Yesterday we finished our ski holiday at Sierra Resort and the location is simply stunning - you will not find a more beautiful winter wonderland setting and the resort's architecture features huge windows with spectacular views into the surroundings. The beyond helpful and efficient team at Sierra got us bookings at local restaurants including one Yakiniku (Japanese BBQ) dinner that completely blew our mind - definitely some of the best Wagyu we've tasted. The complementary dinner shuttle bus worked perfectly for us and from the stops it was only a 2/3 mins walk to the restaurants (we went out for dinner all 3 nights in a row because it was so easy to get to the village and we enjoyed having a look around town but there is also a restaurant at the resort that fellow guests said was excellent). Similarly the staff explained where and when we could hop on the bus to the slopes and get back, which worked without any problems for us (from lots of ski holidays back home in Europe, we were already well used to the ins- and outs and the logistics of skiing and the transport to and from slopes here was on par with most ski resorts we have been to)

The Onsen at Sierra are extraordinary (particularly amazing after a long day of skiing) and the breakfast choice is huge and delicious (incl. such things as homemade jams!). We live on the other side of the world, but if we were able to come back to Japan we would definitely stay here again.

We stayed 3 nights and Hotel Sierra Resort and had a lovely time. Highlights-
1) Onsen. You have to book the private onsens at 8 am, but if you miss them the communal (gender-segregated) onsen is just as amazing (and not busy like a public onsen). Surprising perk - ice cream snacks available after you come out of the onsen. Yum!
2) Food. We didn't know that we had paid for the breakfast & dinner included option, but in the end we are glad we did! The breakfast buffet included Japanese and western options. The 5 course french/japanese fusion dinner was excellent every night, but might not be good for picky eaters. The staff always asked about food sensitivities and were accommodating of our needs.
3) The room. Large, heated flooring, beautiful view into the forest.
4) Transportation. We did not have a car but the hotel is on the public hakuba snow bus line so you can get to any of the ski resorts quite easily. Pay attention to the schedule though as not every bus stops at the hotel.

The hotel is in a beautiful setting but one downside is that it is quite far (~15min) from the central Hakuba bus station and if you miss the bus or shuttle it is a 3500Y cab ride back to the hotel.

Great place.
Had a 5 night stay at Sierra last week, ski trip with my daughter, could not fault the resort, its staff and the food.
Beautiful location with a free shuttle bus to move you into Hakuba, good skis to rent and easy local transport to thye ski resorts, 10 minuets up the road.

Booked this hotel because their website shows the rooms are fine. Also they have private bath.
The real situation is that the building is rather old and the room is not well-maintained. We check-in a little bit late because we booked their transportation via email but did not show, until we asked the staff at the Hakuba station to phone the hotel to pick us up.
We check in at around 4 pm that day and all the private baths were already booked.

I usually book hotels after going through TA reviews. I tried booking Aqua Alpine Hotel which was ranked first among the Hakuba hotels but was utterly disappointed that no one replied to my email after 3 attempts. Sierra Resort was the only one that responded the same day and completely helped me with all my queries regarding ski schools, ski equipment rentals, restaurants etc.

I spent six nights here and was totally blown away by their wonderful hospitality. Special mention goes to Ms. Nagasaki who gave my family such personal service that we felt like VIPs.

We loved this place for the following reasons:
1. Warm welcome at the front desk each time I step into the lobby (upon check-in, after returning from dinner/ski etc.)
2. Two staff that spoke good English were identified to me from Day 1
3. Large spacious lobby area where complimentary coffee and drinks were served
4. Because the resort was in a fairly secluded area, complimentary shuttle service could be arranged to anywhere in Hakuba (to restaurants, supermarket, ski slopes etc.)
5. The front desk asked me everyday where I would like to go for dinner so that they can make arrangements for me (I will be dropped off and picked up)
6. On-site onsen (hot spring) that we could use anytime
7. Fantastic view of the snow-capped mountains every morning!

If you are considering a ski trip to Hakuba, I also did the following:
1. book ski lessons on-line before coming (Hakuba Snowsports School)
2. rent ski equipment (the Boarding Co.) - they would deliver the equipment to your hotel and do fitting for ski boots - totally hassle-free)

I will definitely come back again!

Stay: 6 days during the week before the Xmas week
Party: 2 adults + 2 kids (2y and 4y old)

First of all let me say that we had a good ski holiday at the Sierra Resort. I should also mention that during the first 5 days of our stay, the Hakuba area received an unprecedented 1.5 meters of snow, making life for everyone in the area challenging overall.

