Detailed Reviews
We stayed here for four nights.
It's a camp ground where time has stood still which we don't mind We were on a powered caravan site, plenty of room to set up gazebo etc.
What I did have a problem with was the toilets were not the cleanest.
Lovely views, very close to the beach.
We took our 2 dogs with us which are allowed but need to be put on a leash when walking around the camp area.
Awakino Hotel 2 mins drive away, they also allow well mannered dogs in the garden bar area.
Nearest supermarket is about 45 mins away so pack well.
The local cafe stocks a few items which are expensive as we found out when we ran out of bread, which had an expiry date on it for the next day.
Great place to go to relax, we will be going back again.

We had a tent site for two nights. Great spot - close to the beach.
The style of the camp is from another era but still very functional , without frills.
We found the toilets and showers to be very clean.
The showers are token operated (you get the tokens from the camp office)The hot water only runs for a couple of minutes or so though - which is fair enough but its hard to keep track of time and you get a shock when it suddenly goes cold.
The kitchen was well equipped with stove, microwave, toaster, fridges and a freezer (separate freezer round the back for bait and fish)
The Awakino pub is just down the road if you don't want to cook
Definitely family friendly - great to see kids around on their bikes etc.
Great spot to base yourself for a few days relaxing and fishing or to break up the journey between Taranaki and the Waikato.

Lovely location on the beach with views to Mt Egmont on a clear day. The powered sites are a reasonable size and there is a dump station and water. On the down side the toilets are very old and grubby and haven’t seen a good scrubbing for a long time. There was soap and paper towels but that was it.
Views of the ocean are very limited with a sand dune running along most of the camp.
$40 for 2 people for a powered site was ok but would expect clean toilets and some maintenance at least.☹️

We have always been wanting to stay here and this time on our way to New Plymouth we did. WE got a nice beachfront powered site for our motorhome and immediately went for a walk along the ocean front. We love this area, a stunning wild beach with a view to Mt Taranaki in the distance and hardly anyone there.
This small holiday park is pure kiwiana, authentic, not flash, but comfortable, affordable and has so much character. The manager was friendly and helpful. If you want a good slice of NZ holidays as they used to be this is the place to go. It's a treasure. Fabulous sunset and sunrise.

We spent a night in an en-suite cabin - it was very comfortable, spacious with everything we needed (take your own top bedding). I loved hearing the sea pounding metres away, walked down the beach to the right and found a waterfall emptying onto the beach. Small camp right on the beach, pretty gardens and loved the coloured cabins.

the owners and their brother are really gruff, not welcoming at all, they were pretty unfriendly and seemed to appear from round corners at random times. we stayed in the tourist flat #2. the flat is spacious, and very old, which would have been fine, but it was very shabby and neglected. we couldn't lock the door as the latch was broken, while on the surface it looked clean, the place was actually quite filthy. the shower was so dirty i got a scrub pad and wrote "clean" in the filth and grime on the shower walls. the toilet and shower mat have not been changed in forever, mouse poo all over the dishes in the cupboards, the fridge was grotty and i would not recommend extending the dining table as there is all manner of ground in filth in the extending bit. the stove/oven is dodgy with elements that turn off all the time. the outside of the unit was green with slime and unwashed dirt. leaves piled up on paths, and generally neglected and uncared for. the owners took great offense when i pointed these things out, especially about the shower, she said, "it's just like that". it's a real shame. overall our stay was nice because we love being together, and the beach is beautiful and we had it to ourselves a lot of the time. the camp was practically empty and we definitely won't be going back.

Called a month in advance to get a great cabin. Booked and it was fine. Needed to double check 2 nights b4 due to go, and wasn't booked in. Put in a crappy container cabin, it leaked, smelt bad, and worst of all, our 1st night the light in kitchen went out, asked them to come and fix it the next morning. They never did. 2 nights in a row of cooking in the dark, third night the power goes out all together but only in our cabin. Asked for a refund for one night, was told I was being unreasonable and got a measly few bucks back. Awakino is a gorgeous place, unfortunately the owners just don't seem to care about their campers as much as they should.

You get what you pay for here, and you need to understand that you are staying in a very "old-school" kiwi campground. We stayed in the 'pink' cabin (for $65). It has what you need, but expect formica tabletops, very old decor and a musty smell. The bed was comfortable enough.
The location is fantastic, right on the wild west coast. It's a shame that you're not allowed bonfires on the beach, but understandable I guess.
The customer service was pretty poor though. When I rang and booked they weren't particularly friendly and asking for an email confirmation of my booking was treated like I'd asked for a red carpet to be laid out!
They agreed that we could have our dog there (on a lead at all times) and we understood that we weren't allowed the dog in the cabin so despite it being an electrical storm for the entire time of our stay, our dog never once set foot in the cabin (she was happy sleeping in the back of our utility vehicle). However when leaving, they accused us of having our dog inside and made it very clear they weren't happy about having the dog there!
The shower block is small and old and you need to purchase tokens for the shower ($1 token for 6mins hot water).
Overall, it is just a very old-fashioned NZ campsite with facilities that probably haven't been improved in a few decades. But it does have everything you need.

Had a great stay here. Both the proprieters were always very helpful and made you very welcomed. Although not state of the art, it is very comfortable and had everything I required plus the massive bonus of the beach only a hop, skip and jump away. Its like the good old kiwi holiday you use to be able to take with the family. Mokau and Awakino are only about 3 to 4 kms away and you can even walk to either along the beach if you wanted to do that.
I stayed in a kitchen cabin hich had all cooking facilities plus a microwave, tv, and fridge. You have the choice of cabins, caravans or tents. It is also very family friendly. Overall, I will definately be back.

We camped at Seaview. The facilities are old but well maintained and clean. The tent camping area is handy to the kitchen and shower block and has its own direct access to the very nice black sand beach and nestles against a bush-clad hillside.. When booking, we were told that Awakino Service Station sells milk and bread but we found that, in fact, it has a range of groceries and a friendly proprietor.. It's about 2 km from the camp. We had a great time.
