Detailed Reviews
Visited on Friday evening with my partner for supper for the first time in months (having not been able to go out for obvious reasons). Wondering what new social distancing regulations would be in place, I had a quick look at their website before going. The information given was full, easy to understand and helped to prepare us for our visit. They have really gone to a lot of trouble to make people feel safe - a warm welcome, plenty of hand sanitiser, disposable menus, with everything feeling clean and fresh. I wondered if the place would feel and look very different - it doesn't. Tables are separated by unobtrusive glass screens which actually give a sense of privacy, rather than separation. Other than that, the place feels exactly the same - relaxed, friendly and fun. The food was better than ever and their chef prepared two delicious meals. I would highly recommend it and, of course, they are still very doggy friendly.

We had an absolutely fantastic New Years Eve at the Kings Arms. We were staying as a large, multi family group, us for just one night, other families for a couple of days. I cannot say enough good things about this place.
Service & Ambience
It's a lovely property but what really makes it special are the people. The owners are attentive and very friendly, more like staying with good friends. All of the staff are first class, they make you feel so welcome and go out of their way to ensure you have a great time. We also chatted with a lot of the locals who welcomed us into their hostelry and made for a great experience.
Dogs
We had our two dogs with us and I can tell you they love dogs here! I think our two had an even better time than the humans. Dog treats in the bar, chopped up sausages for breakfast and some nice fields to walk in just a short stroll away.
Food
We had a big dinner on New Years Eve and it was outstanding. I had grilled venison heart, which was an adventurous choice but paid off in spades, it was simply astonishingly good. Everyone's food was tasty and as ever the service was brilliant. As well as the dinner we had a cooked breakfast and also shared some of their ciabatta sandwiches for a lunch - all of it was excellent.
Accommodation
Our party was big enough to take up nearly all of the accommodation they had to offer. They have rooms in the main inn but also lovely little self contained cottages. We stayed in the 2 bed which was a perfect size for 2 adults, 2 teens (in the twin room) and 2 dogs. Very cosy and comfortable. Another family in the group took the bigger cottage which had 3 rooms and had room for the family and grandparents. Lovely vaulted main room where we had pre-dinner cocktails for 14 of us. Perfect places to stay if you are a family exploring the Cotswolds.
All in all this is the perfect Cotswolds country inn - cosy, friendly, great accommodation and superb food and drinks on offer. A must visit.

We stayed for 2 nights 11 to 13th June and what a find by booking agent Petspyjamas, we had never been to Cotswolds. We were travelling from Cornwall to Scotland and decided to break up our home journey. Staff are genuinely friendly and helpful, we were booked in by Toby and guided to our 2 bedroom mews in the courtyard. Very comfortable and clean, towels, bedding top class. We love our food and can vouch it was fabulous both breakfast choice and evening meals were first class. Mark and Paula are great hosts, very friendly even when very busy. What made it was their love and attention to our flattie Kaci, cuddles, hugs and a sausage at breakfast. We enjoyed some great walks, our stay was too short and will return next year. A very chilled break before driving home. All the team made us feel very welcome and locals we met on our walks stopped and had a chat. Beautiful part of the country and highly recommend.

The room was not at all like the photos on this site and booking.com would lead you to believe and smelt really badly of damp. The twin room is absolutely not worth £130. The staff couldn't have been nicer when i mentioned the issues and comped £30 off supper but it was dirty, tired and a lot of broken things. Lightbulbs missing, fireplace with missing glass, black mold in the shower, heaters not working, tired old sofa. We asked to be moved but they only had the one twin room. I understand that the other rooms are nicer but £130 is a lot of money for a room of this quality in this location.