However there are some clear hits and misses and anyone staying at this place should know about it.

Rooms:
Our room was 407 which is a two bedroom place with (supposedly) a fire place and a private onsen/Jacuzzi on the balcony. We never used the fire place since one has to pay for the wood and arrangement, and we could not use the private onsen/Jacuzzi since it wasn't connected to any water source...
Apart from that the rooms were a bit dated overall with pretty basic and not very tasteful furniture. Cabinet space was quite limited (especially if you travel with kids and for a ski holiday). The bathroom was tight and basic but we always bathed/showered at the hotel onsen so didn't use the bathroom much. Overall the rooms are basic and at the lower end for a 4-star hotel - especially considering the price.

Facilities:
The hotel was a public, female/male separated onsen which was great and where we went every day with our kids. This is certainly a highlight of the whole hotel. They also have a private onsen which is great too, but which only included an outdoor bath. Indoor was a resting place only.
The hotel also has a resting place/bar near the lobby which is peaceful and comfortable. It faces the forest through floor-to-ceiling windows which is very pretty during winter.
Generally we had good wifi connection throughout the hotel which was a big plus for us.
The onsen and the resting area are 4-star or even 5-star worthy. The rest of the hotel is slightly dated and at best 4-star.

Food:
Part of every Japan trip has to be to sample the fantastic food that they serve there. Unfortunately this is where Sierra Resort comes up short in a few ways. First of all they only have a ‘French’ restaurant onsite. The restaurant is not really French but rather a pretty straight forward Western restaurant serving Steaks, some Fish, Fries and Gratin. The most French was probably the escargots that were being served (and which were quite ok). The food was ok but not excellent; you can get equivalent Western food in many places. Of course the meat quality is excellent (and expected for a 50 USD steak) but that is generally the case in Japan. There was however not much surprise in the choice or preparation methods for their menu, so I would not suggest to eat too often at their hotel restaurant.
In addition one can eat free miso soup, green curry and raw eggs outside the entrance to the hotel. This is a nice feature indeed but is only good for a snack since you cannot bring this food into the lobby to eat at a warm place.
Eating out from the hotel presents its own challenges. Lunches at ski area restaurants were generally pretty rough: basic food, cheap and unhealthy ingredients, poor environment. The hotel could not give us any good alternative either. We therefore chose our own lunch places in town. One particular recommendation would be Yoko’s which is a residential house in Masanori with one table only where Yoko offers her home cooked food for guests. Very solid, good food.
When eating out for dinner my prime advice would be to make your own choice and in general not rely on the hotel recommendations. The staff clearly do not know the restaurants themselves and just push their standard favourites. They have a clear preference to push a few restaurants but that is more driven by their transportation logistics to drop off and pick up everyone easily than anything else. Ask for the restaurant guide that they use in the hotel and then pick yourself.
Kikoya seems to have gathered some reputation for good sushi/sashimi and fish food – but is not as world-class as some people make it out to be. It’s good though and a place that I would recommend. Hifumi is excellent Japanese food in a very nice setting (but quite pricey). We also dined at the Japanese restaurant of the Tokyu hotel which again was very good and traditional. Lots of Japanese/local clientele there which indicates the quality of the food. Do not take up the Sierra Resort recommendation for their favourite Okonomiyaki restaurant! The food is not of good quality, the restaurant is cold and the service poor. Additionally – for us – this restaurant also posed a danger to our small kids since the seating is low floor and the hot Okonomiyaki plate takes up almost the whole table – making it the perfect place for small kids to touch and burn their hands.
Overall we had some great food during the week, but also some significant misses (ski restaurant, okonomiyaki, etc). 3 out of 5 is a fair assessment.

Skiing:
Be aware: The week before Xmas is not a skiing week in Hakuba! One major ski area, Happo-One, was not open despite record amounts of snow during the week. This was highly frustrating to us as the individual Hakuba’s ski areas are not as large as those in Europe and we could not sample different ski areas during the week.
Many ski schools were only open for private (and pricey) classes. The only ski school open during our week was in Goryu-Imori which is quite a bit away from the resort.
Overall the ski infrastructure is ok but a bit dated (3 out of 5). All ski lifts were either gondolas or 2/4 seaters but some of them did not have a safety handle to protect you from falling off the chairs. Again quite dangerous when skiing with small kids as one needs to hold them in seating position throughout the ride up the hill. The powder snow is fantastic though.

