Sen is a wonderful little getaway on Shodoshima - we enjoyed our stay there, felt welcome and at home. The views of the sunset from the balcony and beach are spectacular. Matthew and Nori are lovely - highly recommend staying here if you get the opportunity.

Nori and her husband run Sen Guesthouse in 2018, they moved their guesthouse to Shodoshima in search of nature. Through her own experience on a pilgrimage, she was drawn to the“hospitality culture”. Moved by the hospitality of the locals, she decided that she wanted to return the favor. She and her husband created a map of the Shodoshima pilgrimage route in Japanese and English to introduce foreigners. The map has been so well received that many inquiries from overseas have been mailed overseas. She continues to promote the charms of the Shodoshima pilgrimage, which is rich in nature. “Walking along the mountain paths, you can see the view of the sea, which is unique to the island, and sometimes find that someone has cut down the branches and trees that stick out on the path for the next walker. It is a wonderful culture that people's thoughtfulness like that remains. I would like to see the administration take the lead in addressing environmental issues on the island. We ourselves would like to volunteer to help maintain the mountain paths around the guesthouse. When I see the guests gazing out at the sea in a relaxed mood, it is our role to preserve this landscape. Inheriting the culture of the Shodoshima pilgrimage and the nature that surrounds it is not only about providing hospitality to pilgrims and tourists, but also about passing on the rich island lifestyle she enjoys by the quiet sea, far from the villages.

If you're willing to go the extra mile to stay at Sen Guesthouse, you'll be rewarded tremendously. The location is amazing, you're welcomed by the spectacular sunrise or sunset everyday from its balcony. Imagine having a transcendental moment of following a magical path that sun shone on Seto Inland Sea and reading the book of Nature transforming theatrically from page to page. One literally felt blessed to be in full witness of such tranquility. The guesthouse is decorated with a cheerful artistic touch, and what's more surprise is that there's a real tree emerging from the center of its kitchen table. That tree, somehow erases the border between people and brings everyone a bit closer. This is the place where strangers become friends, and share food, thoughts and discoveries of the day. One will be amazed by the interesting people this guesthouse attracts, and a great delight to hear about their stranger than fiction stories. The bed is comfy and the bathrooms and shower rooms are meticulously kept and clean. One could feel the thoughtfulness of the hosts to provide a cozy place for their guests. It truly feels like a home away from home. The hosts, Noriko and Matthew, are sincere and friendly, and they are always attentive to their guests' needs and willing to help out anytime. Also, not to mention their cute, doll-like, two-years-old daughter, who simply bubbles up this loving place with her gifted interactions with the guests(we are her big toys I guess ^皿^) and great fun to watch how she expresses herself with her barely intelligible baby talk(only Mom and Dad could comprehend ><") I wished I could have stayed longer, with at least a minimum of three days, two days to explore the island and a day to relax at the guesthouse, watching the sunrise and sunset at the balcony, or taking a hammocks nap at its secret beach. ^0^

We stayed 4 nights at this relaxed guesthouse. The location is well situated, beautiful and green. Noriko and Matthew are very friendly, relaxed and helpful owners. We had a home away from home experience. Rooms have different styles and a Japanese feel to them. Interaction with owners and other guests proved to be fun. We rented a car nearby which helped us a lot getting around the island efficiently for the Setouchi art festival. Parking space was available at Sen’s. There are not many restaurants around, supermarkets there are (not in walking distance). Fortunately the kitchen was well equipped to prepare a ‘home cooked meal’. If you are a light sleeper eye mask and earplugs might be needed. Would love to come back again!

This place is something that is not easy to find. a backpacker jewel with a Very personal touch, it is run entirely by the owners, a Japanese – American couple who are able to create an amazing empathic relation to their guests. You really do feel at home with friends, at the same time, the place itself is managed ultra professionally. Beyond that, Matt is an excellent entertainer with a vast knowledge of the location and japanese pilgrim culture.
One of my favorite backpacker places on the planet

Sen Guesthouse is a super sweet spot with incredibly gracious hosts. Nori and Matt are warm, friendly, generous and knowledgeable. The house is super comfortable and clean, and has an incredible view from the front porch and its own private beach. The perfect spot to call HOME while exploring Shodoshima. Note: be sure to eat at “Eat” while on the island. SO YUM and fun vibe.
