We didn’t stay here BUT. We stayed in a nearby self-catering lodge and my wife unfortunately suffered a head injury which meant she struggled with the bathroom facilities at our location. We explained this to the lodge staff who couldn’t have be more helpful and supplied us the use of a room with a disabled bathroom. They absolutely refused to accept any payment for our use of the facilities and couldn’t have made us more welcome in our time of need. Truly outstanding customer service!

A very enjoyable 3 night stop in The Alpine Lodge at St Arnaud. We stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment which was a lovely size, comfortable beds and a well stocked kitchen (utensils/pans etc).
The restaurant was superb! The food was delicious, nutritious and beautifully presented, great breakfasts and dinners (I’m assuming the lunch offerings were equally good!). Great just to stop in for a coffee and muffin too.
The staff were wonderful, really friendly and helpful.
Handily located, walk out the back gate straight onto a walking track that links to the lake and other walking paths.
We’ll be recommending St Arnaud and The Alpine Lodge to friends and family.

We decided to stop at the last minute. The only room available was a two-bedroom that was on the 'dear side'. The unit was a surprise when we opened the door to a rustic smell & extremely cold especially in the bedroom. There is heating in the lounge thankfully. There was an electric blanket on the bed that took forever to get a bit of warmth. We decided to have a drink in the restaurant which was relaxing. Then book in for dinner. It was most enjoyable sitting with a very pretty view. I had the lamb shank & was not disappointed, it was delicious. I would like to especially thank Pilar our waitress who went out of her way to make sure I got a red wine that I liked.

Thank you for your review, we are pleased that you enjoyed your experience in our restaurant. Our apartments have underfloor heating which we switch on from May until the end of the winter. We are sorry that you found the room cold on arrival but are pleased that you found the heater. For pre-booked rooms on cooler days we do turn the heating on prior to arrival. We would like to wish you all the best and hope to see you again. Warm regards Alexandra

Totally disappointed with our stay, first impressions rude receptionist and wearing mask under her chin, turn around, every other staff member was either unmasked or had it sitting under their chin. So disappointing and made us feel super uncomfortable. Room was extremely run down, for $240 a night definitely the most over priced we've ever stayed in and we travel a lot for work. Room absolutely stank, possibly hadn't been used in a while? Sign saying extra charge of $25 if dishes not washed and to a satisfactory standard, hang on is this not a hotel? At $240 a night why are travellers expected to wash dry and put away their dishes? Empty soap container, and a shampoo container was all the amenities in an old bathroom with a very mouldy falling apart shower. Too dirty to let our toddler sit on floor in it. Lounge suite old, broken, and super smelly. Carpet smelled. Food extremely over priced, $12.50 for a kids meal of just 4 chicken nuggets and a handful of fries. $22 for a burger with cabbage & pork. $25 for a bland pizza with no seasoning whatsoever & bought base.
Waited at bar for ages trying to get service to order, when we had a table booked. Manager rude, when I stopped someone & asked if I could please order was told *yes that's obviously why I'm here* ... sheesh .
Once again no one wearing masks except the younger wait staff, managers all had them under their chin or not on at all. Not setting a great example!
Did love the playground right by restaurant, great for entertaining kids while you eat. But that was the end of the positives unfortunately.
Wouldn't stay again, such a let down for what was meant to be a family weekend away for the kids .

Lovely check-in experience, couldn't have been nicer. Unfortunately, we struck a patch of unseasonal weather so the Lodge became a haven - a snug retreat from the elements which saw the lake looking like a rough stretch of ocean! Our family room was plenty big enough for 3 adults and we even trotted down the path to the spa pool for a hot soak. Having a wood fire in the dining room made it feel welcoming, as did the friendly wait staff. The food was okay, not terrible but not outstanding either. If you're on a budget, lunch can be had across the road at the general store (good pies!) and there's a dinner alternative at the tavern ( we didn't try it).

I decided I would have a stop over at the nelson lakes
this place looks good on photos no so fantastic in person it wasn't worth the 150 I paid for the night which was the worst night's sleep I have had.
just the little things that could have been cleaned didn't get it . e.g defrost the fridge, clean the Seal of the fridge, and why cut the electric blanket cord , plastic kettle. the lady that checked me in was nice but that's were it ended.

It seems that this lodge aims manily at the backpacker market, which I am sure it serves very well. However the more expensive rooms perhaps do not quite reach the expected standard. Decor is dated, and a matress on a wooden base is not the most comfortable bed. Having said this, it served its purpose for a one night stay in the area, it was clean, and staff were excellent. Food was hearty, with perhaps the biggest cooked breakfast I have ever seen, and very enjoyable. I would have loved this place a few decades ago - I am not sure wheher I am now too middle aged or too middle class - or both!

We booked a studio room for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our room was clean, quiet, comfortable, and good size. The bathroom was average size with a nice jetted tub and an excellent shower. The shower was fully enclosed with a great shower head that was very adjustable and great for taller people. The bed was comfortable and we slept well. Our room overlooked a wetlands area and there is a gate with access to the trail to the park that parallels a stream. The access to the park trails is easy and the trail to the park is secluded; be sure to ask if you can’t find it! It’s in the back of the car park.
The only small drawback to the Alpine Lodge is that there is no kitchenette in the rooms. They provide a refrigerator and a hot pot. However, the restaurant is really good and we ate both of our dinners there. We asked for bowls for our morning cereal and they were happily provided.

Alpine Lodge is located almost in the middle of nowhere and was a great surprise, friendly staff and pleasant large log cabin feel suited the environment. It was handily situated near a large general store which also sold alcohol.
We were there for the annual Classic Boat Show and on the Saturday the hotel managed to feed 180 people with an excellent buffet menu.
There was a walk along a stream fringed with bush to Lake Rotoiti with some of the best bird song I have heard in New Zealand for years.

We booked a room here when we could not get to our hotel in Nelson (long story). We were very happy with the accommodations. We were just two, but our room had a full-sized bed and a twin on one level, and there was a loft with 3 twins. Accommodations were very clean and comfortable, though as with many hotels these days there simply were not enough plugs to accommodate the electronics most people bring along on trips.
There is also an on-site restaurant serving dinner and breakfast, and both meals were wonderful.

Wifi is available, and was free of charge when we visited. Due to the recent earthquake it was a bit unreliable, but not the fault of the hotel
Nelson isite is an information centre which will give you all the info you need. Nelson is creating a 5-10 day track as we speak in the upper South Island region not far from St Arnaud.