Transport:
Transportation at Sierra Resort must be the biggest gripe of any guest and the main reason why I even contemplated giving a 2-star Tripadvisor rating. Throughout our stay we were in a constant haggle with the hotel about our transportation arrangments, especially since we felt screwed during the first 2 days when we didn’t yet understand their standard ‘service offering’.
The hotel has one formal shuttle bus doing most of the transportation, supplemented by one small van that is driven by hotel staff when required. The one shuttle bus has a 30-min departure schedule which implicitly means that it can only go to nearby ski areas and possibly Hakuba Station to pick up/drop off arriving and departing guests. Anything else is more than 15 mins away and hence requires their supplemental van – which they only offer up when pressed.
The hotel did not consider that during our week the only open ski school was at Goryu-Imori and hence more than 15 mins away and the only open day-care was at Evergreen in Happo-One requiring a two-stop trip that takes even more time. We were clearly not the only guests having the issue of going to Goryu-Imori but the hotel’s only solution was either to leave us stranded or suggest a 70 USD taxi ride. This was however not explained to us either in advance or upon arrival; we were essentially left to find out ourselves. After getting fed up and making our opinion known, the hotel reluctantly arranged some alternatives through their van, but it took way too much haggling, anger and time to make this happen. With 2 impatient kids (when leaving in the morning) and 2 tired kids (when wanting to return to the resort) this service is not what I call kids friendly at all.
If you can be flexible and don’t mind to adjust to their shuttle bus schedule, then you will be fine. If you are like us, you won’t be fine. At a minimum I would expect the resort to declare this limitation on their website or make it clear upon arrival. A rating of 2 out of 5 at best.

Conclusion: Throughout the week my rating fluctuated. Upon arrival my first impression was a 3 or 4 rating, this dropped to 2 when confronted with the food and logistics issues, ending up back at a 3 once we got used to their "system". In Hakuba there doesn't seem to be a clear 5-star hotel choice so one will always have to make some compromises. I hope this review helps others to make their decision in that regard.

They have their heart in the right place and they are IN the heart of the right place! Located on a huge private estate with its own natural onsen (hot springs), this hotel deserves to be a great hotel possibly the best in the area.

The decor and furnishings are 20-25 years old and although everything is quite clean, needs a breath of fresh air. The internet pictures are certainly much brighter and more modern than the reality. Other negatives-no room service and laundry service but see below. Bathrooms also need modernisation and thirstier towels and better water pressure. Heated bedroom floors but bathroom floors not obviously heated but they were warm bathrooms. Small separate toilet. Family unit was well laid out with separate twin room and TV but one bathroom. Outdoor spa on balcony but closed for winter (boarded up). Stained lampshades, no clock, one English channel (CNN) but hey check out the funny Japanese shows and sumo wrestling! Unlike the inernet photos, no flat panel TV but CRT ones. The in house onsen was nice but no washing area and a bit run-down but constant flowing water and His/Hers sections. No room internet but free wireless in lobby and restaurant. Someone once said the more expensive the hotel the quieter it is. The Sierra rooms are generally quiet but the floors are wooden and one can hear the guests upstairs, and the corridors. The room door is glass panelled but there is a sharp corner so most of the time people can not see you in your birthday suit! No English newspapers anywhere and no in room safe. Communal fillable pump for soaps and shampoos and conditioner, no moisturisers.

THINGS LIKED: Nice polite staff who are personally interested on how you are going and how they can help. Not many speak English but about a handful and one speaks Chinese, English, Korean and Japanese! Like many Japanese hotels they seem to reserve the most petite young ladies to take your bags to the room making you feel guilty! Great gardens for playing in the foot-thick snow all around the hotel. Slippers provided everywhere but are they hygienically cleaned!? Interestingly many wore them to the dining room. I suggest they want you to regard the resort like your own home. Very effective and quiet aircon for heating but had to pay 1000Yen for firewood. The toilets in the public areas are much more up to date and handsfree than the in-room ones-so save your number two for the lobby!. Smoking is allowed in the restaurant and lobby and non-smoking areas not that effective. Esp. for a family: 2 great combined washing-machine-dryers (takes 3.25 hours to do a full load but all dried) free of charge and with detergent provided.

