As we were just wanting to overnight in Taihape, we decided to take a chance on the cheap rate at Hotel Gretna. The receptionist was cheerful & helpful. The room was clean with attractively presented towels on the bed. No en-suite though - shared bathrooms. A kitchen/dining room was available to make tea/coffee & where we ate the breakfast we’d taken along. There’s also a lounge with TV (no remote) plus a selection of books. We chose the roast dinner for our evening from the good selection on the menu. One downside was the traffic noise through the night. Suggest asking for a room away from the road.

Needed a stopover in Taihape while on a roadtrip. Gretna hotel is a basic but pleasant hotel that provides good value for money. Decent sized rooms and comfortable beds. Plenty of heating. Bathrooms are clean. Hot water takes a while to flow in the shower. Staff are friendly and helpful. Wifi access was a bit spotty - couldn't get a good signal in our room. Overall, would recommend for anyone looking to spend a night or two in Taihape.

After a quick meal on our travels and decided to give the Gretna Hotel a chance. A bit rough looking, but were greeted with friendly staff and locals. Had the steak burger (totally delicious n juicy), chicken burger (good) and the lamb chops (perfectly cooked & yum) with a nice jug of cider to wash it down. All big servings, Staff couldn't be more friendly or helpful. Definately worth a stop at this friendly local

A break in our journey stopped us mid way in Taihape. The room rate is very good. The room was cosy with the heater, The bed comfortable and the shower and toilets across the hall were very clean.
We had a couple of drinks in the bar and talked to a few locals too. A very friendly bunch of folks and the bar prices are very realistic compared to many city hotels.
The roast of the day was on the restaurant menu and very tasty.
Overall, we'd stay there again.

Initial Service was friendly when entering. We ordered Steaks, Burgers & kids meal and all were served hot, delicious and well presented. Chef of the night was very kind and friendly, we’d eat her food again. Enjoyed the music and quiet atmosphere. Thank you 😋

Booked in at the last minute. Reasonable price considering it was a long weekend. Nice large room with ensuite. Clean and very comfortable. Washcloth (flannel) was even provided. Very accessible to the town centre (across the road).

We stopped for a night on our way to Wellington. The service was great and the room was clean with a big comfortable bed with warm douvets. The room was a bit cold so we asked to an extra heater which we got. The shower was great with good pressure. We went down to the bar for a drink and after just a moment one of the locals invited us to join them. They were absolutely great and made us feel so welcome! We spent the evening talking to them and it was one of our best nights travelling around New Zeeland! We had a good night's sleep. They also have a kitchen we could use which was great.
The next morning we had a great breakfast made by the owners daughter and a nice talk with the owner. We spent the morning in Taihape before we drove on. We even threw a gumboot before we left town!
We would definitely stay here again! A great and hospitable place!

3 of us stayed here while travelling on motorcycles. We parked our motorcycles around the back of the hotel behind a locked gate. Pretty secure.
The rooms were very clean, crisp clean sheets and fresh smelling.
We had 2 rooms. 1 with 2 singles and 1 with 1 single right opposite the shared toilets upstairs. Also very clean. Great pressure in the showers too.
We ate at the hotel to enjoy the whole vintage style experience. We all had roast of the day which was just like mums Kiwi home roast.
Played pool and had a few drinks. Slept well in the comfortable beds. This hotel has been redecorated in some parts to suit the era.
I noticed when we were leaving in the morning, the windows were being cleaned, the banisters dusted, just how they would've when the hotel was built.
We loved it and will stay again when we are in the area. Total cost $140 for accommodation. $12 for small roast and $18 for large. Restaurant opens at 6pm. Worth even stopping for passing travellers for a meal. Great value and country hospitality.

We stopped at Gretna in September 2017 as an overnight stay before a day's skiing - for which it is perfectly convenient (about an hour to Turoa skifield). The room was very tidy and frankly better appointed than we had any right to expect, with high ceilings and some remaining original features.

However, here's the but: We booked and paid in advance via Wotif, but when we turned up at the Hotel there was a note to "pay on arrival" on our booking - and the same on all the bookings on the same page. When I told them we had paid in advance, they said it was pay on arrival because they never charge until people turn up in case they don't (????). My phone was flat by this time so I couldn't check my emails and I presumed I could have made a mistake, so I paid but kept the receipt.

Guess who was charged twice?

When I finally got onto Wotif customer service (the phone line kept me waiting indefinitely listening to La Isla Bonita on repeat, hardly the best example of Madonna's oeuvre) on email support@customercare.wotif.com they were actually very helpful (astonishing). Gretna denied the double paying and said they just take an imprint of a credit card and I had made a mistake. But no! I knew I had paid on a debit card and thankfully I had that receipt, which I emailed to Wotif and then was eventually reimbursed one of the payments.

Golly, though, could the Gretna be any more tricksy? Are they devious, or simply incompetent? It's a pity though because the actual room was fine and at a good rate. Way to shoot yourselves in the foot, Gretna!

we were travelling home from Wellington and decided that this was a good place to stop with close outside parking for our 'four-legged' friends in the back. A smattering of locals in the Pub section who were very welcoming to us, we ordered our meals, found a vacant table in the dining room and only waited for a short time when our meals arrived. WOW, what a size :-) We were there for the food not the 'beds'.
Meals ordered were Fish and salad and Lamb chops and salad. Giant portions :-)
