Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Old Hotel but rooms have been modernised fairly recently and are very good. All clean ,very. O for table beds and fantastic pressure for water in shower. All accomodation on first floor, o elevator so you must carry bags up a.couple short flights of stairs, but overall very good

Room fridge a bit noisy overnight. Computer noise in dining area intrusive. Lovely helpful staff, great selection for breakfast. Happy with our stay overall. Would stay there again if we were in the area..........

Beautifully renovated hotel. Very cheap but certainly doesn't look like it. Only a short drive from New Plymouth and set in a classic country hotel. We were checking out before breakfast was available so the receptionist delivered a continental breakfast to our room. I would definitely come back again.

Nice to see a refresh of a old school pub/hotel in small town NZ. Room was fine with a few little hiccups, but the service was great as they tried to fix any concerns without a fuss. On-street parking only. Rooms were clean, beds were on the softer side but ok. Close to the river - perfect for fish and chips for dinner.

The Masonic Hotel is lovely. My first impression was that it's been tastefully refurbished with modern facilities and lovely decor. It's fresh and clean. The beds are comfy. The staff are friendly and welcoming. The continental breakfast, while not flash, was adequate.

Unfortunately, and this is NOT the hotel's fault at all, it was a VERY long night with not much sleep. Our room overlooked the street, and throughout the night we were treated to drunken teens doing all the noisy things drunken teens do. There's no off-street parking so our car was parked in the open. To add to the fact I was constantly woken up by the rowdy behaviour on the street, I was worried about the car and my partner's band gear that was in it.

Unable to dine at hotel as resturant not open. Reception rang a couple of places so we could have dinner and had a lovely meal at RSA.
Didn't feel safe walking at night.
Basic reception service. A lot of waiting around.

Booked 3 rooms deluxe king deluxe triple deluxe double booked for 7 people for 2 nights $1,060 plus extra 3 children $300 - Waitara when they get rid of the creeks in the stairway when you can't hear the neighbours shower when you have the option to recycling when they replenish your toilet complimentries! ask yourself does the price match a 5 star hotel.

Thank you for your review. As discussed in private with you and other members of your party when it was discovered there were additional guests staying on your reservation a discounted tariff was offered for the children. As I explained to you, having unaccounted guests that I was unaware were staying would have put me in a terrible position had something happened. As Hotel Manager there are many responsibilities to ensuring guests comfort and safety and the safety of the facility and I take these responsibilities seriously. When the additional tariff was paid I was profusely apologised to. It was also acknowledged that the email I sent prior to your check in confirming the accommodation for the number of people booked had not been read correctly. Had the number of guests staying under your reservation been amended this situation would have been avoided. At no time was I made aware that you had been less than happy with the facility or had been at all inconvenienced. As explained to all our guests on check in our building dates back to the 1880's. Generally our guests are enchanted with the gracefulness of the building and how sympathetically the refurbishment has retained the character and charm of the old building, particularly what was the buildings original stairwell featuring the plaster ceiling. Guests are also made aware that there may be some creaking on foot fall in this stairwell but it is safe and sound, just a symptom of it's age. Perhaps too you may have missed the environmental tent card displayed in your bathroom for guests in regards to recycling, linen water and energy conservation and that all our guest amenities are bio degradable, free from animal or petrochemical by-products, Made from a 100% vegetable base, GE Free, tested on humans, not animals, Printed on 100% recycled, oxygen bleached cardboard. At times of high occupancy due to the extremely high water pressure in our showers this can be heard by other guests. As with our comfortable beds guests have expressed they wish they could take our showers home with them. I wish you had discussed your concerns with me at the time. Should you stay again in the future you will be warmly welcomed and every effort will be made to ensure your comfort of stay. Kind regards Denise Hotel Manager

I wouldn't stay anywhere else in the Taranaki area. The Hostess is ever-reliable, thoughtful, and communicative, and super-efficient. Early-week dining options are few in Waitara, but 10-15 mins drive will provide many good restaurants etc. Thurs-sunday offers at least two top-quality options within 2 mins walk.

Needed a clean & quiet place to stay for three nights while I was working day's locally. Found the Masonic Hotel perfect for all I required.
Lovely clean & recently refurbished interior & a brilliant shower.
Waitara may not be a tourist hub but this hotel has some good old kiwi friendliness & decorum right down to fresh feijoa's with breakfast. Yum!