Just returned from a one night stay in a twin room at The Kings Arms.
Of course the last couple of years have been tough for everybody, but essentially we felt that this visit was a terrible rip off.
We booked through a third party, and after not receiving confirmation we phoned three times to check our booking was there. Unfortunately, when we arrived it had disappeared off their system, though the staff were quick to resolve the booking issue and assigned us the room.
The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. However, when we were shown our room (a twin room named Sampson), the smell of damp was extremely strong. What’s more, it was very tired and in desperate need of renovation. The absurdly dark and depressing paint was peeling off the walls, the bathroom was grubby, the carpet was torn in many places, and there were cobwebs throughout.
Given it was the last room, and too late for us to leave, we decided to stay. However, the damp caused us to have a sleepless night. When we paid the bill (£150 for the room), we mentioned the smell of damp and were told management were aware of this issue and were not offered any compensation. (In fact, the staff member — who was very polite and friendly — said she had noticed it during room keeping and this was a good spot on our part as it would help her case telling management that there was actually an issue… Well, great. But we were the mugs who had just paid £150 to stay there…)
In hindsight we should have mentioned the issue after being shown our room, but we were tired and just wanted to chill and we are not the sort of people who like kicking up a fuss…
That said, we don’t feel that this was dealt with appropriately when we checked out. Further, a quick glance on here shows that a customer review from September 2020 also complains about the damp issue in the same room. So it is clearly not a new problem. It is not really on to have people staying in a room that is so evidently not fit for purpose.
The bathroom was also particularly miserable and grotty — so much so that besides giving the dog a quick wash, we did not use the shower facilities ourselves.
We also had dinner at the pub. Unfortunately the beer was quite flat, although we had been made aware of some issues with distribution.
Separately, the meal was fairly expensive (about £25 for a steak + extra for sauce and £17 for a chicken kiev). Despite the positive reviews here for the food we were disappointed: it tasted fairly bland, was extremely overpriced, and sauces were from sachets. Both of us had upset stomachs later that night (whether this was from the flat beer or the food — possibly the peppercorn sauce which we both had — we are not sure…).
Breakfast was ok. Service was very good — the staff in morning were lovely and friendly — and our dog was delighted to receive a breakfast sausage. But that’s about it on the positive front.
Unfortunately, as a whole, we had a terrible stay and would not come again. The previous night we stayed in a lovely boutique hotel which has rooms for the same price (£150+). There is just no comparison.
This was more like a hostel than a hotel… Can’t quite comprehend how they get away with charging so much for dark, depressing, damp rooms…

We have dined here twice now, being new to the area, but I think perhaps not again.
Last night's meal was disappointing and very overpriced, with our twice baked cheese soufflés being only just warm on one side, and otherwise stone cold. We ate them as we were both very hungry and the flavour was good, but mentioned the issue to the waitress when she cleared our plates and she did apologise.
We had initially ordered a sensibly priced venison dish off the main menu, but were persuaded to change it to a different, and much more expensive venison option off the daily specials which was very disappointing. Three little pureed vegetable-filled tortellini accompanying the meat lacked flavour, and were bland, and the bed of smashed peas on which the small portion of meat was presented were also cold, which at almost £26.00 for the dish did not impress. Our bill for two disappointing starters, two mains and a bottle of house Prosecco came to a hefty £105.60, including the 10% optional service charge, with no concession offered for our disappointing starters. It just seemed a high price for average pub food, and the lack of any concession means we will not be back. A shame.

We stayed, with all the family, in one of the self catering cottages, across the carpark from the pub. Two of our group had a room in the pub. The cottage was clean, well equipped and spacious, easily accommodating 6 adults and 2 babies, with two other adults joining for some meals. The beds were comfortable and the showers worked well. The kitchen area was a bit poky and could have been better lit, but it had, pretty much, everything that we needed. Additional glasses and cutlery were readily provided by bar staff. Staff were pleasant and helpful, the beer was good and the meals that were provided by the pub were excellent.

Came for dinner with friends, not been for a while but walking in to the pub was dirty, not greeted and no one was. On the bar so waited 5 minutes for someone to come. When the bar man/ waiter did arrive he was chewing food. Shown to our table
but not asked if we wanted any drinks ( even though we had been waiting long enough to all decide) Food was reasonably priced as we all
No food has had to go up in price so we don’t mind paying good
Money for good food so
We thought we were in for
A treat. This was not the case small portion, cold, bland, just tasteless.
The waiter never checked on us and seemed miserable, we asked to take off the service charge and he just started blank at me for a while. I wasn’t going to leave a review
But my sister went the other day and
Also had a bad time. This
Pub needs a good clean, a manager that can train the staff
Customer service and the chef needs to care more for his food.

Whoever wrote the review entitled‘Don’t stay in Bobtail Cottage’ must have been smoking something serious!!
Every time we visit the Kings Arms we find the staff wonderful .. the landlady and landlord are fantastic and consummate professionals .. and our stay is awesome!!!
This is one of the best dog friendly small hotels and gastro pubs we’ve ever visited (and I write about these things for a living!!)
We can’t recommend the Kings Arms highly enough

What can I say.... Paula, Mark & Team are welcoming, friendly and attentive. Nothing was to much trouble.
They have worked very hard to create a safe environment and keep us all comfortable as we venture out of our cosy homes in these uncertain times. Highly recommend you visit, the food is delicious, hot and served quickly. Great atmosphere, cosy and warm and the Christmas decorations are beautiful.
We will be back very soon 👍👍
