Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

It was getting dark and i had not seen a hotel for a while when i arrived in Urenui. As you enter town there is a large sign for the hotel on SH 3. You book the hotel in the pub, with the brusque bar manager, and are directed to 4 (?) small concrete units on the next road up. As near as i could tell i was the only one there.

The room is good sized and equipped for easy meals. It is clean, no bugs, hair, etc. but smells like nobody had been in it for years. It was that stale, dank smelled that bothered me the most until i tried a bed. The mattresses on the 2 single beds are awful and the linen smells stale.

All the cords for TV, kettle, alarm clock, microwave, non-working heater are all hanging down next to the lone plug on that wall. You mix and match what you want to use.

Since the heater was broken and the pub was closed when i discovered that it was a bit cool sleeping. since it is right off SH 3 be prepared for heavy truck noise.

If it is raining, the water drains along the covered area in front of the door and there is no easy access to your car because of the physical set up.

Every backpackers i have stayed in was more inviting and half the price (60$/night). I just came in slept and had coffee in the morning and felt relieved as i left. this is not a room I felt comfortable spending any time in.

If you are in this area of the Taranaki make sure you have you sleeping arrangements done in advance since there is only one other hotel in town.

This was a very old motel, again no central heating. This was our third motel in New Zealand and we were getting used to sleeping in our coats. The hot air blowers took the chill off after hours of being on, we wore more in bed than out, there was electric blanket on the beds but as soon as they were turned off they got cold. I was pinching my partners thick winter socks to wear in bed and still wearing my coat. There was lots of condensation all the time in the bathroom and, well all over the place. The bathroom really needed the window open while showering but it was too cold, the floor was dangerously slippy and towels were never properly dry, oh yes the loo roll was damp too! Three uncomfortably cold nights there. The young girl in the office came to see to us after us ringing the bell and waiting a while, at about 10 in the morning in her pyjamas. She was not awake, I asked her if she would let my son in if he returned before us. She gave me the spare key for him but then they couldn't get in the room to clean!

The Urenui Hotel offers four small 'units' next to the pub itself.

When i first arrived in my room i noticed i was provided with a clean refreshing room with all basic cooking facilities, eg. Kettle, toaster, fridge.

As they are units at a pub, i wasn't really expecting much in the way of rooms ect but found it to be a welcoming experience. The staff were very friendly welcoming.

As the Manager stays on site I was able to call him on the contact number provided in the room, for spare linen as it was abit cold. He did not make a fuss about it being late in the and i was very very pleased.

The shower was amazing, and the bathroom was clean.

I did find the mattress to be a bit worn, although i had no problem with sleep.

I also enjoyed the fire and warm inviting feeling that the hotel itself offers.

I would recommend this place for travelers whom are looking for a cheap friendly place to stop over on their journey as it provides basic necessity's for the everyday traveler.

The two things that were good were location and the room was clean when we arrived. The not so good included milk was in a jug (we bought our own so we knew it was safe) - first time ever having it ina jug which they filled; tea , coffee and milk not replaced during our 3 night stay; towels replaced but first day just left on bed not in bathroom; ran out of toilet paper had to get some; no cleaning done during our 3 day stay by hotel although rubbish (toilet and kitchen) emptied third day; dish cloth looked like it had been there for 50 years - we bought one as did not trust the one they had in room - dish washing liquid also been there for ages - it was all lumpy. The bed was a bit hard and the pillows too flat. If choosing to stay would recommend you take your own pillow. No wardrobe for clothes just a rail by kitchen table to hang clothes. Would not stay again and as such could not recommend it.

Yet another great family holiday beside the river close to the beach. The weather didn't play ball but the good times still rolled on. Golf course was nice and quiet for a change. Urenui is a gem for families.
