes with your own private toilet and shower/bath block that overlooks the river, the river side is open so you are literally in the wild as you bathe or shower. A good romantic private getaway.
We took the scenic rafting trip in a kayak and this was incredible, the scenery and experience was unforgettable, Lunch on the river with a very friendly guide and one other couple.
The meals are fantastic and the lodge is a beautiful place.
Fantastic Sauna as well
Highly recommended and cant wait till we can go again

We found River Valley Lodge when looking for a short stay to unwind as a couple. What a great pick! We pre-booked the dinners and breakfasts and felt thoroughly spoiled by Miranda's amazing cooking. The format of "trust us, we will pick the food for you" was actually really great and each meal was delicious. She was able to cater for food intolerances.

We did the half day rafting with Hazel and Alex. What amazing views! Hazel was an excellent instructor and both she and Alex were fun, knowledgeable and kind.

The Lodge was not that busy when we were there which I found surprising as it is a wee gem and well worth the visit to relax, raft, eat and sit in the spa pool opposite the waterfall. The staff are welcoming and friendly.

Thanks team, we will be back.

A wonderful 2 nights away, a comfy bed with the sound of the babbling river close by. Fine food that was a delight in every mouthful, where the chef takes the freshest ingredients and creates a different menu daily, true artistry. My had a massage and masseur, she says knew what she needed immediately easing the pressure in her back and stress from her shoulders.
The spa over the looking was wonderful.

Having visited before, we were excited to be back at river valley lodge.

The place is in a remote location, with beautiful views of the river and the mountains.

The food that we had during our stay was amazing, so nice to eat home cooked style food all made with fresh local and home grown ingredients, the large communal dining room and bar area has a lovely feel unique feel.

My girlfriend was booked to do the horse riding, but unfortunately due to the weather this was cancelled a couple of days before we arrived. The staff were very helpful and we decided to book on to the whitewater rafting instead and this turned out to be a brilliant and must do experience!

Our favourite place to visit on the north island and I’m sure we will be back!

Not sure where to begin! I loved it all. The setting is stunning, the River Valley Team were so welcoming and accommodating and the vibe is super relaxing and chilled. My room - set into the bush and close enough to still hear the river, was amazing! Pillows and bed were very comfortable and warm, the bathroom was next level with its glass roof - the view of stars at night was breath taking! I spent the day rafting/kayaking and our guide was great and the scenery was just beautiful, I even got to stand under one of the many waterfalls which was a real buzz. The Lodge is the hub with it's very cool dining room is where the kitchen prepares beautifully fresh and very tasty meals each day. The River Valley team (family of 3 generations) have really thought of everything to make their little corner of the world very special and next time I am heading back with the whole family!
