This hotel is an amazing experience and we loved it. Hotel Urashima is built on a peninsula in the harbour. You can take a boat to the front door or park abotu 5 minutes away and take the bus. The bus comes regularly and drives though a tunnel to the lobby entrance. There are five main buildings for the hotel, all connected by tunnels and walkways. The highest building is Sanjokan which can be reached by elevator or escalator, very long escalator. It has great rooms and is the higher end building. We stayed one night in Sanjokan and enjoyed an amazing view from the room and a beautiful dinner and breakfast.
We stayed another night in Nagisa, which is the harbour front building. Very nice room, but be sure to request non-smoking as we discovered one floor smells of smoke so strongly it will knock you down. Dinner and breakfast was also nice. Nagisa had a nice game area for the children.
The other two buildings seem OK. Honkan is probably the oldest.
Best part of this hotel are the cave onsens. Super great experience. Onsens built into the cave overlooking the ocean.
Staff were all super great.
Highly recommend staying in Hotel Urashima. It is worth visiting the area to enjoy the hotel and cave onsens.
There is a convenience store in the hotel that has pretty much anything you need.

Hotel Urashima is a sprawling resort onsen located on an island right off the coast of Katsura and near the famous Nachi shrine. It offers 4 different giant spa rooms, as well as hosts their own Lawson convenience store and buffet and izakayas dinning options.

The rooms are open and comfy and while the hotel itself has a quant, slightly aged charm from another era, the amenities and attention to detail and quality are incredible. You can even take a walk to an amazing ocean view / shrine if you are feeling done with the spas.

The spas themselves are incredible - located in various ocean caves. You can see the ocean as you take a soak and relax.

I can't recommend this hotel enough for their customer service and overall passion for providing the best experience possible.

Oh yeah and you ride a giant turtle boat to the island, what more can you ask for - seriously! Lol

The hotel is well known for its unique cave onsen besides the sea. This is definitely a very special experience for visitors. The hotel is with free shuttle bus/ferry to the hotel depending on the time of arrival. My family stayed at the nisshokan which is with beautiful sea view. The room is very comfortable.
The only bad thing of the hotel is the dinning, limited choice and not delicious at all for the dinner and breakfast buffet.

While we can appreciate the nostalgic appeal, the hey day of this property is long gone.
It it has an amazing location and looks like something from a Bond film however that is where the appeal ends.
Unfortunately the buildings and facilities are dilapidated and in a serious state of disrepair.
A very unfortunate odour hits you when you enter the foyer and only gets worse the further into the building you get.
The swimming pool is a broken down ruin taking center stage in front of the dining room and ocean facing rooms.
The buffet was the worst we have ever experienced.
While clearly well prepared, every dish was cold whether intended or not.
I would not recommend this property, even for the nostalgic appeal.

Stay here for 1 night and very disappointed.

The hotel is too big and too old. Not the place for travelers who expecting for the relaxing and peaceful moment.

We had dinner and breakfast which also very disappointed. Quality and taste were below Japanese standard.

Onsen cleanliness was also below standard comparing with many other onsens I had visited

By all means, very disappointed and will defenitely not going back again

Our family of 4 with kids loved this experience - Enormous resort. Few if any Gaizin. Aged tourists and few children if any during non school vacation periods. Boat from tiny port town to the hotel is running constantly with very little delay if any. The buildings are in need of work and dated, but the multiple natural hot spring baths(all real sulphur spring segregated and all nude except if you rent a private pool for family experience) with multiple views are just sensational. Room was clean and we could choose from western or Japanese style. The Tuna cutting presentation is a primitive carnal ritualistic experience worthy of the ‘Maguro’ chanted background disco beat. Musac is piped throughout the complex pervading every moment of your experience, with subtle suggestion of a mental asylum with all guests expected to wear Yukata and slippers while in the hotel common areas and restaurants. The super long ‘space’ escalator to the top of the mountain looking out over the ocean is fun for kids and your patience is rewarded with a great walk on the top of the mountain to a breathtaking overlook/lovers leap location projecting out over very typical Japanese tiny green topped volcanic islands piercing the surface of the ocean. In the evening, try the hot spring on the top bldg. looking west over the mountains for that multiple range with fog ridges fading into the distance look that is just totally Tsugoi! Please note that the male and female baths are switched regularly so that each cave or view experienced from the special baths can be enjoyed by all in every perspective. Hotel is deserted during middle of day and we did not see lunch options – note we were there in April after School Spring breaks and not during the summer season where outdoor pools and other arcade amenities are open for kids.

Easy place to hop into the port in the morning to see the “fresh” tuna auction 6:30am ish for an hour or two or to hit the Nashi waterfall and shrine area. The restaurants in Katsuura are brimming with super fresh Tuna dishes.