RESTAURANT deserves special mention. Grab a special if still available-1500 Yen per person for a five-course gourmet French dinner or full course shabu shabu dinner. The chef is truly an award winner and an expert in matching sherries with foods. The ingredients were top-notch, like special Nagano beef cheeks, roast duck with foie gras in pastry, scallops almost as chunky as tree stumps, specially bred local chicken, succulent fish with crispy skin and melt-in-your mouth flesh, genuine jamon from Spain, hand carved by the Chef himself, thick creamy soups, usually warm crusty house-baked breads, freshest salads served on fine gold-rimmed Nikko china, all unashamedly adhering to the three secrets of French cooking: butter, butter and butter! Breakfast is DIY extravaganza of local and international choices.

ACTIVITIES. There are almost a dozen ski-fields around to choose from, most within 10 minutes drive of Sierra, but do your research before you get there. Unlike Sapporo, English is not widely used on the fields-things like "there is an avalanche coming" will not be announced in English! Free hotel shuttle bus and van service to bus station and ski-fields as well as town (try the Emu Restaurant across the road from Hakuba Stn for great local food including cook your own teppanyaki for less than 1000 yen per person!! ) The bus to/from Nagano takes 70 minutes and costs 1500 yen for adults half price for kids. Much slower to go by local trains to Nagano. When you arrive at Hakuba Station, the people at the accommodation info shop can ring the resort to pick you up. For all its minor shortcomings the winter wonderland outside your window and the warmth inside forgives all.

Response from hakuba47, public relations manager at Hotel Sierra Resort Hakuba
Responded 29 Dec 2009
The points raised here were all very valid at the time (almost 2 years ago). We were aware of some of the issues, and others were of use to us in our quest to provide a better experience. I will address the negatives that have been fixed or improved in a point by point fashion: - Washlet-type toilets have been installed throughout and bathrooms painted. Tall westerners may still find shower heads to be a bit low. -Lampshades and furnishings have been upgraded as needed -New carpet in all public areas -Clocks are not in the rooms by hotel policy. The owner reckons that guests are on holiday and should forget about time. We can provide bedside clocks on request. -Wireless internet reaches half of our rooms. Please request when booking. -Door glass can be shaded on request. -All rooms have flat panel TVs -Hot spring has a shower area for guests who do not shower in their room first -New, larger wooden baths have been installed for both men and women. The scenery from the hot spring is beautiful surrounded by snow in the evening! -English newspapers available in the lobby -Jr. Suite rooms all have safes -All indoor areas: restaurant, lobby and ALL guest rooms are non-smoking (smoking has not been allowed in the restaurant for over 7 years!) -East wing interior has been entirely remodeled We appreciate the time, effort and fairness this reviewer has applied to the review. We endeavor to live up to all expectations of our guests. More improvements to come! Arigatou gozaimasu!

Last weekend we spent three nights at the Sierra Resort in Hakuba. It is located between the Iwatake and Tsugaike ski areas. The resort is set in it’s own forest and is in a secluded position. The hotel also functions as a country retreat out of ski season. The resort is 4 stars, but it was very nice, for ski standards. It is quite far away from everything, so if you wanted to go to the bars and restaurants it would involve a 15 minute taxi ride.

The receptionist spoke English OK. She was very helpful and polite. We told her we needed skis, and they were waiting for us in our locker on Saturday morning. We arrived around 9pm and after freshening up we went to the reception to find the bar. Unfortunately they had not bothered opening the bar. The hotel seemed very busy, so that was a shame as the bar has floor to ceiling windows overlooking the forest. So we sat in the lobby and had a drink, but it felt a bit weird. There was WIFI in the lobby and restaurant, but not in the rooms.

The room was quite spacious. It was fairly contemporary. It was not stylish but it had plenty of natural light. We were facing out to the court yard. I recommend asking for a room with the view out to the forest. The carpet had seen better days but it was not stained just treaded well. There was a flat screen TV, but no English speaking channels, so we didn’t use it. There was a two seater sofa and a dressing table. The bed was quite hard. We are actually contemplating buying mattress toppers to take with us from now on, as we are going away every other weekend skiing until the end of March, and I am missing the comfort of my own bed.

The bathroom vanity area was a little cramped, but there was plenty of space to put your toiletries. The showering facilities were traditional Japanese. This means that you sit on a little stool to wash. I actually quite like this, so this didn’t bother me. There was also a Jacuzzi bath, but we never used this, as we bathed in the Onsen every day. The bathroom was clean, but quite out dated in style.

The outside wooden Onsen was a nice feature. The changing area looked a bit like it had been knocked up out of some plywood and bamboo shoots. It was a very warming and relaxing experience. It was super hot in there but it was easy to cool down by simply sitting on the edge of the bath, and the cold mountain air worked very quickly.

