We found ourselves in Mokau Motel after a long unexpected drive from Gisborne. The owner was very accomodating, helpful, friendly and made us feel very welcome.

We stayed in a upstairs unit. It was bright, light, clean and had amazing views over the sea to the mountain and we enjoyed watching the bird ride the air streams, very relaxing.

The bed was comfortable the room had blockout curtains so we had a much welcomed nite sleep. The shower was powerful.

We both enjoyed chatting to the owners who gave us valuable local knowledge.

Would definitely recommend staying there.

The owners of this motel are very communicative and helpful. We were glad that they ran out of rooms downstairs and so we were offered an upstairs room for an extra $10. The view of the river meeting the sea was amazing. Having benches outside on the balcony to relax in was great.
It was very clean and had a well equipped kitchen. The room was spacious with a little dining and lounge area. The queen bed was comfy and it includes another single bed. They even have finer details like 2 mirrors. One for him and for her. Rare for most motels that we have stayed in.
It was a very pleasant stay especially after a rather rough journey along the wet coast. We will definitely come back and stay should we be in the area.

Stayed in an upstairs unit with an amazing view of the river mouth, but unfortunately, the weather did not allow us to see Mt Taranaki. The Unit was large, clean and well presented, with everything you need for your stay - including a toastie grill machine and a crockpot for use. The owners were very welcoming, friendly and offered ideas for meals and local attractions to see. No hesitation in staying again if in the area. Highly recommend.

My husband and I stayed here for a last minute break. Can’t speak more highly of the motel and we will definately come again. The place was warm and cosy and quiet and we throughly enjoyed our stay. We will definately be back. It was the little extras that blew us away in the unit that many main streams motels have forgotten.

These units have a pleasant outlook out over the bay with the sea in the background. The beaches aren’t far away so take your togs or walking shoes. Great bed, so-so kitchenette, and basic bathroom. All appeared clean except for some rubbish left in the pedal bin. Access could be a bit difficult for some to access the upstairs units. Pleasant stay tho.

Our group of five (adults, teenagers and children) really enjoyed our nights stay here. We loved the relaxed, friendly way the motel is run and the beautiful views overlooking the Mokau river and settlement. The units are very clean and tidy and beautifully maintained. It is also a short walk down to a part of the river/beach where swimming is possible. Even without a swim there is plenty to explore along this beach. We would love to return for a longer stay.

Absolutely loved our stay! We stayed in the family unit on the bottom story. The view was great! The room was very clean and the hosts were very lovely and accommodating. Would definitely stay again and try out the luxury suites for an even better view :)

We were heading north towards Auckland from the ferry and planned on this area for our second night. The only lodging the I-site in Picton could find was the Awakino Hotel, so we booked it. We passed the Mokau Motel before arriving in Awakino and noted that it looked really nice. When we got to the hotel, they had no record of our reservation and we decided to check out the room before checking in. Very basic, a couple of beds and a bathroom, not even a TV or tea pot, so we decided to head back the few kilometers to the Mokau Motel and we were so glad we did. For $30 more than the hotel, the motel's standard room offered a kitchen, flat-screen TV, and nice furnishings. We took room 7, a premium room on the top floor. This unit had a king bed, table and chairs, and a couch in the main room and 2 twins in a separate bedroom. There was a spacious, well equipped kitchen with 2 burners, an electric fry pan, microwave, and mini fridge. The view of Mt.Taranaki, the river, and sea were lovely and the breezes cooled the room. There are two takeaway restaurants (and a butcher shop) at the foot of the hill, one sold us raw eggs for breakfast in the room and the other served up some good pan-fried snapper and gurnard for dinner. The black sand beach is about a 5 minute drive or 10-15 minute walk. The hosts were gracious and helpful. Jack the dog was a great ambassador. We could only spend one night, but wished we could have stayed longer to check out the area more.

I only stayed for the one night on my way from Wellington to Waitomo. As New Plymouth seemed to be completely booked out for some reason I continued traveling until I came across this little spot. Unfortunately rather late in the day for most things to be open or available.
The caretakers were extremely helpful, very chatty despite the odd hour and gave me some excellent advice on the route to take for the next stage of my trip.
For that alone it was worth the stop here.
I took the luxury unit with the spa - heaps of room, good facilities and a very comfy bed. I did not use the spa due to the late hour but it was tempting. Loved the duck in the spa !
There are lovely views over the water and tours are available in the area which also seems to be very good for fishing.

After a long trip, and a lost wallet Mokau motel took me in trusting that I would deposit $ via internet banking as I had no cards etc, I thought this was really trusting and so kind. Then on top of that I was asked if I had eaten, which I hadn't as I had no $ to buy any, next minute there was a knock on my room door, the owner had cooked me tea, fresh fish caught that day and an ice cream sunday!! Thank you Mokau motel for your kindness and making an awful trip into a lovely comfortable night. I will be back.
