Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed just the one night. The units are of the log cabin type and are very comfortable. They are fully equipped with everything one would need. Very clean and comfortable. Extremely quiet. no street noise at all so a good sleep. There is an easy 10 minutes or so walk from the back of the complex through to the lake. This is a beautiful walk beside a stream. Well worth walking to the lake rather than driving. The hotel is very close by and an easy walk for an evening meal if that is what is wanted. All told an great stay.

The motel is kept tidy and clean. The rooms are very comfortable with all amenities of good quality. Wi-fi is limited but enough for standard use. There is a full laundry onsite (coin-operated). The location is perfect for the walks around St Arnaud. The owners' suggestions for walks were perfect. It's great to stay with locals that are invested in their community.

Arrived one cold wet evening in June. Room had been left unlocked for us as reception was unmanned at the time. We were delighted to find the heater going and the electric blanket on. Such a lovely thought. Log cabin was cosy and had everything you wanted. Close proximity to the lake. Walking distance to restaurants and pub ( when open!). All areas beautifully clean. Free wifi.

We were well catered for from booking, arriving and for the two nights we stayed. We had a 2 bedroom chalet which was warm, comfortable and very clean. Wonderful lake just a few meters away this picturesque village was a great stop over. Just noticed this never got posted from my visit in November 2017!! Oh well - here it is x

Nelson Lakes Motels is owned by the same people who have the Travers-Sabine Lodge.
Go for one of four 'contemporary studio' units and you will find very well-specc'd accomodation - warm, spacious, comfortable, quiet and extremely good value at $125/night. Wake up to awesome native bird song and the sweet mountain air!
To get the best out of this place...
Take dinner and breakfast makings. The kitchen is well set up with everything you need for meal preparation. We packed a frozen casserole from home, a good loaf of bread, and eggs, fresh milk and fruit. There is a restaurant at the other lodge down the road but we haven't tried it.
Be prepared to do you own dishes! It helps keep the cost down.
Take a flashlight or a torch, especially if arriving after dark - there are no lights on the grounds apart from the office and the car park/driveway is a bit of a rabbit warren if you're not used to it.
The wall heater in the unit has a timer switch underneath it. If this is not on you can turn the heater up as high as you like and nothing will come out.
Check the window above the bed before retiring for the night, otherwise it might be a bit chilly!
If arriving late-ish, phone the owners and let them know. They'll process a credit card booking over the phone, open up your room, turn on the lights and heater and you can walk straight in without faffing about with check in/check out.

If you want value for money and a clean cabin then stay here.
We rented the Ella cottage which suited us for a couple of nights.
Simple and basic, clean no frills but equipped with most all necessities.

We stayed two nights in a contemporary studio unit for $135/night.
The room was large and comfortably furnished. The kitchenette was useable, well equipped but cramped with little bench space. The bed was very comfortable. The room was clean and well maintained.
We had no need to ask very any assistance and so the only contact we had with management was when we checked in and paid for our stay. We were asked to pay at check in.
The contemporary studio units were located at the rear of the premises and are very quiet. They front onto car parking but the view out the back was lovely.
In all comfortable and reasonably priced accommodation.

Arrived around 6.30pm and got the last accomodation in an unrenovated family room. Very pleasant lady on reception who apologised for having to charge the family rate . The cottage was very dated although had full facilities. In the morning went to the office to request milk for our coffee a very unhelpful man told us after finding out we were in the cottage we weren't entitled to milk as we were in a family cottage and there was a shop down the road . A little later heard him talking very abruptly to another guest who'd checked inlate . Perhaps time he found another job . Such a shame that one unpleasant unhelpful experience ruins the good work that his offsider had done the previous evening . Time for him to retire or get a job where he is not representing our beautiful country in the midst of a beautiful tourist spot

Whilst our stay was ok a couple of things put us off. You're expected to clean your own dishes. No big deal.....but no accommodation should expect this.....our dishes weren't clean on arrival but fortunately we had our own so used them.
On leaving the owner saw me carry my bike out of the unit. (Carried from the tarp I'd put it on) fair enough he wasn't happy but each time walked past and gave me another serve. Then when my wife paid he gave her a going over too. The room was left spotless. My wife is currently world #1 for a travel company and suggested he needed to communicate better with clients. My wife until recently worked in a hotel and set-up systems for mountain bike visitors and now that hotel is renowned for it. Oh yeah, and two other rooms have bikes in so I'm guessing his morning didn't improve. Most expensive for the level of quality that I stayed all week on my travels.