The view was out to the forest and the tops of the mountain could be seen on clearer days. There is just the one shower area but the ladies was not busy, so I had never had to wait to use the facilities. In fact both times I had the bath to my myself for the majority of my stay. Yet the men’s Onsen was much busier, and more social. The ladies don’t really talk to each other, but the Japanese gents chatted to my husband freely the whole time.

The receptionist told us that the resort has only one restaurant, and serves French cuisine. The internet site informs that they also serve a Japanese ‘Kaisekki’ course dinner, which is apparently served in a 150 year old farmhouse, but we never saw this.

We chose the French ’Saison’ course dinner for Saturday night. The meal was elaborate, but some courses were very rich, such as the Foie Gras with apple, and the braised beef in red wine reduction. Overall we enjoyed the food.

There were shuttle buses coming about every half an hour in the morning and afternoon to and from the ski areas. There was nothing in between 10:30 and 3:30 pretty much, so if you wanted to stop skiing earlier you had to take a taxi. The first morning I found it all a bit of a hassle. But as long as you checked the shuttle times and organised yourself to be ready for then, it wasn’t too much trouble. It was all very organised and the buses were always on time.

We wanted to ski half day on Monday, have some lunch, and then go back to Tokyo. We asked for late check out, and they were very accomodating. Check out is at 10am, and they normally charge 2100 yen per hour. We wanted to keep the room until 2pm. This was fine and they only charged us for one hour. The receptionist walked us to the taxi when we left and waved us out all the way down the drive way. They were very friendly, but not imposing or over familiar.

Looking back on the weekend, the service was excellent. We had a fantastic three days. Would I go again? I think I would prefer to stay somewhere closer to the piste, and the bars and restaurants. I think that I would return to the hotel out of ski season, as then the grounds could be appreciated. With snow you can’t really stroll around the gardens. But overall a very nice ski hotel, and recommended to those in search of ski, but a peaceful location to return to, at the end of the day.

Sierra Resort was a very nice hotel and a very suitable base for our family ski holiday. We will return again for skiing for sure: we’re planning our return. It must be great for summer holidays, too. The cost was very reasonable. Many of the staff spoke very good English, but if they didn’t they’d get someone who did, and there was a German senior staff member who of course spoke excellent English.

We liked the staff a lot - very polite and helpful and eternally patient. What was so good about the hotel? The beds, the buffet breakfasts, the snacks, the onsen (this is a highlight of the hotel!), free glasses of wine while chilling in the lounge, decent size bedrooms (Junior suites have 2 proper rooms - very comfortable for 4), Japanese toilets (all those buttons to play with!), the lawn, the views, the restaurant, the restaurant recommendations, support for skiers (cheaper to get passes at the hotel than at the ski areas), recommended very good ski shop for ski hire, etc. It even has a dog hotel (i.e. kennel).

On returning from the slopes, there’s a foot bath on the porch fed by local natural hot springs that also feed the wonderful onsen. After summer hikes this must be a real plus. Still on the porch after a hard day on the ski slopes the hotel provides snacks such as green curry and rice or fresh eggs (so fresh) and rice, and miso soup, etc.

While our kids played on the snow covered lawn, upon returning from the slopes, making snow men or snow ball munitions Calvin would be proud of, or tobogganing, or generally larking about, Mrs & I would chill in the lounge to admire the view and sip on the odd glass and snack (more snacks!) on pop corn (!) Nice way to start the evening.

The staff gave some great recommendations for dinner in Hakuba. The hotel dining was quite expensive but very good. They even stock beers from local micro breweries, which is always a plus.

We chose Hakuba, and this hotel, to get a more Japanese experience compared to even locally run hotels in Niseko (and besides, Hakuba is on the main island): visiting an onsen is a very Japanese experience, and we all loved it. There are separate male/female baths, indoor and outdoor, and the hot soak really helps with the aches and pains of a hard day’s skiing. And Hakuba has 13 ski areas all covered by 1 pass (but you can’t ski more than 1 in a day, except for a couple that are linked, and besides they’re all a bit of a drive from one another).

We would give it 5/5 but for the following: the hotel needs a proper drying room for wet ski gear other than boots and skis - such as gloves, etc, to ensure kit dries out each night; log fire in room a pointless waste of space; hot tub on bedroom balcony never connected up - plumbing not finished; no drawer space for clothes whatsoever (sic); decor style is dated though almost all fittings are new, and some parts were a bit ramshackle.

But we will return and that is a family choice.