Location- 4 blocks from the train station is the port where you will easily see the silly whale and turtle made up ferries that take you to the hotel. Since there is another hotel here that uses the ferry, make sure you are going to the Urishima.

Food plans – there are multiple confusing food plans – I suggest 1 night for the buffet with the tuna carving show and 1 night for the little Izikaya on the ground floor(great sizzled beef)– the Izakaya is not on the meal plan, so suggest breakfast plan and deal with dinner while you are there.

Wifi available in lobby.
Suggest for family that wants to experience hot springs, relax for 2+ days and be immersed in a truly modern Japanese experience.

This hotel is huge with three wings. If you can pamper yourself by paying more, I recommend staying at the Sanjokan annex. It has its Le onsen for guests. Otherwise there are more than six onsens but most headed to the rock onsen which overlook the sea.
Sanjokan has its own reception and the service was great. The breakfast (if included) was delicious and unlike most western spread buffet.
Make sure if you are driving to key in the hotel car park phone for the car park is a distance away but there is a bus shuttle to take you to the pier and then a boat ride to the hotel ( hotel not accessible directly by car).

I’ve been at this hotel for numerous times over years. Especially after the renovation, it regained its reputation as one of the best hotels around Nachikatsuura.

The boat ride to check in the hotel is always something special about the hotel. Also so much fun to try different types of onsen and facilities.

The concept of this hotel is based on the Japanese folk tale Urashima Taroo, who got transported to the Dragon King’s palace by a turtle. To get to this hotel, you have to hop on the hotel’s free shuttle ferry for 5 minute. It is interesting but a little of a hassle coz we got stuck in the hotel for 45 minutes not aware that there were only 2 ships between 12pm and 1pm. At other time, there are 3-4 ships every hour, and at peak hours the ships run non-stop. So it’s not too bad.

This hotel is an ambitious project. It is like a small town by itself with 5 buildings of hotel rooms and 5 different hot springs including the famous Boki-do Cave which is featured in every travel brochure of Katsuura. It’s an interesting experience to bath in such natural settings. It would be even greater if there were not so many hotel guests.

As many reviewers mentioned, the hotel is a bit dated. But the rooms are clean and very spacious. We stayed in a room with sea view and enjoyed it. The hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. This is not a bad hotel. But if I ever visit this area again, I would pick a different hotel for a different experience

Pros:
• 5 different hot springs to choose from
• Spacious rooms
• Friendly staff
• Having to take a ferry to reach the hotel (this can be both a pon and a con)

Cons:
• Too many guests if you prefer somewhere quiet (this can be a pon for people who love to be around with people)
• Dated rooms

My family and I stayed here for 2 nights in May. You get there via a little turtle boat, although if you don't want to take the boat, a taxi can take you there as well from the Kii Katsuura station (fare was not bad, i think less than 1500 yen). We stayed in a Japanese-style room in the Main Building (Honkan). It was a nice, clean room, and pretty spacious. The toilet was separate from the sink and bathtub, which is always a plus for me, since I don't particularly care for the 'unit baths' that include toilet, tub & sink all in one. It is a huge hotel, with 6 onsens. I think i went into about 4 out of 6. The cave onsen is the main attraction here, and even though i went early in the morning at 6am, it was already pretty crowded. I recommend the 2 onsens in the Sanjokan building - went around 4pm when it's less crowded and they were great.

Food - nothing spectacular, as they were all (breakfast & dinner) buffet-style. But there's LOTS of choices and you wont get bored of the variety of food. First night we ate at Nisshokan (i think) - food was so-so. On the second night, we had dinner at the Sanjokan, where the food was much better.

Overall stay was nice, considering the price (we paid about 12,000 yen per person i think). I dont think i'll be coming back here anytime soon (as it's in a really remote place), but if I do, I'd like to stay at the better building, Sanjokan, where the rooms are nicer. Note: I booked my trip on Rakuten Travel, and the site did not indicate which building you're in. Had I known, would have definitely paid a little more to stay at the Sanjokan. So if you're particular about which building you're booking, then i recommend booking directly from the hotel website.

Oh, we also visited the massage kiosks - that was great and pretty inexpensive!

Wifi- only in one area of the main lobby. No wifi in rooms.

Sorry, I don't know the answer about day use but I f you go you may get want to know that our companions used the onsen in early afternoon and had it to themselves.

Hi Ms Lee, I would send this question to the hotel or your accommodation booking agent. I travelled by train to Katsuura. Once you arrive, walk to the pier, 5-10 mins walk. There is a free hotel ferry to take you to the hotel. The onsens are free for use - no extra charge. We only had the breakfast plan so I can't advise on dinner. Thanks, Mary
